1 February 2014 North Curl Curl Chatter Official Newsletter of the North Curl Curl Surf Life Saving Surf Club New Year Kicks Off Hi all, I trust you all had a great Christmas/Summer break. We unfortunately missed out on getting the Chatter out before Christmas but I would just like to reflect back on our 3 Points Challenge which was held on Saturday, 7th December. Thank you one and all for your wonderful efforts in helping us to carry off another successful and professionally conducted event. Louis you are a marvel. Thanks. Stuart Wye Club President Just on the 3 Points, may I extend a huge thanks to Vivid Property Services and to all our sponsors who got behind the event once again help to make it the success that it is. Another significant and important event prior to Christmas and albeit a bit rushed, it was really great to officially welcome aboard North Curl Curl s latest group of Lifesavers at our Sunday social on the 24th of November. Seventeen members were acknowledged as the future of the Club in the attaining of their Surf Rescue Certificates and the capacity to join our patrolling ranks. I trust all these members will have a long and enjoyable association with Surf Life Saving and more specifically our Club. Congratulations are also extended to the 20+ members who obtained their Bronze Medallions recently. Well done and once again a big thank you to all our Trainers. It was been a pretty disappointing start to the New Year with receipt of the news that the Club was unsuccessful with our application to receive NSW Surf Clubs Facility Grant to enable us to commence construction of our long awaited improved Members facilities areas as well as the IRB/ATV storage facility. We have not as yet received any details as to why we were not selected as a recipient for any grant monies, however this setback is just that, a setback and not the end of the matter. I have received advice that the grants will be available again next season and confirm your Board is committed to providing these long overdue facilities. Well we are well over halfway through our patrolling season and it is pleasing that we have at last been having significantly improved weather and surf conditions for the local community and holiday makers to enjoy. The big question is however when will the lagoon run out. It s got to be close to a record on how much water is backed up. Thank you to all our patrolling members for your efforts to date. Keep up the good work. Friday January 10 saw the return of the North Curly Classic Golf Tournament. As expected, it was a great day with the only downside being the low number of players. We could have accommodated another fifty players. Thank you to those who did get behind this fund raising event. Your support was tremendous. Once again, many thanks to Chris Stoneman for all his efforts in organising and running the event. For all our competitors this month has seen the start of the major carnivals and all that training over the past few months will hopefully be rewarded with success in your endeavours. Good luck to all. Represent your Club with pride. Have a great Stuart Wye Club President Proudly supported by Inside this issue: Burleigh Heads Return Visit 2 Club Golf Day Fun 2 The Wiz Report 3 Mother Nature Tests 3 Points Challenge Tackling Club Sponsorship 4 6 Big Wave Sunday 6
2 Page 2 Burleigh Heads Revisit Club With this year s Manly and Freshwater Australia Day carnivals falling on the same long weekend, many clubs from as far away as Western Australia, Tasmania and Queensland took the opportunity to come to town for some hotly contested competition. And Burleigh Heads Mowbray Park was one of those clubs. Having ventured down a couple of years ago with a young development squad, this year the team was brought down by Nutri-Grain ironman Wes Berg, who is coaching at the Burleigh Heads club. The team were hosted at the club, and were happy to be back in the familiar surrounds of North Curly. Wes took some time out to admire the club s memorabilia board, and was quick to spot his own name on the wall, having competed for North Curly back in 2000/01 when he won a State Gold medal in the Open Men's Board Rescue with Greg Miller. The club hopes to build on a closer relationship with Burleigh, and hope to arrange some development camps up north in the near future. Wes Berg and the Burleigh Heads Development Squad North Curl Curl SLSC are accredited. Club Golf Day Fun Our Annual Golf Day held in early January was a fantastic event, commencing with the Golf Game at Bayview Golf Club. The Club turned on a tremendous breakfast, before some 68 players teed off mostly on time and mostly off the highest allowable handicap!!! The quality of the golf and the scores did not in most cases reflect the handicaps submitted by the players. In fact it could be said that players used handicaps that did not reflect their golfing prowess. With that said the Ambrose format was great and we managed to get around in record time of just over 4 hours. Fine Master Jim the Whip Gagen, handing out cruel but true judgment and substantial fines to our serial offenders on the day. We raised a bomb on these, thank you Jim. The next and perhaps the most exciting event was the Curly Races. Rob Watson did a fantastic great job managing the auction and the race call. Again these little wooden horses raised again over $1,000 for the club. I would like to thank our sponsors Built, Vivid Property Services, Coastview Real Estate, Jono Wye Garden Maintenance. We also received 2 kind donations of $500 each on the day from members. Some of the Supporters of NCCSLSC Winners on the day were the Geoff Pickering s Group, of Geoff, Ian Sheppard, Adam Weight and Spud Leonard. They carded an almost unbelievable score bearing in mind they were all off the maximum handicap. This was also true for the Groups coming second and third. The longest Drive was one with a 300 metre plus monster from Chris Nero who must be a terrible putter to command a handicap of 24. Nearest to the pin was me (Ham) with a fantastic wedge on the 8th to 16 centimeters. No 24 Handicap here!!!! Back at the Club the food was excellent and thank you to Connor and Jake for selling the raffle tickets they did a fantastic job. The Fines were run by the new up and coming Thank you for the workers on the day, Stuart & Jono Wye, Robert Watson, Jamie Duff, Noel Langthorne without our help we would have no chance in running the day. Next year will be bigger and better but we need members support. So please put your had up when we are looking for players sponsors. This year we raised in excess of $5,000 but with a full field we would have had a profit of $15,000 as most of the costs are fixed. If anyone has any suggestions for the day or would like to volunteer to help, just pop me an on chrisstoneman2@gmail.com. Chris Stoneman
