WESTERN WOOD The Northern California/Lake Tahoe Chapter of The Antique and Classic Boat Society, Inc. Volume 24, Issue 3 Quarterly Newsletter Summer 2007 President s Message... Summer is definitely here - so it s time to think safety first! All of us are anxious to be on the water - to getting the boat wet. However, before we do this let s all give some thought to putting safety first. Towing your boat - leave plenty of room between you and the car ahead, remember stopping distance increases greatly, especially as speed increases. After driving 30 minutes or so, stop and check the tires, wheel bearings, hitch and lights. Be sure to do this before you are in a place with no service help! When you get to the lake, let the trailer brakes and bearings cool before backing into the water. Hot brakes will warp and hot bearings will tend to pull water into the hubs. Boat and trailer registration - carry your boat and trailer registration with you and have the current California boat registration sticker on the boat. Launch ramp etiquette is important - remember to have lines, fenders, picnic baskets, etc. in the boat before the launch. Do not delay the next boat in line. And don t forget to bring your sunscreen and put it on along with a hat and sunglasses. We just lost a family member to skin cancer... an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of care. Coast Guard approved life vests - have enough on aboard for each person, remember to show your guests where they are located. Children must wear their s at all times. A Coast Guard safety course is a great idea and a solid reminder to think about safety while on the water. Jim Senior, 925/ ; Gene Mooring, 530/ ; and Bruce Adair, 925/ are experienced with the Coast Guard and can direct you to a safety course. At the Crossings of Chris Crafts, Steve Hanst, 702/ and Herb Hall, 530/ conducted a boat handling clinic. If you have any questions or need a phone refresher give them a call. Remember, one of the reasons our club was formed was to have FUN with boats. Have FUN on the way to the lake, have FUN on the lake, and always - be safe!!!! Norm

EXCITING THINGS HAPPENING with your PHILANTHROPY COMMITTEE by STEVE CAPLAN The Northern California/Lake Tahoe Chapter Philanthropy Committee has been hard at work this year planning and executing projects and events. For starters, our first Kit Boat Project is near completion. It s being built at Lake Tahoe by the Boy Scouts. Half of the proceeds of the sale of the boat, trailer & motor will be donated to the Boy Scouts, one quarter will be donated to the Tahoe Maritime Museum operating fund, and one quarter will be added to our Endowment. So far, under the direction of John Lahti, this project has gone well and the Scouts are having fun. The sale of the boat will be the next part of the project and our goal is to net $10,000. We currently have two more boats to build. Paul Mehus has agreed to be the Chair of the Kit Boat Program and many more of NC/LT ACBS members have agreed to support the program in one way or another. If you are interested in helping with this exciting program, please give Paul a call. Besides your physical help as mentors, we need vintage hardware, steering wheels and cabling, trailer parts, paint, and varnish. Our other exciting project for this quarter is participation in the VIP Event at the Concours d Elegance on Thursday, August 9 th. By bringing attendees to the first time Concours Event and helping with providing volunteers, our Chapter will receive half the proceeds of the day with the other half going to the Tahoe Yacht Club. Half of the proceeds received by ACBS will be donated to the Dock Restoration Project at Sugar Pine Point. We re very excited to be a part of the rebuilding of the docks that plans to make them more boater friendly. All in all, our budget for 2007 hopes to make donations totaling $32,500. and to grow the Endowment by $21,000. We will have more to share with you regarding our successes at the Annual Meeting in November. y 4

