Project Description: The harbor was initially designed to accommodate 125 vessels; however, only 35 vessels are currently using the harbor year round because the vessels incur damages during storms. The Limited Reevaluation Report recommends construction of a 700-foot breakwater and includes a 40- foot extension of the existing breakwater to the west for reduction in the existing gap width, and the a 75-foot-long extension of the existing fill at the dock approach to further reduce the gap BUILDING STRONG
Pacific Ocean Division Navigation Program Investigations Feasibility Studies Little Diomede Harbor, Alaska Craig Harbor, Alaska Arctic Deep Draft Ports, Alaska Kotzebue Harbor, Alaska St. George Harbor Tinian Harbor, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) Rota Harbor, CNMI
LITTLE DIOMEDE HARBOR, AK Nome Fairbanks Anchorage Juneau Location: Diomede is located on the west coast of Little Diomede Island in the Bering Straits, 135 miles northwest of Nome with a population of 146. It is only 2.5 miles from Big Diomede Island, Russia, and the international boundary lies between the two islands. Project Description: A protected harbor would reduce the cost of goods transport, improve and increase the tour-boat landings (income to village), and improve the safety of small craft operations required for subsistence and customary trade activities BUILDING STRONG
CRAIG HARBOR IMPROVEMENT, AK Nome Fairbanks Anchorage Juneau Location: Craig is located on a small island off the west coast of Prince of Wales Island, and is connected by a short causeway. It is 31 road miles west of Hollis. It lies 56 air miles northwest of Ketchikan and 220 miles south of Juneau. Project Description: Feasibility study recommends constructing approximately 1,933-feet of rubblemound breakwaters to protect a naturally-deep 10.1-acre moorage basin to accommodate approximately 145 vessels BUILDING STRONG
ARCTIC DEEP DRAFT PORT, AK Nome Fairbanks Anchorage Juneau Location: Nome lies 539 air miles northwest of Anchorage, 102 miles south of the Arctic Circle, and 161 miles east of Russia. Project Description: The Tentatively Selected Plan (TSP) includes a 2,150- foot (655 meters) causeway extension, a 450-foot (137 meters) long dock, and dredging to -28 feet (-8.5 meters) mean lower low water (MLLW). This selected depth was based on the projected future with-project vessel characteristics expected at the Nome location. Approximately 441,000 cubic yards of dredged material would be removed from the harbor and deposited on the project s beach down drift (to the east) BUILDING STRONG
KOTZEBUE NAVIGATION IMPROVEMENTS, AK Nome Fairbanks Anchorage Juneau Location: Kotzebue is located on a spit at the Northwest end of the Baldwin Peninsula. Kotzebue is a hub community about 40 miles north of the Arctic Circle, 350 miles northwest of Anchorage and 185 miles northeast of Nome. Project Description: This study will consider the benefits and costs for navigation improvements for freight and fuel transportation in and out of the community. A road presently being designed and constructed by the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities to Point Blossom, 8 miles south of Kotzebue, opens alternatives to develop deeper draft facilities. Since a primary concern is the shallow draft operations required to get to the present docks at the north end of Kotzebue, The City of Kotzebue, the Northwest Arctic Borough, and the State of Alaska DOT are interested in studying alternatives that include the Cape Blossom location. 29 BUILDING STRONG
ST. GEORGE HARBOR, AK - (GI) $700,000 Feasibility 30 BUILDING STRONG Nome Fairbanks Anchorage Juneau Location: The City of St. George is located on the northeast shore of St. George Island, the southern-most of five islands in the Pribilofs. It lies 47 miles south of the St. Paul Island, 750 air miles southwest of Anchorage and 250 miles northwest of Unalaska. Project Description: This Feasibility study will consider modification and/or realignment of the breakwaters, entrance channel, and inner harbor basin to reduce erosion and wave overtopping of the main breakwater, and adverse wave and seiche conditions in the Harbor. The use of offshore breakwaters to improve conditions will also be investigated.
Rota Harbor, Rota, CNMI Location: Rota Harbor is located on the southwest coast of the island of Rota, CNMI. Rota Harbor was constructed by the Corps of Engineers under the authority of Section 107 of the River and Harbor Act of 1960, as amended. Project Description: The Federal project consists of an entrance channel 685 feet long, 300 feet wide, 20 feet deep; a turning basin 440 feet long, feet wide, 16.5 feet deep; a revetted mole 535 feet long, 10 feet high; and a basin extension 280 feet long, 150 feet wide and 16.5 feet deep.
Tinian Harbor, Tinian, CNMI Location: Tinian Harbor is located on the southwest coast of the island of Tinian, CNMI. The existing harbor was constructed in by the Navy Seabees during World War II. Project Description: The protective breakwater has a total length of 4,600 feet, constructed in two segments. The initial 1,100 feet extending seaward from the shore (northwest breakwater) was constructed of a single row of steel sheet piling. This section of the breakwater is completely deteriorated, with large gaps where no sheet pile remnants remain. The 3,500-foot-long main breakwater, running parallel to shore, was constructed of cellular steel sheet pile cells filled with dredged material and capped with concrete. Feasibility Study. Modify the existing navigation features of Tinian Harbor to address adverse wave conditions within the harbor cased by deteriorated breakwater. Feasibility Cost Sharing Agreement: Dec 4, 2015
