2 What is Tok Sen? What Is Tok Sen? The name Tok Sen The name Tok Sen is a bit of a misnomer. Tok in the Thai language is a verb that means to hammer or apply with force. Sen is the Thai word for string or thread. But in Traditional Thai Medicine Sen refers to the energy pathways that travel from the abdomen out to the mouth, nose, eyes, ears and the tips of the fingers and toes. There are 10 main Sen Lines, and it is through these lines the wind element lom travels. 2
3 Tok Sen In Tok Sen, the therapist uses a wooden hammer to lightly and rhythmically tap a wooden stick along Sen Lines and on Sen Points on the body. So Tok Sen literally means, To hammer the Sen. But there are parts of some Sen Lines that should never be tapped. Conversely, there are areas outside the Sen Lines that can and should be tapped. How Does Tok Sen Work? 1. The vibration caused by the tapping is believed to clear blocked energy and help increase blood flow to help with aches and pains. 2. The tapping may have a physical effect and release tension in muscles. 3. Tapping along a Sen Line or on a Sen Point may help conditions associated with that line or point 3
4 4. An hypnotic effect from the constant and steady tapping helps to relax the mind and body. The body is 70% water. The tapping of Tok Sen makes waves inside the body and makes the bad things go away. Tok Sen heals through vibration Ajahn Bundit Billy Sitthiwej Chiang Mai, Thailand The Sen Lines 10 main Sen Lines in the body. All start near the abdomen and travel distally. Sen Lines when addressed can relieve symptoms. Finding the Sen Lines is best developed with practice. 4
5 Tok Sen frees the flow of lom, which translates as wind or air. Other healing systems call it chi or prana. The Main Sen Lines Itha (ee-ta) 5

8 Ulangka (u-langh-ka) Tok Sen Tools The Power of a Tree: A tree struck by lightning is commonly used for carving the hammer and stick used in Tok Sen. 8
9 Tok Sen Tools Many variations of the hammer and stick: Hammers have a rectangular head or a cubed head. Sticks have a round tip, flat tip, or wedged tip. Tools must be easy and comfortable to use. Therapist controls weight and rhythm of tools. Tools should be a natural extension of the therapist s hands. Your heart to your hand every time you do Tok Sen In Thailand, it is common for one s teacher, or a Buddhist monk, to bless the Tok Sen tools. When not in use tools should be kept in a safe, respectful place. 9

11 Conditions Helped with Tok Sen Tok Sen has been traditionally used to treat: sore muscles joint pain pinched nerves diseases associated with specific Sen lines paralysis and diseases from supernatural causes *These same conditions can still be helped with Tok Sen today. Contraindications of Tok Sen Heart Problems High Blood Pressure Fever Pregnancy Any Metal in the Body Certain Skin Conditions Areas to Avoid Face and Scalp Directly on Any Bone On Any Joint Anterior Upper Arm (Brachial region) Distal Anterior Forearm (Wrist region) Chest and Neck 11
12 Teacher-Apprentice Relationships Unique Teaching Techniques Rules: Tapping Techniques 1. The stick is always placed one finger width from the bone. 2. Tapping is constant and steady. 3. The therapist must control stick placement and tapping pressure and the therapist always looks where the hammer and stick are striking. 12
13 The Tok Sen Session Palm-walking a section of the body, then tapping that area of the body. The treatment traditionally takes place on the floor and performed in the Face Up, Face Down, Sideline and Seated positions. *The order may vary depending on your client. A typical session lasts 90 minutes, and the client wears comfortable clothes. A session can be either relaxing, therapeutic, or both, but should never be painful to receive. Studying Tok Sen Basic Technique: 2 Day Training The basic techniques of Tok Sen can be learned in a two-day class, but it may take months to fully master the essence of this healing treatment. There are many schools in northern Thailand that offer classes, as well as some teachers in Europe and North America. Advanced Practice: Controlling weight and pressure, maintaining a steady rhythm, correctly placing the hammer and stick, and developing and maintaining clarity of mind are required for advanced practice.
