2 What is it? Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ) is proud to present the BHP Billiton Secondary School Surf Life Saving Championships (Surf League) for the Townsville Region. The SLSQ BHP Billiton Secondary School Surf League Program has been designed to introduce students to surf life saving skills and competition. The format of the league is certainly challenging and will enable students to test their abilities against themselves, the environment and students from other schools. The Secondary School Surf League will encompass activities relating to surf swimming, beach sprints and flags, board paddling and rescue disciplines. When and Where The SLSQ BHP Billiton Secondary School Surf League (Townsville) will involve a single day of competition. The day and date for competition has been set as follows: DAY: FRIDAY DATE: 17 SEPTEMBER 2014 BEACH: THE STRAND TOWNSVILLE Demonstrations Demonstrations and come and try, will also be held by appropriately qualified Surf Lifesavers in the Surf Boat and IRB fields. We encourage competitors to take the opportunity to visit these stations during the day to get a feel for another side of Surf Lifesaving. Eligibility All Secondary Schools in the Burdekin, Townsville, Hinchinbrook and surrounding regions are eligible to compete and entry is open to any student, regardless of whether they are surf lifesavers or not. All students competing in a water event must be able to swim 200m in 5 minutes or less (400m in 9 minutes or less, for 16 years & OVER category). This MUST be overseen and signed by a School Representative and each competitor s pool swim time needs to be recorded on the Nomination Form. Target age groups The Secondary School Surf League is targeted at Secondary School students between the ages of 12 and 18 years old, and competition age groups will be as per the following: - UNDER 13 (ie. 12 & 13 years) - UNDER 15 (ie. 14 & 15 years) - 16 YEARS & OVER Ages will be determined as per the student s age as at 31st December 2014: - A student aged years (inclusive) at 31st December 2014 will be in the U13 age group - A student aged years (inclusive) at 31st December 2014 will be in the U15 age group - A student aged 16 years or older at 31st December 2014 will be in the 16 & Over age group Please Note: For individual events, competitors are only permitted to compete in one (1) competition age group

The Iron Man and Iron Maiden events will NOT include a surf ski leg. The Lifesaver Relay will NOT include a Surf Ski and Surf Boat legs and MUST have one member from each category and MUST include at least one competitor from each Age Group and at least one female competitor. All team events have been limited to no more than two teams per school. Club affiliation It is recommended, but not compulsory, that schools become affiliated with a Surf Life Saving Club. Advantages of this relationship to the school would include access to club equipment, access to coaching and an on-beach facility at which to train. 5 NOMINATING YOUR TEAM All schools must register and complete their nominations via the Nomination Forms attached to this . Please Note: Nominations MUST be completed manually via the attached form Each school team is required to have a Team Manager, who will be responsible for the team and for ensuring the Nomination Forms are filled out correctly and returned by the close of nominations. Competition is open to all students, regardless of whether they are surf lifesavers or not. The only stipulation will be that all competitors involved in water events must be able to swim 200m in 5 minutes or less(400m in 9 minutes or less for 16+ Age Group), and if they are also competing in a Craft event they must also be a current member of a Surf Life Saving Club. Beach Events (Flags, Sprints, Relays) Open Nominations Wade Events & Patienting Must have confidence in water, able to float Surf Events Must be able to 200m in 5mins or less (400m in 9mins or less for 16+) Events As above and must be a current member of a Surf Lifesaving Club and hold a Surf Rescue Certificate or Certificate II: Public (Aquatic) Safety (ages 16+) No nominations will be accepted that that are NOT done on the official Nomination Forms, OR incorrectly completed (i.e. without ages, pool swim times, etc.). Late nominations may incur an extra fee. If your school is having difficulties completing the Nomination Forms, or if you are unable to understand the process, please do not hesitate to contact Jeremy Best for further assistance. 6 THE PROGRAM The order of events will be decided on the day and given to Team Managers at the Competition Briefing. It is envisaged that the entire program will be completed within a five-hour time limit, allowing for presentations to be conducted between 2pm and 2:30pm. POINTSCORE Points will be awarded per event as per the following: 1 st - 6 points 2 nd - 5 points 3 rd - 4 points 4 th - 3 points 5 th - 2 points 6 th - 1 point 1 point will be issued to every competitor thereafter the first six In the event that there are less than six competitors in an event point will be awarded as follows: 1 st - 5 points 2 nd - 4 points 3 rd - 3 points 4 th - 2 points 5 th - 1 point There must be a minimum of 2 competitors for an event to go ahead. A Champion School will be announced at the end of the event and this will simply be awarded to the school that accrues the highest number of points. Age Champions (Male and Female each age group) will also be named and determined as per each competitor s individual points tally from their INDIVIDUAL race results. COMPETITION EQUIPMENT All craft used in the SLSQ Secondary School Surf League must meet SLSA/SLSQ specifications and be supplied by the participating school or its affiliated Club. The organisers (SLSQ) will supply the following:- Buoys/flags, and equipment (not competition equipment ie. boards) IRB and qualified crew, and other water safety personnel Hose for beach relay and flag events Marshalling tent/s PA System WATER SAFETY All Schools are STRONGLY encouraged to supply a minimum of one (1) person to assist with water safety and/or judging throughout all competition. Please Note- The minimum requirement for Water Safety is a current and proficient Surf Rescue Certificate or equivalent or higher qualification (ie. Certificate II: Public (Aquatic) Safety).

7 RULES AND REGULATIONS A copy of the rules and regulations that will apply to all events conducted at the 2013 SLSQ Secondary School Surf League (Townsville) can be supplied, by the event organiser. If you are unsure of what each event actually is, or what it entails, please refer to this document. COVERING COSTS The nomination fee for the BHP Billiton SLSQ Townsville Secondary Schools Surf League has been waived due to generous sponsorship by BHP Billiton. PRIZES CHAMPION SCHOOL - Highest Point Score TROPHY AGGREGRATE CHAMPION SCHOOL - Aggregate Point Score TROPHY AGE CHAMPIONS - Male and Female TROPHY (Please Note: There are no medallions for placegetters in each event) OFFICIALS Surf Life Saving Queensland will provide the necessary officials for the conduct of events included on the program. As part of the personal development of students, SLSQ is keen to see students other than those involved in competition, becoming involved as Team Managers, Referees, Judges, Announcers, Recorders, or Water Safety. There is a nomination form attached if you have any students, Teachers or parents who wish to act as an Official/Water Safety. TEAM COLOURS/UNIFORM All Schools are strongly encouraged to have their teams dressed as uniformly as possible for all events. School bathers and/or Lycra shirts would be ideal, but not compulsory. PERSONAL PROTECTION Due to competition taking place during peak Stinger Season it is highly recommended that competitors involved in water events wear stinger suits. Standard SLSQ monitoring and risk management standards will be adhered to at all times; before, during and after the event. If presence of Marine Stingers is confirmed ALL water events will be cancelled. High Visibility Rash tops MUST also to be worn during all water events as a matter of safety. SLSQ will be supplying a limited number of the correct vest for events. If students wish to wear their own these must abide by SLSQ Policy (The colour that is permitted for use is: Fluoro Pink (PMS International colour code 806C*))

8 SHADE/SHELTER Schools are strongly encouraged to provide shelter from the elements for their team members and may choose to bring a tent of some description. This can be organised through the school or your link club. Please also remember to encourage all competitors to bring fluids with them or have the school supply fluids for them (i.e. Water). INSURANCE The event will be sanctioned as a Surf Life Saving Queensland Special Event and be covered under the Association s insurance policy.
