2015 State Open Champion James Eaves 2014/15 ANNUAL REPORT

PRESIDENTS REPORT This year has been a busy year for me as I continue to familiarise myself with the business of STAS. There are some real challenges for us, but with a proactive board and members we plan to implement key initiatives to ensure continued success. After working closely with our Executive Officer Shayne Clark, I am astonished at the volume of work he manages and he continually goes over and above his designated role to deliver opportunities for STAS members. We are fortunate to have such a positive driver for the organisation. I find myself constantly impressed by the enthusiasm of all surfers at events, especially the juniors. We are keen to increase participation and involvement in our future events. Also the professionalism shown by the board rider clubs in managing events statewide has also been awesome, with everyone keen to contribute to provide successful events. Significantly, STAS received donations from Surfing Western Australia, Victoria and NSW in a package to assist us to through the year following the completion of funding support from Surfing Australia. Our biggest challenge now is to build a sustainable state organisation for the future. There are some real highlights for STAS this year, such as the Surfing Australia events The Original Source Australian Boardriders Battle and WAHU Surf Groms. The event in October 2014 was held at Scamander with the 4 Tassie clubs (NWBR, NEBR, PBBR, SABR) battling out this teams format event for the right to represent Tasmania in the National Final at Cronulla Beach on Australia Day. With over $3500 of prize money up for grabs in this entertaining format, SABR were pushed as all the way by NWBR and NEBR but held on the hold their title for the second year. The WAHU Surf Groms was held at Nth Clifton for the second year and provided a great venue for the young groms, including many interstate competitors chasing the HPC Camp prizes. This is a valuable event for Tassie focusing on a surf comp with beach games and lots of fun for all, but providing our young groms the chance to surf against top groms from interstate. HIF State Championship Series. Our popular HIF Championship Series of events from Bruny Island to Marrawah was again very successful with finalists rewarded with HIF STAS Championship trophies and the opportunity to represent Surfing Tasmania at their national championships. This year our Junior Team was a standout again defeating South Australia at Yalingup WA with some outstanding individual performances. See State Team Report for full details. It was disappointing that we were unable to raise a State Open team with Matt Carr and Karl Gol being our only representatives at Coffs Harbour and is a situation we must improve on for Australian Sports Federation G4G Grant $9000. Surfing Tasmania was extremely fortunate to receive a $9000 grant to conduct a statewide program to encourage teenagers to take up surfing. Surfing Tasmania won this grant from a national allocation. Our proposed program is aimed at inviting surfers who competed in the Tasmanian Schools Surfing Championships to come along to a FREE coaching session at locations around Tasmania. Our boardrider clubs provided coaches and participants were signed up as local BRC members. Overall it was felt the program did not achieve it s full potential.

Sport and Recreation State Sporting Organisation Grant $7500. The annual Sport and Recreation funded Coaching Programs for U/18/21s has again been successful with our Development Squad Clinics proving popular. Our High Performance program was assisted by a visit from one of Surfing Australia s HPC Coaches. We are stoked to now have Open State Champion James Eaves and former World Junior Champion Dara Penfold delivering this coaching program for us in a restructure of coaching operations. Tasmanian Community Fund Grant $4000. Other highlights include our new Equipment Trailer courtesy a $4000 Tasmanian Community Fund Grant. Annual Planning Day State Meeting. Our Annual Planning Day at Campbell Town was a very positive event and highlighted the need for such meetings in the off season where Board and Rep Committee members can raise, discuss and resolve a range of issues as well as plan the year ahead. Supporter Memberships. Key goals for STAS are to build a more sustainable organisation with a range of strategies, the first being a new Supporter Membership Program aimed at developing positive relationships with our surf industry and associated businesses which has just been launched. Check our website for details. We look forward to 2016 and the challenges and opportunities ahead. Marty Viney STAS President SUP STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS-EAGLEHAWK NECK pic L-R, Claire, Cheryl, Ben, Josh, Lewis and Matt.

EXECUTIVE OFFICER REPORT A huge year with a great HIF State Championship Series, great waves and conditions for most events. However, a year that will be remembered for an increase in sharks activity on our popular East Coast. Due to the nature of the risks Surfing Australia and all states now have developed a Shark Mitigation Strategy for all SAUS, states, BRC and Surf School activities. Surfing Tasmania enjoyed a solid year of events and activities with the highlight being the outstanding performance of our State Junior Team at the Surf Dive n Ski National Titles in Yallingup West Australia. Lizzy Stokley finishing 4 th in the U18 Final for the second year. Tasmania's Team Captains Lizzy Stokley and Ned Bramich were announced in the Honorary Australian Junior Team. The Tassie team defeated South Australia in the Teams Event to finish 5 th for the second year. Lizzy Stokley capped of a huge year being awarded the prestigious Isabel Letham Award for Outstanding Achievement and Sportsmanship. Tasmania s five boardrider clubs continue to grow, working closely with STAS to build a sustainable future. Park Beach, Clifton Beach and Devonport based North West Boardriders enjoyed very strong seasons of club activity and growth. Southern Tasmania Bodyboard Club were active conducting a successful club comp series. North East Boardriders worked closely with Surfing Tasmania to present the popular East Coast Open Classic, East Coast Junior Classics and Australian Boardrider Battle Event. All of STAS s major State Championship Series Events are now hosted by their local BRC Tasmanian clubs; a major element of Surfing Tasmania s strategic planning. With the election of Burnie s Marty Viney as President and north east legend Nigel Wallace as a Board member, Surfing Tasmania finally became a fully statewide organisation. This redistribution of power across the three regions has enabled a bigger picture approach to vital strategic issues of membership, funding and sustainability. Surf school operations continued to grow across the three regions and it is pleasing to see Burnie legend James Lyons step in and open another arm to his Sea Lyons Aquatic School with a local surf school operation delivering Weetbix Surf Groms and Learn to Surf Programs. We now have 5 surf school operators around Tasmania offering a range of great programs for our coastal communities. Executive Officer Shayne Clark 2015.

The Tassie team defeated South Australia in the Teams Event to finish 5th...two years in a row!!!!awesome stuff. 18 2015 OPEN STATE TEAM REPORT North West Boardrider Coach Matt Carr and Tassie Level 3 Judge Karl Gol were our only representatives at the 2015 Surfing Australia Surf Festival at Coffs Harbour during August. Matt surfed in the Open and O/35 Divisions with Karl working on the Judges Panel and leading a seminar as part of the official activities around the Festival. To avoid a loss of allocations for 2016 Surfing Tasmania must work hard to encourage more members to consider state team selection in the coming season. Matt commented about his experience on Facebook: Credit to all the competitors, organisers, judges, sponsors and supporters for putting on a fantastic event! Great to see such a high level of skilled surfers using all their competitive edge. Was feeling the culture shock coming from the NW. Got some cracking waves I'll never forget like a 200m leg burner at Crescent. Catch up with old friends and make some new friends along the way. Stoked to have been given the opportunity and support from Surfing Tas PHOTO HIGHLIGHTS.