Looking Astern I ve just returned from the Tahoe Get Around - it was spectacular! The day was much about Thunderbird and the joy and excitement which comes from being up close and personal. Seeing Thunderbird coming across the lake, two of us just had to shoot right out to greet her. This was a peek experience. Unreal. Fantastic. Two Allison V-12s on song. Wow! At one point, Razz was in the bubble wake back of the four exhaust pipes. What a sound. Jezz Starting at Meek s Bay, runabouts fell in line zipping along at about 25-mph gathering more boats as we worked our way around the lake. An 18 Chris Craft played dolphin in Thunderbird s wake listing 15 degrees like a surfer. Nothing but fun. TAHOE GET AROUND s GET TOGETHER WEEKEND! by Jerry Turney Rounding Dollar Point cross wakes of Thunderbird and 20 runabouts created prop chop 3 high. No problem. That cold lake water on a hot day felt terrific. Picking up more wood at Sierra Boat Company and GarWood restaurant the armada headed off to Incline Village. The Lake was glass smooth with little or no wind. Runabouts took the opportunity to spread all over the lake in a huge flanking formation while heading for the East Side and the Thunderbird Mansion. Some dropped anchor for BYOL. Several of us continued around the 70 mile shoreline returning home mid afternoon. Now, if that wasn t enough, the next day when heading for fuel at Tahoe City The Razz was flanked by Thunderbird (70 ) AND Dave Olsen s (32 ) Thunderchick. This was just too much for any mortal handle. A huge Congrats to Greg Joseph for organizing the second annual Tahoe Get Around. 5

Shop Talk by Wayne Mooers Continued from the last quarterly issue of Western Wood.... Working with classic show quality leather mediums is a more hands-on project than sewing up vinyl interiors Rod explained in that the leather panels are smaller and part of the craftsmanship comes in selecting and then blending the color match and durability of the panels accordingly, and fitting all the puzzle together. With leather, there is a much longer time factor involved in the lay out and planning stage as compared to vinyl roll material. We special order the leather often allowing for an 8 week lead time for delivery alone. Rod is currently putting together a special hand selected deep maroon (historically called red) leather interior for John Russell s triple cockpit Gar Wood for the Concours showing. So now we know Todd has the wood, and Rod has 6 the leather.so where s the engine stuff guys? Rod and I were talking about exact restoration of products to original values, and the concern for using old fashion kapok covered seat cushions in place of contemporary foam materials as a possible classic boating safety issue. Rod advocates keeping currently approved foam-type life jackets onboard in place of old kapok filled jackets for example, and reminds us reworked kapok cushions are not approved personal flotation devices (life jackets) by today s standards. Sewing up vinyl interiors is an equally important part of Rod s business and you ll notice in the new 2007 Antique and Classic Boat Society, Inc. Directory, Rod and his family personally enjoy a variety of classic and production ski boats t h e m s e l v e s. Upside down at the moment getting hull work done is Rod s rare Italian Abbate, Super Villa d Este model, - his personal project boat. Chances are, and in keeping with the era, it will have an award winning Rod Souza vinyl

interior. Twenty minutes north on 101 in Healdsburg Roy Domke and Rick Thomson of Runabout Reflections have a bunch of boats happening. They are anxiously awaiting carburetor parts so they can fire up wine maker Tom Rochioli s big Chris Craft Holiday utility. Roy and Rick have spent 18 months bringing VINTAGE 51 back to Concours condition. Rick explained only 90 of these big open utilities were built with their rolling bleached blond covering boards being one of the distinctive features of these models and the era. Lee Chase has the sister ship My Girls, so start looking for the other 88 units! In order to pull the sheer line radius to original specs the final deck covering board part of the VINTAGE 51 restoration required special ordering of 3 rare and hard to find Honduras mahogany trees measuring 16 quarter (4 ) x 30 x 14 long. (Converting that into board feet, it s 4 x 30 x 168 over 144 equals 140 bf each x 3 pieces equals 420 total bf x say $xx.xx/ bf equals $,$$$.$$. Ah, the smell of springtime mahogany sawdust and grapes growing in Healdsburg! Rick admitted he did a lot of looking, layout, and sweating before he pulled the saw trigger and made his first saw cuts into this critical woodworking phase. Then after you work the trees into the shape of a boat deck, it is acid bleached (which initially turns the wood black colored before it is neutralized) and then the blond stain finally happens and you breathe a little easier as the light mahogany color comes back, Rick revealed. Make sure you give Rick and Roy thumbs up when VINTAGE 51 is unveiled at the August Concours. Director Ralph Wallen fesses up he and Jack McManus are also messing around with a 1939 Chris Craft barrelback someplace in the Healdsburg area. Maybe they will bring her out of the shop in time for Clear Lake s Wood & Glory to side tie with John Lahti s sister ship. Looking for Philippine mahogany? Get a yard man to take you up to the stash on the 7 third deck level, right side, MacBeath Hardwood Company warehouse, San Francisco. Selection of 14 foot 4/4 through 8/4 in stock at competitive prices. Looking for hard to find genuine mahogany? Owner John MacBeath was showing me last week a new container full of Sipo (pronounced c-po) he just imported which has a beautiful golden red color and grain pattern like the old genuine (Honduras) mahogany. Check it out - it could fit nicely into the classic boat look. Lastly, Herb Hall reports Sierra Boat Company is in full swing heading into the new season start. Contrary to certain rumors, the company has not been sold, yet the family owned company is entertaining offers at this time. Business and the Concours go on as usual, and Herb is not moving to Auburn - yet! Herb and Barb enjoyed a trip to warmer Florida in March where they visited and were impressed with the Mt Dora Show. Word from Herb and other chapter members who made the warm weather trip highly recommends our members experience the wooden boat event also, because as Herb put it, it s more than a show it s a wooden boat enthusiast happening! See you SOME DAY on the water. And, if you have something happening in your shop, or member garage that you want to share in the next SHOP TALK column, send me a signal!

