Point Leo Surf Lifesaving Junior Surf Lifesaving Program Handbook Season

WELCOME TO THE SEASON The Junior Surf Lifesaving Program (JSLP) or Nippers was developed to equip children with the skills and knowledge to recognise and enjoy a safe beach or aquatic environment. The program is activity based and aims to provide a safe environment where children can have fun and meet new friends whilst developing a range of skills and accomplishing personal challenges. Specifically, the program: extends participant s knowledge and understanding of: o safe beach and aquatic environments o survival skills in aquatic environments Develops skills in: negotiating open water environments by wading, swimming, body surfing and board paddling competition disciplines of Surf Lifesaving called Surf Sports injury prevention to self and others practice of safety related judgements basic first-aid, resuscitation and rescue techniques Point Leo SLSC is a friendly, family club. We hope that all members adopt the Point Leo Spirit and remember that our Nippers should have FUN!! Key People: 2

Junior Coordinator: Age Managers Coordinator: Competition Team Manager: Richard Hoskins Sarah Jo Mason TBA Junior Preliminary Evaluation All Nippers are required to demonstrate competency in a swim and float prior to participating in any water activities. The swim length varies according to the age group and will be assessed at the initial JSLP sessions for Nippers aged U8 to U13. Full details are listed in the Junior Evaluation and Surf Education Requirements (issued by Lifesaving Victoria) and a summary appears towards the end of this Handbook. This assessment ensures that the Nippers are safe to participate in the water activities provided for their age group. Nippers who are unable to demonstrate the required preliminary skills will require one-on-one supervision and support from qualified club lifesavers during water activities, which may not always be available. It is important that all Nippers are swimming regularly in the months before Nippers sessions start. The Nippers program is not designed to teach children how to swim (as distinct from learning surf and open water swimming skills). Junior Competition Skills Evaluation Nippers wishing to compete in Surf Sports Competitions / Carnivals are required to have completed the Junior Competition Skills Evaluation for their age group. Information on the age group requirements is detailed in the Junior Evaluation and Surf Education Requirements sheet (issued by Lifesaving Victoria). Nippers are only permitted to compete after their Junior Competition Skills Evaluation has been successfully completed. Junior Competition Skills Evaluation for all (not just competitors) Nippers aged U9s to U13s will be held at the initial JSLP sessions. Whilst technically only a requirement for those wishing to compete, the club encourages all Nippers to achieve this level of competency as part of their surf lifesaving journey. Junior Life Saving Awards The Junior Life Saving Awards are a compulsory part of the Nipper program and provide education and skill development in the following areas: Personal safety Sun safety Surf conditions and hazards 3

Signs and signals Negotiating surf conditions Overview of general anatomy/the body Correct management and handling of casualties Assessment of emergency situations (DRACBD) Resuscitation techniques Calling for Help Nippers wishing to compete at the State Championships in March must have completed the relevant Life Saving Award prior to the carnival entry closing date. Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC) The Surf Rescue Certificate is offered to those juniors who have turned 13 years of age on the date of the assessment and is compulsory for the under 14 age group to be eligible to compete at the State Championship. The cost is $190 including resuscitation face mask and training manual. The course is run over a weekend camp (9 and 10 December 2017), including the exam. A candidate Must be a minimum age of 13 years old on the date of assessment Must complete a 100m run, 100m swim, 100m run within 5 minutes Must have completed a 200m swim in 5 minutes or less, in a swimming pool or over a measured open water course before any training starts in the surf Units to be covered Safety and Wellbeing Surf Awareness and Skills Anatomy and Physiology Basic First Aid Basic Resuscitation Communications Rescue Techniques Patrols The Junior Surf Lifesaving Program (JSLP) The JSLP program is organised in age groups according to the nipper s age as at 30 September For example, a Nipper who is aged 8 on 30 September will be grouped in the under 9 s. The JSLP runs over 2 time sessions for each program day. 4

