13 TEXSAR - Cathy Frye Rescue 2013 Cathy Frye and her husband Rick McFarLand were camping in Big Bend National Park when it closed due to the federal budget debate. They moved to the state park and became lost while hiking on unfamiliar trails with only a small amount of food and water. They decided to split up because Frye couldn't go farther. McFarland reached help at a ranger station, but couldn't find Frye when they returned to the spot. A search started Saturday morning. Cathy was dehydrated and barely alive when rescued and taken to a hospital at El Paso.
14 TEXSAR - Memorial Day Flooding 2015 Heavy rains fell during Memorial Day weekend leading to a rapid rise in the Blanco and San Marcos Rivers. The Blanco River at Wimberley rose from near 5 feet at 9pm to near 41 feet by 1am. TEXSAR Flood and Swiftwater Techs rescued 37 people in the flood waters near Martindale 12 people perished on the Blanco that night. TEXSAR provided FAST, K9, Aerial, IMT, and GSAR resources
15 TEXSAR - Hot Air Balloon Crash 2016 July 30th, a hot air balloon crashed after hitting power lines near Lockhart, TX resulting in the deaths of all 16 passengers. This was the largest loss of life in a hot air balloon crash in the United States and the second deadliest in history. At the request of Caldwell County HSEM, TEXSAR deployed IMT and GSAR resources to assist with evidence recovery, ground search assistance, and IMT support.
16 TEXSAR - Zuzu Verk Missing Person 2016 October 12th 2016, 22 year old, Sul Ross Student Zuzu Verk went missing after a date with her boyfriend Robert Fabian. On October, 18th at the request of the Texas Rangers and Alpine PD, TEXSAR deployed Lost Person Behavior, Search Management, K9 and GSAR resources to assist with the search for Zuzu Verk. Zuzu s body was found in February, 2017 in a shallow grave on the outskirts of Alpine. Criminal charges have been filed against Robert Fabian and another party in the Zuzu Verk case.