Looking Astern... remembering Bass Lake March 3/4, 2007 by Barbara Walker To me, there is nothing more exciting than pulling that cover off, checking the battery, putting in the plug, and then hooking up our favorite woody to tow to Bass Lake - the first wet boating event of the season. Whether you come from Southern California or Northern California your woody just pushed you to that tranquil pine studded place called Bass Lake. You launch your treasure, fire up that engine and hope it fires right up - because you have just launched your sole transportation for the weekend. Goodbye car - hello woody. Friday Evening, we hop in our woody, the only way to Friday nights hot dog bash at Miller s Landing. It is so great to see all our friends once again and see their shining beauties at the docks. Saturday, begins with a beautiful continental breakfast at Duceys. Around 10 AM the Lion s Club Boat Show begins. Because we love our woodies so much, we do not keep them in boat show prison. Every woody comes and goes whenever she wants. We don t want her getting anxious just bobbing at the docks! Saturday night s dinner was at the tennis courts this year. Sounds strange, it was magical, beautifully set up and lighted for an enchanting evening experience. Sunday s Poker Run, was poolside, overlooking beautiful Bass Lake. We let our woodies run and find all of the poker cards. Then our captains answered all the questions right to the questionnaire, right? 10

Awards were given out at the brunch. Skipper s Choice went to: Old School owned by Bob & Nick Robertson. People s Choice was: Little Fuzzy II Captained by John & Mary Baird. Best Restoration was for: Chili Pepper restored by Bob & Glenda Newcomer. The Most Original Boat was owned by Steve & Kari Ciambrone, a 1959 Wixard, not yet named. Thanks to all the woody owners for coming to this wonderful boating event. Special thanks go to chairman Cary Winslow and the Lions Club who make this show possible. SEE YOU NEXT YEAR. 11 More of Bass Lake on page 20

