2 GOZO COLLEGE SECONDARY SCHOOLS VICTORIA GOZO MALTA Form 2Jl Half Yearly Exam Time: 15 minutes LISTENING COMPREHENSION Teachers' Paper Sport of Kings Falconry is an ancient art that marks a special relationship between man and bird. Nowadays it is considered as an elite sport, however, it started as a hunting practice - it was used to catch food. Indeed the art of falconry is steeped in history and dates back to early civilizations. It also has strong ties to the aristocracy, and was very often part of war and diplomatic relations between nations. It was a means of communication between cultures - a symbol of power and finery recognized across nations and rulers. The exchange of falcons was often part of diplomatic proceedings. In 1530, when the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V handed the Maltese Islands over to the Knights of St John, following their eviction from Rhodes, it was at a price of two Maltese Falcons to be handed over each year. The Maltese Falcon was particularly sought after because it can cover around 900 miles of distance in a day. The relationship between the falcon and the falconer is as enigmatic as it is fascinating. A bond between the bird and the falconer is created over time. One starts to train the bird using food, always rewarding it with food. Each time, the distance between trainer and bird is slowly increased. Once the distance of 50 meters is reached, the bird can be set free to fly, knowing that it will always return to its master.

Read the following passage carefully. 20 marks ( You are going to read a true story about a courageous surfer. It was a beautiful Hawaiian morning on the island of Kauai, October 31, Thirteen-year-old Bethany Hamilton had no idea of the frightening monster that awaited her that Halloween morning. Page 20f 10

5 Bethany, her best friend, Alana, and 'her friend's father and brother headed to Makua Beach for some morning surfing. Bethany's own father was not with them, as he was scheduled to have knee surgery at the local hospital. As Bethany approached, she saw several other surfers already catching waves on the crystal blue water. Avid surfers, the friends wasted no time getting started. Ranked eighth in the world, Bethany surfed with the confidence and agility of the champion that she was. After ten or eleven runs, Bethany was resting on her board, waiting for the right wave. Relaxed, she dangled her left arm over the board into the crystal clear water. Without waming, the grey beast attacked, clamping its teeth into her left amn and board and thrashing, trying to pull her under and pull her apart. Bethany held onto her board with her right arm and refused to be pulled under. As quickly as it had come, the enormous creature was gone, but not before it had bitten off her arm just below the shoulder. No one had seen the grisly attack. Bethany pulled herself onto her board and started paddling back to shore with her right arm. Somehow, she managed to reach the shore, where she went into shock. As horrified beachgoers looked on, Alana's father stopped the bleeding with a surf leash, and Bethany was rushed to the hospital. At the hospital, her father was told that they had to postpone performing his surgery. A 14-foot tiger shark had attacked a surfer. Her father tumed white as a ghost and fearfully asked if the surfer was his daughter. The doctor began to cry and confirmed her father's fears. The doctor explained that the situation was grim, Bethany had lost 70% of her blood. They didn't know if she would survive. As a top level athlete, however, Bethany was in excellent physical condition, and she not only survived, but also recovered remarkably quickly. Others would have given up surfing for good, but not Bethany. On Thanksgiving Day, less than a month after the sha rk attack, she was back on a board. In early January, just ten weeks after losing her arm, Bethany competed again and placed fifth in her age group. Since the attack, Bethany has appeared on a number of talk shows and has written a book about her misfortune and comeback. She now has her own line of jewellery and perfume. As if to prove that she can do anyting now that she could do before, she has even learned to snowboard. Bethany serves as an inspiration to others who have physical disabilities and people believe she may be world champion -someday. Page 30f 10
