A motorbike trip along the island s secret little roads; surfing at internationally renowned spots like Hikkaduwa and Arugam Bay; an escapade into the mountainous region of Ella; and even an elephant safari. 5 YOUR TRIP IN 9 STAGES STAGE 1 Colombo International Airport Hikkaduwa [150 km* - 3H riding]: Ayubowan! Having arrived at the airport, you immediately set off southward to Hikkaduwa. This west-coast resort gained a reputation for its exceptional surfing spot back in the '70s. You take possession of your Royal Enfield and go for a spin nearby, heading for the beach. Overnight stay at the hotel. Hikkaduwa Dickwella [150 km* 4H riding]: STAGE 2 After riding the morning's finest waves, hop onto your motorcycle and make for Dickella on the south coast! You border the coast, visit Amangama, Mirissa and travel around magnificent Weligama Bay, a stronghold of the stilt fisherman emblematic of Sri Lanka. Then you swap your bike for a board and go surfing off pretty, crescent-shaped Mirissa Bay. Overnight stay at the hotel. 4

6 YOUR TRIP IN 9 STAGES Dickwella Yala [120 km* 3H riding]: A surfing session at dawn, when the waves are just perfect. After filling your lungs with sea air, ride towards the southeast tip of the country - a superb road that runs alongside Bundala National Park, well-known for its bird diversity. You arrive on the fringes of Yala National Park, where you spend the night in a tent camp near the ocean in Kirinda. Tonight, you have the choice between a safari (optional) or go surfing around Yala Reserve. STAGE 3 Yala Arugam Bay [180 km* 6H riding]: Today you ride to the east coast and Arugam Bay, a surfing spot known to aficionados worldwide. You'll unload your gear for two nights, and enjoy the location's relaxed and authentic atmosphere. At day's end, catch some waves before going back to your hotel for the night. STAGE 4 5

7 YOUR TRIP IN 9 STAGES Arugam Bay: Early in the morning, savour the early-season serenity of Arugam Bay - the Indian Ocean is all yours! Then you head south on a 60 km loop to reach the spots of Okanda and then Kumana, on the fringes of the eponymous national park, renowned for its profusion of bird life. STAGE 5 Overnight stay at the hotel. STAGE 6 Arugam Bay - Ella [210 km* 6H riding]: If the waves are in the mood, set off at daybreak for a spot called Potuvil or Whiskey Point. Then you'll ride close to Gal Oya National Park before climbing into the refreshingly cool area of tea plantations. After taking in waterfalls and jaw-dropping panoramic views, you reach Ella. To have a glimpse of this beautiful area, nothing better than going for a walk to Little Adam s Peak! Overnight stay at the hotel. 6

8 YOUR TRIP IN 9 STAGES STAGE 7 Ella Uda Walawe [190 km* 6H riding]: You leave tea plantations, including the famous Lipton one, and head south on a wonderful little country road. You stop off at Buduruwagala, a Buddhist site where six colossal statues frame a 16 metre-high Buddha. Then resume your journey to Uda Walawe National Park and its savanna, which is home to a large elephant colony. Overnight stay in a luxury camp. Uda Walawe Matara [130 km* 3H riding]: STAGE 8 An early-morning safari, then off to the southwest coast of Sri Lanka with your boards. This final stage in your Sri Lankan road trip leads you through rice fields and the heart of rural life. You arrive in Ahangama, a spot near Weligama and Koggala Lake. Say goodbye to your motorcycles but not your surf boards, with which you go surf one last time on one of the neighboring spots! Overnight stay at the hotel. 7

12 MY CHECKLIST Appropriate equipment is a component of a successful journey! Travel lightly, TRY TO STAY UNDER 45LBS (20 KGS) BAGS: A sailor bag would be perfect, a walker's bag too (without steel bar). You can close it with a padlock if you want to (Don t forget to tag it before leaving with your address. Also with the address of Vintage Rides in India) A small backpack of 20 litres is advised for daily necessities such as camera, sunscreen lotion.
