January 2016 Volume 15 Issue 1 The Buzz... January 2016 Ramblings from the Running Board In this Issue Ramblings from the Running Board Upcoming Events Board Meeting Minutes Hodag Tour II Oil Jim Hess Engagement Happy Holidays and Happy New Year! Where did 2015 go? First, let me say that the newsletter you are now reading is compliments of Mike Zahorik, who has graciously stepped up to put this issue of The Buzz together. Thank you Mike! We find ourselves staring down another winter. And although it has been a mild start and the snow and icy breezes have not yet materialized, we all know there is more to come. It seems like quite some time since I've spent any time with the Ts. Looking back, it was Labor Day & Rhinelander when we last had a T on the road. Four months? Time to make my car projects list and parts shopping list. Christmas all over again? Yes, it's Christmas every day that I can do something with a T. These long winter days are the perfect time to start that project you've been wanting to get going on. In this issue you will find the minutes from our Fall meeting where we discussed plans for activities and tours in The result of that meeting is the healthy slate of Upcoming Events you will find in these pages. Also you will find a report on the Hodag II tour that took place in (Go to P.5)

5 January 2016 Volume 15 Issue 1 Ramblings from the Running Board the Rhinelander area over Labor Day weekend. Our Christmas party is coming up very quickly. The information on the party is right here. Everyone has a great time at the party, so if you have not already done so, please get your money to Duane Nicholson so we can get an accurate count for ordering the food. We must know if you are coming by Saturday December 26 th. Another one of our favorite annual events, Tin Lizzie University is just a few weeks away. Please plan on joining us on January 16 th for a fun afternoon of T talk. It is the perfect prescription if you need a cure for the post-holiday winter blues. I am very pleased to see the Destination Door County Tour on the schedule again. Please plan on joining us for this much requested, almost annual event that kicks off our touring season on Memorial Day weekend. Mark your calendars for May and drive with us through beautiful Door County. We also have a couple of day-tours on the schedule this year. June 11 th will be the Return to the Yellowstone Trail Tour and we will also tour to the Horicon Marsh on August 13 th. Wow! So much to do and so little time. Come and be a part of these great activities. Take some time and take to the road. Model Ts make magic. Pete Ever wonder about those petcocks underneath the Car? There are two petcocks that are connected to the lower crank case sump. They are to check the amount of oil in the engine. I ve been told that if you open the bottom petcock and no oil comes out the engine needs oil. If oil does come out of the bottom petcock, then check the upper petcock. The petcocks are supposed to be the upper and lower limits of the oil level. But, just how much oil is in the engine if oil comes out of one or both petcocks? Well, if you drain the oil out of the engine and allow it to drain for a few minutes to make sure most of the oil is out, replace the drain plug and open the petcocks. Add oil one quart at a time and wait a few minutes between quarts to see if oil runs from the lower petcock. The bottom petcock will run when there are two quarts in the engine and the upper petcock will run when there is four quarts in the engine. This measurement is quite crude, an engine with only 2 quarts in it is asking for trouble. Make sure you check your oil every time you drive. Every so often leave the upper petcock open and add oil until it runs. You should change your every 750 miles. You should also add a half quart of ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid) to aide shifting. If you need a better method or easier method of checking the engine oil, you can install a dip stick or a sight glass. Both of these items are sold by vendors and makes keeping the proper oil level in our antique vehicles easier. Either way keep your eye on the oil level. Check your oil every time you use your car, it could save you a bigger head ache!

