1 SUNSHINE COAST INDOOR ROWING CLUB Editor: Yvonne Duffy Jordan and Jack from Kawana Waters State College The Cooroora Special Emergency Cadet Group had a great day assisting with the timekeeping at the 2017 QLD Special Olympics State Games at the Caloundra Aquatic Centre in April. Thank you to Indoor Rowing Club member, Ray Pratt, for organising the group. They did an excellent job. Wendy organised some friends to come along as well. Thanks to Tracey from the Indoor Rowing Club, Judeth, David and Ann. Jordan, the Captain of Kawana Waters State College, and Jack also put in a top effort and made a great impression. The Special athletes are an absolute inspiration. They are just amazing.

The Secondary Campus, where the QLD Indoor Rowing Championships, will be held is in the middle of the photo. The Performing Arts Theatre is at the back of the College near the ovals. The Kawana Aquatic Centre is next to the College. On the other side of the Aquatic Centre is the Sunshine Coast Stadium. Lake Kawana is opposite the College. The Lake is very popular for Dragon Boating, Outrigging, Kayaking, Rowing and Open Water Swimming. The new Sunshine Coast University Hospital at Birtinya is only a few minutes from the College and is on the other side of the Lake. To the east of the College are the magnificent beaches of Wurtulla, Bokarina and Warana. Kawana Waters Surf Life Saving Club and Kawana Shopping World are about 5 minutes to the north. RECOMMENDED ACCOMMODATION for the QLD Championships. BEACHSIDE RESORT at Buddina has sponsored the trophies for the Championships for 6 years. The Resort is opposite Kawana Waters Surf Life Saving Club and has excellent beach and mountain views. The trophies are for the best Junior and Senior Male and Female competitors. 3 2017 QLD INDOOR ROWING CHAMPIONSHIPS DATE: Sunday, 4 th June, 9 am to approximately 3.45 pm VENUE: EVENTS: Challenge Performing Arts Theatre, Kawana Waters State College, Bokarina, Sunshine Coast Politicians Mixed Relay, 100 m, 500 m, 1000 m, 2000 m, 1 minute, Mixed Relay and Schools AGE GROUPS: Under 10 to 90+ HOSTS: Sunshine Coast Indoor Rowing Club and Kawana Waters State College PATRONS: Mr. Colin Allen-Waters and Mr. Ashley Robinson TROPHIES and MEDALS: There will be QLD medals for all age groups for 1 st, 2 nd and 3rd. For the winning school in the Schools Challenge, there will be a trophy for the school and medals and a QLD water bottle for all team members for 1 st, 2 nd and 3 rd. There will be trophies, sponsored by Beachside Resort, for the best Junior and Senior Male and Female at the QLD Championships. Please try to get your entry in well before then to make life easier for the organisers. ENGRAVING: will be available at the QLD Championships. Cost is just $6 per medal. You can also have medals from other sports engraved. For every medal that is engraved the Sunshine Coast Indoor Rowing Club will receive $1. What a great fundraiser! RAFFLE: There will be a raffle at the QLD Championships to raise much needed funds for insurance, website fees etc. Please bring a donated item along to add to the excellent selection of prizes. Late Entries will only be accepted, if there is a spare machine in the particular event. It is too difficult for organisers to be adding extra events. It is only a 2minute walk away. COST: The first visit is free. Then the cost is $5 per session or you can become a member for a very reasonable price. The September to November dates suit Alex Surf Club at this stage. That could possibly change, when the 2017/8 Surf Sports Calendar comes out. The Training Room is a popular venue for the Surf Club.

Concept2 in Geelong has offered the Sunshine Coast Indoor Rowing Club 4 new Model D machines with PM5s at a very good price plus they are paying the freight.

Prices for new machines have really gone up in the last year or so. The machines will be used at the QLD Championships and then will go home with their new owners.

5 Concept2 in Geelong has offered the Sunshine Coast Indoor Rowing Club 4 new Model D machines with PM5s at a very good price plus they are paying the freight. The Sunshine Coast Indoor Rowing Club would like to thank them for their generous offer. The 4 machines are now available for sale at a great price of $1470. Prices for new machines have really gone up in the last year or so. The machines will be used at the QLD Championships and then will go home with their new owners. We have had similar deals since That is why so many Club members and supporters have their own rowing machine. It is really great having your own machine at home. I bought one in I then upgraded mine for a newer one in 2015 and sold my original one for an excellent price. Concept2 rowing machines are virtually indestructible. They get so much use in gyms, surf clubs, rowing clubs and schools. If you want to put your name down for one of the 4 machines, please contact Wendy. We will ask you to pay a deposit of $500 As soon as possible and the balance by 3 days before the Championships on Sunday, 4 th June at Kawana Waters State College. You also have the advantage, that the machine will already be assembled. I have completed my Diploma of Nursing and now have a five week clinical placement at the Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital to finish it off.

6 WENDYS RECOVERY NEWS WENDY has now reached the 12week mark of her recovery from open heart/ quad bypass surgery in February. She is back doing gentle swimming and rowing. Her aim is to compete in the QLD Indoor Rowing Championships in the shorter events. Well the time has finally come. I have completed my Diploma of Nursing and now have a five week clinical placement at the Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital to finish it off. I have enjoyed my journey through this course, which has at times proved to be challenging, and will now see my long-time dream fulfilled! If you have a dream or goal go for it, you might just surprise yourself I did!!