Looking Astern... A Crossing Of Chris Crafts by Dave Lyon June 16, 2007 was another beautiful and sunny day at Lake Tahoe. After a fun and relaxing time at McKinney Shores Woodie Whoopie the evening before, everyone was ready for the first Lake Tahoe wooden boat show of the season! 33 beautiful antique and classic wooden boats were on display at Obexer s Marina, and almost 100 ACBS members, their friends, and family were on hand to welcome the first week of Summer, and celebrate Father s Day Weekend. Once again, our sincere thanks and appreciation to Keith & Sarah Fields and the hard working cast and crew at Obexer s Boat Company Marina for helping provide the perfect location for us to gather, and for joining us as we celebrated the day. Attending ACBS members included Steve & Cheryl Caplan in Viking, Bob Bush and family in Mr. President, Mike & Kathy Scroogie in Good Grief, and Bob & Ellen Swensen in Tucker. Honorary Chris Craft For A Day attendees included Roy Dryer in Friva, (he claims it has Chris Craft gauges) Lee Chase in Mountain Lyon, Herb Hall in Selvaggio, and Jim & Bernadette Sweeney in Little Bear. Special thanks to Dodge Boat Owner s Association President Dave Triano, and ACBS board member Rich Fisher for their expertise in helping guide our beautiful boats safely into the harbor. Only one boat reportedly floundered on the rocks and sank. Special appreciation goes out once again to ACBS founding member Steve Lapkin and the crew at H20Mark.com for providing a wonderful array of morning snacks and munchies, plus the always popular champagne & orange juice for everyone to enjoy. Additional recognition goes to Sam Lab for helping keep local cats away from the boats. My daughter Hannah s favorite part was the wonderful homemade ice cream provided by the Tahoe Maritime Museum, who were on hand to give rides in Miss Tahoe and sign-up new members. Once again our luncheon was the highlight of the day. We enjoyed a wonderful sit down BBQ meal in the historic barn at Obexer s, catered by Carina s of South Shore. The grilled chicken and tri-tip were 12

excellent, and by 1:00pm there wasn t much left on the buffet table save for a few chocolate cookies, and Bob Bush soon made off with those! Many thanks to Roy Dryer who arranged for the wine to be donated by Ironstone Vineyards, and to Tammi Lyon for the table centerpieces. Generous sponsors of the 2007 Crossing Of Chris Crafts also included Tahoe Powerboat Company, & the Dave Triano Family, and Obexer s Boat Company & Marina. Our tradition of presenting the very informal but highly prestigious Best Chris Craft Of Show Award continued this year. After due consideration and several more mimosas, top honors went to Star Dust, a beautiful triple cockpit runabout owner and maintained by the Lake Tahoe Maritime Museum, and used in the museum s popular Ride Boat Program. In the 1930 s and early 40 s, Star Dust was used as a ride boat at the Meeks Bay Resort. A true original Tahoe woodie! A Very Special Thanks to everyone who signed up for this fun annual event and made our first boat show of the 2007 season a whole lotta fun! 13 More Crossing of Chris Crafts on page 19

Looking Astern... Wood & GloryIX - Clearlake, CA June 1/3, 2007 Wood & Glory IX turned out to be the best one yet. The weather was ideal, the water conditions were great, and the boats were all beautiful. About 170 of us gathered Friday evening for a Woodie Whoopie pot luck barbecue at the home of John & Mary Lahti. With many boats tied off at the docks and still more anchored just off shore; it was a beautiful site as the sun went down. 15 new chapter members participated in this their first event. With over 60 boats registered, we managed to have nearly 50 of them in one long line for the cruise of Lakeport on Saturday morning. Our Wood & Glory (1966 Century Coronado) led the cruise from Konocti Harbor Resort through Kolaih Bay and North along A Gathering of Wood Boats the Buckingham peninsula past Kamdot Island, then up through the Narrows and around Shag Rock. From there, we looped through Horseshoe Bend past the Soda Baths, through Soda and Dorn Bays to the State Park 14

where we turned West and headed on up to Lakeport passing through Corinthian Bay in route. Jerry & Kate Turney s 1942 Chris Craft Barrelback Razzmatazz followed at the end and described it as, one long conga line of beautiful classic boats stretched out for miles. Upon arriving in Lakeport, we were greeted to music playing from the gazebo in the park. The local chapter of Sea Scouts assisted us from our boats and helped end tie them with their sterns towards the docks. It made a beautiful sight to see them all tied so nicely. A first class lunch was served by Lake View Market of Lucerne; Hillside Honda coordinated the Sea Scouts, provided special mooring lines, and sponsored the People s Choice Award. The Chamber of Commerce and Downtown M e r c h a n t s A s s o c i a t i o n coordinated all of the activities in Lakeport. At the conclusion of the show, boats departed for various d e s t i n a t i o n s i n c l u d i n g w i n e r i e s, resorts, and just cruising around. 15 continued on page 22