8 January 2016 Volume 15 Issue 1 The Hodag II Tour Rhinelander, Wisconsin September 4 th to 7 th, 2015 This tour was kind of a continuation of the first Hodag tour a couple of years ago. I say continuation because there s so much to see in the Rhinelander area that you can t begin to see it all in one long weekend. We saw more of it this weekend, but there s still lots more to see. The tour was hosted by the Bruso family, the WHOLE family: Kevin, Bob, Sarah, Dan, Teresa, Andi, Mark, and their kids. Everyone of them did something and it made for a wonderful tour! There were about 15 Model T s and about 35 participants. There were no major brake downs, attesting to the excellent condition and thorough preparedness of all the cars on the tour. The tour began with a nice dinner at Rocky s Roadhouse, just outside of Rhinelander. It was a nice place for a great get-together to begin the weekend. Saturday morning we were off to an early start with a full day s schedule. We visited the Three Lakes Winery, the Petroleum Museum, had lunch at the Friendship House Restaurant in Eagle River, and visited the World Snowmobile Headquarters and Museum. Then we toured on lots of wooded, back country roads, until arriving at the Cross Country Bar for the evening meal. We put on over 100 miles that day before returning to the Motel. Sunday was another busy tour day. We toured on lots more wooded, back country roads (there s lots of them up north!!!), and stopped at the Newbold Memorial Park for a rest stop. Continuing on through the wonderful scenery, we had a picnic lunch at Perch Lake County Park. It was very quiet and relaxing, and we had a wonderful lunch. Afterwards we toured on to the Wisconsin River Boat Cruise. This was a beautiful 2 hour cruise on the Wisconsin River down to the dam and back. The weather was so nice that most of us sat on the open top deck. Again, this was very relaxing and informative too. We saw Eagles and lots of other wildlife as pointed out by the boat Captain. After returning to the Motel, we rested up a bit in our hospitality room before leaving for the evening meal at The Haven Restaurant on the outskirts of Rhinelander. Dinner took longer than expected, but we still found time to have a guided tour of Oldenburg Group, Inc., Rhinelander Div., where Dan Bruso is a manager. Yes, it was Sunday Evening but there were a few guys working. They make extremely large metal fabrications, with many of them for the US military. We saw some items being made for Navy ships and they are HUGE! Thanks, Dan, for an interesting tour. On Monday, we only planned for the morning activities, but still packed a lot into just a few hours. Just one block from the host motel is the Courthouse. It s a

9 January 2016 Volume 15 Issue 1 beautiful old building and has been recently remodeled. Bob Bruso worked there as Clerk of Courts for many years and knows the building well. He arranged for us to see the building (normally closed on Labor Day) and gave us a guided tour. It was very interesting. Leaving there, we toured to Kruegers Saw Mill. Krueger built the entire mill himself and it s powered by a big diesel engine, which he demonstrated. He s also into drag racing and showed us his shop and dragster. His shop is spotless and nicely equipped, making some of us envious.. Leaving there, we gently toured through the Nicolet College Campus on the way to the Rhinelander Chamber Offices where there s a huge HODAG statue. Some of us had our picture taken in front of the Hodag. With that, the tour was over until the next time. This was a really nice tour. The weather was just right, the drives just the right length, the food good and just enough, and the laughs and fun..over the top! A side benefit on this tour was seeing the 26 T Coupe that Kevin bought and is now selling to his Brother, Dan. It s a really nice car! We also saw their Grandpa s original T Speedster that Kevin restored a few years ago. It s a tight fit getting into the Speedster, and seeing Dan get into it considering that he s well over 6 feet tall is really something. Way to go, Dan! Many thanks to the entire Bruso family for making this tour so much fun: Kevin, Bob, Sarah, Dan, Andi, Teresa, Mark and the kids too. Written by Keith Gumbinger with Credit for the photos to Shawn Gerrits.

10 January 2016 Volume 15 Issue 1 Dairyland Tin Lizzies NEWS FLASH Respectfully submitted by Keith Gumbinger on Sunday December 5:00PM Just a few minutes ago I found out some really good news that I'm happy to pass on to you. Jim Hess called me. I've been trying to call him for over a week. He doesn't have an answering machine and of course, no cell phone, and I just didn't know where he went. Jim called to tell me that he's engaged to be married to Sandy Graham. That's right, they're engaged. Considering that Jim is a life long bachelor, and is a senior citizen, this is BIG NEWS!!! Here's how he did it. They are down at Sandy's place in Kentucky in the process of selling Sandy's late mother's house. They went to the church last night where Sandy has been a member of for a long time. Jim asked the Pastor if he could speak to the congregation after the service was over. The Pastor agreed, and after the service he motioned to Jim to come forward. Jim then called Sandy to come up also, and he proposed to her in front of the whole congregation. Yes, of course, she accepted. She knew this was coming but didn't know just how Jim would do it. Now she knows! We have met Sandy and she is a very nice person. I think they make a very good couple. Sandy is a widow and her late husband was a car collector, like all of us are. He didn't collect Model T's, but Sandy is very familiar with the car collecting hobby. She has two of his collector cars and after she sells her house, they have to find a place to keep them. Jim's 2 garages are full of his 6 cars... probably no room there. No date or any time frame has been set for the wedding. There are lots of things to work out first, like selling Sandy's rather large house in Kentucky and what to do with her furniture, etc. *** BIG CONGRATULATIONS *** to Sandy and Jim. We are very happy for them and wish them a long and enjoyable marriage.