3 Page 3 The Wiz Report Patrol Update North Curl Curl SLSC commenced the 2014 calendar year with 124 patrolling members (80 males and 44 females) comprising 100 Bronze Medallion holders and 24 SRC personnel. Over the next few weeks these numbers should be significantly boosted with recently accreddited Bronze Medallion and Surf Rescue Certificate candidates joining our club s patrol ranks. Patrolling Bronze Medallion members are now fairly evenly spread throughout our club s twelve patrol teams, so it is my intention to top up most patrol teams with either one or two new Bronze Medallion recruits. Whilst total Bronze Medallion patrol numbers are currently lower than in previous seasons, the commitment of those involved has definitely improved - i.e. quality not quantity. Recognition For Long Serving Patrol Members Ten of our club s current patrol members have completed ten years consecutive patrol service or more for our club and at least four more will reach ten years consecutive patrol service at the end of this season. I would like to see patrol members who complete ten years consecutive patrol service and who then continue to do rostered patrols for our club on a 100% patrol efficient basis being recognized with free club membership for the duration of this extended service. Honorary Beach Inspector Talk Only five club (patrol) members attended the Honorary Beach Inspector talk delivered in December by Clinton Rose (from Warringah Council) and this was certainly the smallest attendance ever for this annual talk. However, on a positive note, North Curl Curl SLSC does have more HBIs than any other Warringah surf club (with 60 in total) and there are considerably less potential candidates from which to call than have been available in previous seasons. Awards Update During the first half of the 2013/2014 season, our club has had successful candidates in gaining Basic Beach Management Certificate, Honorary Beach Inspector, IRB Driver, IRB Crew, Advanced Resuscitation Techniques Certificate, Spinal Management Certificate and Senior First Aid Certificate awards. Overall, the total numbers of successful candidates (particularly for the one day HBI, ARTC and SFAC courses) has been far less than in recent seasons due to people becoming increasingly time poor, so it is simply a matter of persevering to ensure basic patrol requirements are constantly maintained and covered for each patrol team. As our first work crew arrived at the beach at around 4:30am, the most noticeable thing for that time of the day was the roar of the ocean.it was piercing as we arrived to setup for the day. And as dawn broke, we could see that the ocean was going to have the last word on the day s proceedings. After doing an assessment of the conditions in conjunction with the lifeguards at North Curly, South Curly and Freshwater, the first decision made was to cancel the Ocean Swim a tough call to make, but the seas were too big and too rough to safely run the event. As we passed that message out to the participants arriving at the club, we continued with our course preparations, not knowing if we were going to be able to run the main event, the 3 Points Challenge. After visiting Freshwater Beach, a decision was made to go ahead with a modified format, with a run from North Curl Curl all the way to Freshwater, where the competitors were able to get an abbreviated swim, before running back to North Curl Curl. To ensure it wasn t too easy, the final run leg included hitting the beach at South Curl Curl and making their way along the sand to the finish line back at North Curly. Whilst the modified course was not ideal, it still proved a great hit out for the almost 600 strong field, and it was well received by all that took part. It was in fact a credit to the race organizing committee that we were able to get anything run at all. So despite all the obstacles and late change of plans, it was another example of how our club members pull together to present what has become an iconic must do event every summer, which has always been praised for the professional manner in which it is run, combined with the friendly and supportive environment that is the result of our 130 plus club members that help run the event. We have to thank our major sponsor, Vivid Cleaning & Property Services, and also the many other event partners that supported us and made it a successful must do event. 6 Page 6 Tackling Club Sponsorship Finding sponsors has been an ever more difficult task in recent times, with many businesses struggling to find spare funds available to help other organisations such as surf life saving clubs. This year the surf club formed a small sponsorship and marketing team (nicknamed SAM) to tackle the challenge of identify new sponsors for the club. Richard Smith, Richard O Flynn and Greg Dearden made up the team under the direction of Louis Tassone, the club s Director of Marketing, and started back in the winter to formulate a plan to invigorate our sponsorship portfolio. Despite the challenges, the team have been successful in identifying a number of new sponsors, more so covering the Nippers. specifically around the Nippers. They have pulled together a comprehensive list potential sponsors, and will no doubt be hard at it as the season winds down to secure them up for the next season. If you know of any business that is keen to get involved with the club and develop a sponsorship partnership, please pass on their details to Louis Tassone at louis.tassone@gmail.com or on the mobile, Louis Tassone accepting a sponsorship cheque on behalf of the club from Trevor Sargeant from Freshwater Community Bank Big Wave Sunday Big seas may have disrupted the running of the 3 Points Challenge, but it was heaven sent for the local surfers, with 12 plus waves hitting the shore line, which made for some sensational big wave surfing Our 600 plus Nippers are Proudly Sponsored By F o r m o r e h i s t o r i c a l p h o t o s c h e c k y o u r c l u b W e b s i t e Get Your Latest Club Information Online If you are after the latest information on what is happening around your club, and you have access to the Internet, visit our club Website at All the latest activities and events information is maintained on the site, with regular updates to ensure the information is current.