CUBS (Under 7 s, 8 s, 9 s, and 10 s) - sessions operate from 8.30am to 10.30am. Each age group will have 2 surf education rotations over the course of the program that will run from to 11.30am. LIONS (Under 11 s, 12 s, 13 s, and 14 s) - sessions operate from to 12.30pm. Each age group will have 2 surf education rotations over the course of the program that will run from 9.00 to 10.20am A briefing is held every morning in the clubhouse before beach warm-up activities commence. This is important for parents and Nippers as key information is provided and Nipper of the Day awards are handed out for Cub age groups from the previous session. The JSLP consists of 10 sessions, commencing on Wednesday 27 December A program calendar is attached at the end of this Handbook. Juniors must wear the club orange cap and a high visibility fluoro rash vest or singlet in all training sessions. New members can purchase caps and singlets from the Uniform shop. The Uniform shop will be open several times before the start of the season. Dates will be advertised in club s. If you are unable to get to the club prior to the season commencing the Uniform shop will be open before the commencement of the first JSLP session on 27/12/2017 (8am for Cubs and 10am for Lions) for the purchase of caps and singlets only. Other items will be available for purchase at the conclusion of the first nipper sessions and on any other session days. Each age group will have an Age Group Manager and one or two Assistants who will work with the group at each activity station throughout the program. These are the first people to go to if you have any queries about the program or need to inform someone of information related to your child s wellbeing. A roll is taken at the start and end of each session by the Age Group Manager. Juniors are not permitted to leave the beach during the session unless accompanied by a parent/guardian and only after notifying the Age Group Manager. Parents must notify Age Group Managers if they are removing their child from the group before the scheduled finish time. It is the responsibility of parents to ensure Nippers are Sun Smart and well hydrated while on the beach. It is strongly advisable that Nippers wear a wetsuit to protect against cold conditions for water activities. Nippers are encouraged to carry their own backpack at all sessions with goggles, towel, wetsuit, sunscreen, water and snacks. 5

A sausage sizzle is held at the end of each session. This is a great time to socialise and meet other members of the club. Proceeds of the BBQ are used to fund new equipment for the Nipper Program. Parents are expected to be actively involved in the program. At least one parent (or adult family member) is required to be present at every session attended by your child. This is to assist with the program and to provide support and encouragement to your child. If you have not volunteered for any of the numerous parent/helper roles that are required to run the Nipper program you will be rostered on to help with BBQ, beach set up, water safety (bronze holders only), or competition official duties. Each family will be required to provide assistance in one area of the program. Parents assisting must be financial members of the club and hold a current Working with Children Check with Point Leo SLSC and LSV listed as volunteer organisations. Junior Surf Sports Program (formerly Competition training program) Junior Surf Sports training runs every Tuesday and until the Junior Surf Lifesaving Program starts. It then continues after the Junior Surf Lifesaving Program finishes on Tuesday, 16 January The program is designed for any Nipper who want to improve their skills, have fun, and participate in Junior carnivals. Training is held on s from 10.00am to 12.00pm for all age groups, and continues until the Victorian Surf Lifesaving Championships in March There is also an optional training session on Tuesday at 5:30pm. Nippers interested in the Junior Surf Sports program must ensure they download and use Team App, which provides up-to-date information on training sessions. The 2017 Victorian Junior Surf Life Saving Championships will be held at Warrnambool on Saturday 10 and 11 March 2018 (Labour Day Weekend). The Junior Surf Sports program is open to all Nippers who participate in the Junior Surf Life Saving Program and have paid their competition fees (if participating in Junior carnivals). The key to the program s success is commitment, and all junior competitors are expected to attend all the training sessions after the Junior Surf Life Saving Program ends and compete in the nominated Junior carnivals. Ideally, junior competitors should attend the organised training sessions before Junior Life Saving Program starts see Team App for details. Please note: Surf Life Saving Australia require the compulsory wearing of high visibility vests or 6

singlets by all nippers at all training sessions and pink high visibility vests at all competitions. These are available from the Uniform Shop. Carnivals are about fun and participation, not simply winning or placing. Most Carnivals have individual and team events so there is an opportunity to compete as a team. Participating in individual events and teams at carnivals are a great way for Nippers to build friendships, participate in a team environment, and get more involved in life saving. They are also great fun. There is a cost for carnival entry that is to be paid by 30 November The Carnival entry fee for under 8s is $100 and for U9 -U14 nippers is $135. This covers entry to Cosy Corner, Chelsea, Mordialloc and Lorne as well as the State Titles at Warrnambool. The dates of these carnivals are listed in the attached calendar. JSSP may attend other carnivals throughout the season subject to sufficient interest from Nippers and the availability of Age Managers or Parents to supervise the teams and provide required numbers of officials and water safety. Additional Carnivals will incur a one-off entry fee of $25 per carnival (payable the week prior to the carnival entries closing), and parents will be required to transport all their own Nippers equipment. Keep in contact with the JSSP squad via TEAM APP for further details. Parents Code At Point Leo SLSC, we pride ourselves on having a fair and competitive spirit in an environment of positive encouragement and inclusion. Our foremost priority is to teach children the skills of Surf Lifesaving. Through our JSLP (including the Junior Surf Sports training program and carnivals) we endeavour to engender in our Nippers a sense of belonging and worth. We stress that parents should also adopt this attitude and be supportive of their Nippers. Please: Do not make an unwilling child participate in the activity Children should be involved in sport for their enjoyment, not yours Encourage children to play by the rules Encourage the effort as being as important as the result Work towards improving skills and sportsmanship Do not yell at or abuse a child for making a mistake Recognise and encourage good play or efforts Do not publicly question an official s decision Recognise the efforts of volunteers 7

We encourage Parents to assist their Nippers in setting achievable goals. If their Nipper is feeling any apprehension or has any concerns, please talk to your Age Manager or come and see the Nipper Coordinator for guidance. Parental Involvement and Support we need you! The JSLP relies solely on volunteers and requires around 100 people to run the program. Point Leo SLSC has enjoyed great support from parents in the past and we know that this will continue. Already we have had parents put up their hand for the upcoming season but we still need more help. Please come forward, you don t need any particular skills, just enthusiasm and a willingness to help. There is an opportunity for parents to contribute to the by obtaining a Bronze Medallion to enable you to provide water safety (see below for more details), doing an Age Managers Course or a Junior Officials Course and obtaining IRB Driver or Crew qualifications. Please note that it is LSV policy that all parents joining the club must have a Working with Children Check. This is a simple process and free for volunteers. Please refer to the WWCC Information sheet on the download page of the club website for the correct information to be completed on your application. Bronze Medallion for Parents Each year we offer the Surf Life Saving Bronze Medallion course to parents. This is a great opportunity for you to improve your fitness and develop your understanding of surf and lifesaving skills. You never know when you might need them! The program also ensures that we have a group of parents who are qualified to run water activities each year; however, we never seem to have enough. The time commitment to complete the course is approx. 24 hours and costs $50. The course this year is fully booked. However, if there is sufficient interest we may run another course. Please contact Andrew Gibson (his is below) if you are interested. A candidate Must be a minimum of 15 years of age on the date of examination Must complete a 200m run, 200m swim, 200m run within 8 minutes Must have completed a 400m swim in 9 minutes or less in a swimming pool or measured open water course before training starts in the surf Must be a financial member of the club 8

Units to be covered Safety and Wellbeing Surf Awareness and Skills Anatomy and Physiology First Aid Resuscitation (CPR) Communications Rescue Techniques Carries and Supports Patrol Please contact Andrew Gibson on for further information. Requalification The has finalised the dates to requalify for Bronze and SRC, and IRB Drivers and Crew. Dates are 26 November 2017 (Bronze and SRC) and 26 November 2017 (IRB Drivers and Crew). Junior Carnivals Parental Obligations All parents of junior competitors are expected to take on a helping role at carnivals to ensure the club is able to meet its obligations and the water safety and official s duty load is shared amongst families. Parents who are not already fulfilling age manager / assistant duties will be expected to sign up for water safety (if a Bronze Medallion holder) or officials duties. Those parents who do not hold a Bronze Medallion or Level 0/1 official s qualification will be required to attend a Junior (Level 0) Official s Course which will be conducted at the club during the 2 nd week of the JSLP. Under 13 Development Camp LSV Leadership and Development Pathway aims to develop leadership and life skills and assist clubs with youth retention. The Under 13 Development Camp is designed to assist junior members in the transition from Nippers to Cadets. Camp participants will complete problem solving exercises, face personal challenges, participate in activities that involve trust and teamwork and develop a state-wide network. The U13 Development Camp is scheduled to be held Friday, 16, 18 March 2018 at Phillip Island Adventure Resort, Cowes Victoria. This camp is available to members who are 12 and 13 years of age across the state of Victoria. Participants must be able to attend the entirety of the program. The aim 9
