A BRIEF HISTORY OF & DAM The US Army Corps of Engineers constructed and maintains Center Hill Lake and Dam. Construction of the dam was authorized through the Flood Control Act of 1938, and Rivers & Harbors Act of Construction began in the late 1930s, but was postponed during World War II. Completion of the project was in The 64 mile long reservoir serves as a multi-purpose project, and is designed for flood control, hydropower production, and recreation. Other benefits include local water supply and natural habitats for native fish and wildlife. The lake is 64 miles long and has 415 miles of shoreline. Center Hill Lake is located on the Caney Fork River, a major tributary to the Cumberland River. There are a total of 34 recreation areas on the lake. Some of these include: 3 campgrounds 9 commercial marinas 2 state parks 1 state natural resource area There are 15,000 acres of public land open for hunting. Make sure to visit the Resource Manager s Office and Visitor Center. The center offers visitors a pictorial history of the construction of the dam and a wildlife exhibit featuring many of the birds, fish, and other wildlife found in the area. 4 Edgar Evins State Park at Night Taken by: Mark Taylor January 23, 2016 (Judges Choice & Most LIKES) Water Safety Tip #2 You may not plan on entering the water this winter, but always expect the unexpected by learning the warning signs of hypothermia: -Shivering (as hypothermia worsens, shivering stops) -Clumsiness or lack of coordination -Slurred speech or mumbling -Shallow breathing -Confusion /poor decision-making, -Drowsiness DECEMBER Christmas Day 31 US ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS

View from Center Hill Dam Taken by: Tony Luna Fall 2015 Pontoon Trip with Riley Taken by: Anneva Brown September 6, 2015 ( Most LIKES) Water Safety Tip #12 Trips and falls are involved in 19% of all water-related fatalities. Be mindful of your footing, wear light clothes when possible (warm clothes in the winter), and always wear your life jacket. FEBRUARY President s Day US ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS

Fox at Edgar Evins State Park Taken by: Lynn Huggins June 4, 2015 Water Safety Tip #3 A non-fastened life jacket does not count! When Deer Swimming at Edgar Evins State Park Taken by: Tony Mick February, 2016 (Most LIKES) wearing a life jacket, make sure it is snuggly fastened. If not fastened, a life jacket will not stay on when you are thrown from a boat or after a fall. 7 Happy Hollow Kayaking Taken by: Mistie Ragland August, 2016 Caney Fork River Taken By: Gail Beuerlein June, 2016 (MOST LIKEs) Water Safety Tip #11 When boating, keep spare clothes in a dry storage container. Falling in or flooding waders may lead to hypothermia, even if you have returned to shore. Having dry clothes to change into will slow down the hypothermia process. MARCH US ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS

Bush Family at the Lake Taken by: Jennifer Hudson Summer 2014 (Judges Choice & Most LIKES) Water Safety Tip #4 Before using your life jacket, make sure to always check: -The label for size & Coast Guard approval. -For broken parts, mold, & rips. -The fit by lifting at the shoulder when fastened. It should not slip over the chin and be snug, yet comfortable. OCTOBER Columbus Day US ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS

Old Sligo Bridge Taken by: Jason Sklenka Summer 2015 Water Safety Tip #10 Always pay attention. With summer boaters gone, there may be less lake traffic, but you still need to be cautious of debris such as logs, sticks up, sand bars, and trash. All of these may lead to damaged motors and boat hulls. Sligo Bridge Demolition Taken by: Tony Luna September 2015 (Most LIKES) APRIL US ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS

Kris Kutz Water Skiing Taken by: Mary Kutz Summer 2009 Water Safety Tip #5 Evening Fishing with Timmy Helm Taken by: Heather Brown July 31, 2014 (Most LIKES) Don t depend on your mobile phone as some areas of the lake may not have cell service. Play it safe and always keep a two-way radio nearby (being able to call for help immediately could save lives when things go wrong). SEPTEMBER Labor Day US ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS

Ragland Bottom Camping Taken by: Jean Baines August 10, 2016 (Most LIKES) Water Safety Tip #9 It is always important to make a float plan before heading to the lake. When boating, leave a plan with a reliable person in case you do not return or check-in as planned. It should include: your personal information, vessel description, and your Overlooking Big Hurricane Creek Taken by: Tom Hutchins September 3, 2016 departure/arrival times. 12 Center Hill Marina at Sunrise Taken by: LaNell Page Green June 11, 2016 Rainbow over Center Hill Marina Taken by: Jean Baines June 15, 2016 (Most LIKES) Water Safety Tip #6 Don t depend on your ears for trouble. Drowning is often silent, with little to no splashing to alert anyone of trouble. Always keep friends, family, and especially children in your line of sight. AUGUST US ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS

Pine Creek Raft Up during the Fun Run Taken by: Tom Hutchins August 2016 Water Safety Tip #8 Lakes are not swimming pools. What you may think is a shallow spot may actually be a sandbar or rock. One step off and you may end up in deep water. The opposite can also be true, so be aware when jumping in. An area that may appear to have deep water may have rocks and logs hidden underneath. It is for this Fall Cruise Taken by: Jean Baines Fall 2010 (Most LIKES) reason that a person should never dive headfirst, even if it is an area you have swam before. Lakes and rivers typically do not offer lifeguards, so watch children, and never go swimming alone. JUNE US ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS

Hurricane Marina Fireworks Taken by: Lynn Huggins July 2, 2016 Water Safety Tip #7 Bush Boys Celebrating the 4th Taken by: Amanda Bush July 4, 2015 (Most LIKES) Be prepared to be out after dark. Boaters may not plan to be out late, but engine failure, lack of gas, weather, and being lost are all factors that may keep you out. Always check your lights, keep a lake or river map nearby, and have a radio and flare gun in case of an emergency. JULY Independence Day US ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS
