Having enjoyed a well-earned break after the end of the season, race-weary riders will start returning to a structured training program in December in order to lay the foundation for next season s results. Suffering is part of the point. This is the time to toughen up. There are 44 brand-new products in the Castelli Fall/Winter 2017 collection. 4 THE FASTEST PARTNERSHIP IN THE PRO PELOTON Already much of the Castelli range consists of products that we ve engineered for the highest levels of pro racing. And those products in the collection that are not made for WorldTour racing are still heavily influenced by the feedback and knowledge we acquire from working with the pros. In the past decade the greatest performance gains in cycling have come from clothing. And we believe that the biggest opportunities are still to be found in clothing whether that s additional improvements in aerodynamics or completely new product categories like the Gabba, which changed the way the pro peloton dresses for racing in cold and wet conditions. The partnership with Team Sky came about because both organizations feel a driving need to continuously innovate. Team Sky wants to have the best and fastest equipment for their riders, and Castelli shares that goal and wants to then bring those products to every cyclist. Team Sky principal Sir Dave Brailsford says it well: They will be more than a kit supplier; they will be an innovation partner. Castelli has a long history of breaking new ground when it comes to kit and design. We will continue to push hard to make sure our riders have the best clothing and equipment, and we re already excited about some of the ideas Castelli are working on with us. We kept hearing so many people refer to the long-sleeve version of the Gabba as perfect, so we ve renamed it the Perfetto Long Sleeve and set about improving on perfection. We ve improved the waterrepellent finish so it will keep you drier without affecting breathability. We ve refined the fit. We ve laser cut the drain holes in the pockets. This is the third generation of the garment that launched an entirely new category, what some magazines are trying to call the rain jersey but the pros just call the Gabba. We ve slightly tweaked the fit and improved the drop tail and pockets, but otherwise we ve kept with the winning formula of warmth, breathability and water repellency. So we started from the Gabba and made the back in Nano Light Pro fabric the same fabric as our Nano Flex tights but without the brushed fleece inside. This gives the jacket a lot of breathability and keeps you from overheating inside. We further lightened it up by using a lighter weight of Gore Windstopper (a full 25% lighter than the one used on the Gabba) on the front. It can cover most of the conditions of the Gabba (except wet racing and very cold), yet it handles warmer temperatures better. And the fit is exceptional, which is one more reason you ll keep reaching for it. Meaning Perfect in Italian, we ve engineered every detail to make it just right. We made the front a little bit thicker to make sure it s warm enough. And of course we made it windproof on the front but with the high breathability Gore Windstopper on the front and freebreathing Nano Flex Light on the back, you ll avoid overheating. But if the weather warms up we made it compact enough to easily fit in half a pocket. Both the front and the back are highly water resistant so they ll keep you mostly dry if you get caught in a bit of rain. 11 VIVIANI: A GOLDEN WINTER Since first placing it around his neck in Rio, Elia Viviani has not wanted to take off the gold medal he won last summer in the Brazilian velodrome. Not being able to take the medal with him while riding, he has decided to add a golden touch to many of the things he uses daily from helmet to shoes to glasses, and even the earphone cord for listening to music during solo training sessions. I really pursued this gold, and the fact that I achieved my most important goal changes everything, says the 27-year-old sprinter born in Isola della Scala in the Veneto region, who is the reigning Olympic champion in the omnium event on the track. From an athletic perspective, you understand that you really can attain the greatest results, and you re not afraid to aim higher and higher, and it s also nice to be stopped on the street and recognized for that medal. When he s not at training camps around the world with his Team Sky teammates, Viviani enjoys riding on his home roads: My training ride always begins the same way, with the Torricelle area of Verona, which I always include, and then the options branch out from there toward Lake Garda, for example, if I need to do a long ride, or Valpolicella, if I want to stay closer in. In the winter I usually do long rides of four or five hours, but never at too hard of a pace with a small group, and often with my girlfriend, Elena Cecchini (Italian road champion for the last three year in a row). But when I need to do a specific workout I ride alone, with my music to provide the rhythm and keep me company. Viviani was already very familiar with Castelli products, thanks to the Italian national team, and he took the blue jersey with the red and white scorpion to the top step of the Olympic podium in Brazil. Beginning in 2017, Castelli will be with him throughout the entire season as the technical partner of Team Sky. In the winter I prefer to dress a bit warmer rather than suffer from the cold, he says, since today s advanced technologies mean you re not likely to sweat too much like you did in the past. I always choose the heaviest base layer, like the Flanders Warm, with a Perfetto Long-Sleeve or Alpha Jersey over it, and I always keep a jacket in my pocket for the descents or in case of rain, so I don t get cold. Then I wear the Estremo or Scalda gloves, and wool socks on my feet, along with toecovers or Narcisista shoecovers. Plus always a neckwarmer and a thermal cap. And I can t forget hot tea in my water bottle. Elia has no doubts about his favorite piece of winter clothing in the collection: The Sanremo Thermosuit. I didn t choose the name at random, because Milan San Remo is my big goal for 2017, maybe along with some stages in the 100th Giro d Italia. 15 TRYING TO MAKE THE WEATHER FORECAST OBSOLETE From the beginning, cycling clothing was separated into two categories: dry-weather clothing that would quickly soak through in the rain, and rainwear that kept the rain off but was so baggy and uncomfortable that you d never dream of wearing it in dry conditions. You had to correctly guess the weather for the day or else suffer in the wrong clothing. We ve all come home absolutely frozen to the bone because we didn t think it would rain. Castelli is out to fix this problem. With Rain or Shine, our goal is to make garments that are absolutely best in class for dry-weather riding but that will keep you dry if it starts to rain. We re developing new fabrics that are both more breathable and better at water protection, and we re inventing intelligent design details that keep the water out yet provide ample breathability and ventilation. Considering that most of these garments will still be used 90 percent of the time in dry conditions, we re not compromising on comfort or breathability. If you wear these only on dry days you ll still have the best Castelli product available plus the peace of mind that if you do get caught in the rain, you ll be covered. When we talk about rain protection, though, we re concentrating on functional rainproofing to keep you warm and comfortable. We avoid obsessively overbuilt construction that compromises dry-weather performance. To achieve the best overall performance we don t unnecessarily tape every single seam and we don t use waterproof membranes where they re not needed. We didn t make it aero, so it s not going to help you win the club training rides in January. What we did is include every creature comfort to help you get in as much training as you can stand over the winter. It s cut a little looser than our race pieces. That s why we re trying to bring very high levels of reflectivity to garments that you want to wear all the time. If you re more likely to be wearing it, then you re more likely to get the protection it can provide. Functionally, this jacket is similar in warmth to our Espresso or Senza jackets but with the added bonus of large perforated retroreflective panels. 20 TRANSITION JACKET CLIMATE CHANGE Winters are getting warmer, and this jacket means you ll be ready. It s our lightest-weight winter jacket, and we ve replaced the fleece lining found on most of our winter jackets with a lightly brushed jersey that helps wick moisture away. This jacket provides very little insulation, but with the full Gore Windstopper front and sleeve front you ll be able to layer it to cover most conditions. 22 CHRISTIAN KNEES: SUPER- DOMESTIQUE AND UNSUNG HERO With 13 grand tours under his belt, Christian Knees is one of Team Sky s strongest domestiques. His tireless work has contributed to 14 race victories, including, most notably, the yellow jersey won by Brad Wiggins in the 2012 Tour de France, Christian s seventh consecutive Tour. His personal palmarès includes victory in the German national road race championship in 2 before joining Team Sky. When Christian was a young cyclist watching pro races on television, he was intrigued by the sacrifice of the domestiques and their selfless devotion to their team leader. They d give up wheels when key riders punctured, collect food and bottles from the team car for teammates, chase down early attacks and keep breakaways in check, ensure that the riders they were looking after were well positioned heading into key sections of races, and provide shelter for them to make sure they conserved their energy for as long as possible. In other sports, it s rare to see athletes completely sacrificing themselves like this to help another athlete win.. OFF-SEASON During the off-season, Christian enjoys spending time at home with his wife and two daughters near Cologne, Germany. With today s long race calendar, professional cyclists have only a few weeks a year to enjoy quiet moments with their families and put in some stressfree training kilometers alone or with friends. The typical winter day in Cologne can be anywhere from +8 C to -15 C, but the beautiful scenery with rolling hills and the quiet, misty roads with hardly another soul in sight help motivate Christian to get in that allimportant base work before heading to the first training camp of the new season. When we meet with Christian at his home during the Castelli catalog photo shoot, he explains to us that riding in this area makes him strong; though the climbs are short, he can easily rack up 2,000 meters of elevation gain in a 100-kilmeter ride. As he points out, the winter road cycling here is amazing if you re prepared and have the right kit. THE ULTIMATE SHORT FOR COLD AND WET This short is just a few centimeters longer, finishing just above the knee, but you ll be amazed at how much warmer it feels. This required engineering a raw-cut edge, tapered just right for extra coverage in the front while being shorter on the back so it doesn t bunch behind the knee. We ve used Nano Flex fabric for a warm brushed fleece on the inside with a nanotechnology water-repellent surface treatment that makes much of the rain run off the fabric, and when it does eventually wet out it manages to keep you warmer. We round out the short with the Progetto X 2 Air seat pad, which confirms that this product is meant for pro duty. PRO INNOVATION We first saw this back in 2009 when our Cervélo TestTeam rider Jeremy Hunt rode the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad in knee warmers that he had cut to knee length. It took six years for it to catch on, but we saw half a dozen or so riders starting the 2015 Omloop with that same look. So we engineered a fabric that lets us leave a soft raw edge at the back of the knee that won t cut into you, and we started riding prototypes.
