5 WELCOME It is great to be back at Hervey Bay for the Queensland Youth Surf Life Saving Championship Our host, Hervey Bay Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC), has a proud lifesaving and surf sports pedigree and, therefore, a rich history in our Association. The beach here has always presented challenges for our athletes and these championships will not disappoint. Our Youth Championships were last held here in The 2016/17 season in Queensland has already seen many milestones for our Association. Queensland surf sports is in good shape, with our wonderful young athletes missing out by the narrowest of victories first place countback over our traditional rivals, New South Wales, at Alexandra Headland on the Sunshine Coast in late January. Well done team! Our lifesavers are involved in surf sports for fitness and to be rescue-ready. Surf sports involvement continues to give opportunities for our lifesavers, both young and old, to experience personal development through meeting the challenges of our wonderful sport. Coaches, parents and our surf clubs small and large are to be congratulated for their support. You are all mentors and motivators, thank you. Best wishes to all for a successful Youth Championships. It is an honour to host the championships and to be able to showcase the Fraser Coast. We are very sporty on the Family Friendly Fraser Coast and have raised champions across a number of sports. Championships of this magnitude take a great deal of organisation and I pay tribute to each and everyone involved Surf Life Saving Queensland, the Hervey Bay Surf Life Saving Club and of course, parents and competitors. On behalf of the Fraser Coast Regional Council and the community, we wish you a top competition. But, it s not all about the competition. The championships are also about making new friends and renewing old friendships. We hope you take home many happy memories of your time on the Fraser Coast. For those from out of town, welcome from the Fraser Coast, a region that has something to offer everyone from thrill seekers willing to jump out of aeroplanes, to moving encounters with humpback whales; or for the more relaxed, a shady tree on a riverbank under which you can sit and read a good book. When you unearth the charms of the Fraser Coast you will discover everything from unique antique doll collections, historic hotels and buildings, markets, military museums to contemporary arts and culture. We hope you take home many happy memories of the carnival.
