Alstom Ocean Energy Path towards Industrailsation Ken Street 18 th April 2013
Three main activities in four Sectors Equipment & services for power generation Equipment & services for rail transport ALSTOM THERMAL POWER ALSTOM TRANSPORT Equipment & services for power transmission ALSTOM RENEWABLE POWER ALSTOM GRID
Alstom Renewable Power: Technology suited to all renewable energy sources HYDRO OFFSHORE WIND ONSHORE WIND SOLAR THERMAL GEOTHERMAL BIOMASS TIDAL ENERGY For new and existing installs WAVE ENERGY
Overview of the main existing or under development technologies WIND ENERGY TIDAL ENERGY WAVE ENERGY OTHERS FIXED OFFSHORE TIDAL ENERGY Underwater currents WAVE ENERGY SYSTEMS Wave energy OSMOTIC PRESSURE Differing salinity gradient in water FLOATING OFFSHORE TIDAL RANGE Level gap between high tide and low tide using a reservoir OCEAN THERMAL ENERGY CONVERSION (OTEC) Difference in temperature between surface water and deep water
Alstom Ocean Energy Alstom acquired 100% ownership of Tidal Generation Limited on 29 th January 2013 Alstom tidal turbine buoyant concept is a key advantage for O&M 2 Offices for Tidal: 1 in Nantes and 1 in Bristol Wave energy: investment in AWS
Tidal Market The concept was developed to address deep water tidal resource with an adequate O&M solution The UK Government s resource assessment (Black & Veatch Consulting Ltd.,2005) identified that 65% of the tidal resource was in waters deeper than 30m Most of the Raz Blanchard and Fromveur resource has more than 35m depth (and up to 70m) UK tidal sites (source: ) Raz Blanchard bathymetry
ALSTOM tidal turbine concept Disconnectable buoyant nacelle 3-blades, upstream pitch controlled to control loads Gearbox, induction generator, frequency converter and transformer Grid compliant power at 6.6kV exported via a three-phase wet mate connector mounted in the base of the turbine. 2,7 m/s. 18m diam. Weight: 148 tons Depth: 35 80m ALSTOM Tidal turbine
Maximum yield with minimum structural loads Sites often do not have the Ebb and Flood tides that are 180 apart Yawing allows the turbine to face the oncoming flow to: Maximise energy extraction Minimise structural loads Rotor is up-stream of turbine and foundation: Optimum blade design with pitching Minimises inlet flow distortion Minimises structural dynamic issues Avoid flow disturbance from nacelle Flow Bearing Thruster
Buoyant nacelle minimise O&M The concept is built upon the solution to the problem of installing, recovering and maintaining the turbine. Buoyant nacelle removes the need to use heavy lift vessels for O&M operations.
Designed for transportation 10
1MW turbine being put in the water Conventionnal quay side facility
Roadmap September 2010 Jan ??? kW deployed at EMEC in Orkney islands and generating to the grid 1MW Turbine deployed at EMEC for two years of tests Pilot farms projects Start of serial production Generating to the grid Pilot farms: an essential step that needs support Long term market visibility to trigger investment (R&D and CAPEX)
