1 February 2015 From the Wheelhouse Cdr Dan Fortman, P Greetings Everyone: Our calendars have been flipped and we are deep into planning for a great 2015 boating season. With our eye on education and safety, our commitment continues to help all members and their families have an enjoyable and safe season. Throughout this month s Yachtsman, you will find a great deal of information regarding upcoming activities. The next event coming up is the annual District 7 Spring Conference. This year it will be hosted by the Rocky River Squadron and held in Cleveland on March 20 through 22. We will be sponsoring a hospitality room and once again will share this cost and time commitment with the Berea Squadron. Volunteers for the room are always appreciated as are donations of chocolates and basket items. Our Annual Meeting is scheduled for March 28th and will be held again this year at The Pump House Ministries in Ashland. Please mark your calendars for this as we will be voting on approval of our new Bylaws. Our Change of Watch is scheduled for April 25 th and will be held at the Cabin again this year. We will hold our annual Education Awards dinner in May and will give the details on the where it will be held and the date at a later time. Speaking of the District 7 activities, it was announced that the annual district rendezvous will once again be held near the end of July at Middle Bass Island. This was great fun in past years and this year should be no exception. You should plan on it. Our MPS rendezvous schedule is being formed and announcements as to location and dates will be forthcoming as they are available. Also, as a reminder, the Mansfield Power Squadron will be hosting the District 7 Fall Conference this year. We have once again chosen Kalahari as our site and there have been several preliminary meetings held already in our efforts to stay ahead of this event. This is a huge undertaking and we will need (Continued on page 7 ) Mark Your Calendar February 9 Kalahari Planning Meeting 10 Membership/Executive Meeting March 10 Membership/Executive Meeting D/7 Conference 28 Annual Meeting April Membership/Executive Meeting Change of Watch May 12 TBA Membership/Executive Meeting Education Awards

Winter when Ohioans switch from water skiing to snow skiing, from fly fishing to ice fishing, from cruising to dreaming. Some of our members are spending a few of those long dark nights in Seamanship with Dennis Figley. A dozen prospective members are exploring options in Public Boating Class at Madison under the experienced eye of Chan Stevens. If you are in the dreaming category, and you have neither the time nor the interest in taking a formal class, we encourage you to haul out your old text books for review. Explore your charts for new destinations. Play around with 60D ST and TVMDC. Prepare your engine maintenance and electronics systems lists. Check out the on-line seminars and courses on the USPS Web Page. Turn these long dreary evenings into something more enjoyable and profitable. The snow will melt. The water will flow. And we ll be boating again soon. Till then It s winter in Ohio. Maynard Hopkins We were deeply saddened to hear Maynard Hopkins, N had passed on February 5, He was our last surviving charter member who is still a member of our squadron. Maynard was a Life Member with 25 Merit Marks. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Maynard s family and friends. FYI We will be voting on the revised Bylaws at the Annual Meeting on Saturday, March 28, If you need a copy of the Bylaws with these changes, please contact Commander Dan Fortman, and he will mail you a copy in advance. All submissions for the Yachtsman are due by midnight of the second Tuesday of the month. All members of the Mansfield Power Squadron are encouraged to submit articles, recipes, photos, jokes, or any other interesting tidbit of information from the boating world. submissions to: 2 TheMPSYachtsman@aol.com

4 From the Safety Office Cdr Dan Fortman, P From the Administrative Office Lt/C Lynn Fortman, P COLD WEATHER BOATING Don t let the cold weather keep you from boating. You just need to be prepared. Know the dangers of cold water boating and take the appropriate precautions. You can comfortably and safely enjoy boating all 12 months of the year. Often the best fishing and boating opportunities exist when cooler weather and cold water increases the risks associated with getting wet. The following advice will increase your odds of survival should you capsize or encounter bad weather. Cold Shock is a dangerous, sometimes fatal, condition that can result when a person is suddenly immersed in cold water, such as would occur in a capsize. The sudden exposure of the head and chest to cold water typically causes an involuntary gasp for air, sudden increases in heart rate and blood pressure, disorientation and can possibly cause cardiac arrest. Hypothermia is a dangerous and often-fatal condition that results when exposure to cold temperatures causes the body to no longer be able to maintain temperature in the core region (heart, lungs, etc.). While this condition can occur through exposure to cold air alone, its onset is much faster when the body is wet or immersed in water. 4 To reduce the exposure to these conditions: Dress in layers using synthetic fabrics such as polyester fleece to prevent getting overheated or chilled from perspiration. Carry a waterproof jacket for rain protection. Any time the water temperature is less than 60 degrees Fahrenheit, wear specialized insulating clothing capable of protecting you while in the water. Wear a warm hat that will stay on your head in the water. A fleece-lined skullcap is ideal. Have spare dry clothing and store in a sealed dry bag while on the water and, if wet, change into dry clothing at first signs of shivering. Always wear your lifejacket (PFD). Keep your body well fueled with high carbohydrate foods and lots of water. In the event of a capsize in cold water: Get out of the water and dry off as quickly as possible. Once out of the water, put on dry clothes immediately. If you are unable to exit the water quickly, keep calm, remain with your boat, conserve energy and get in the H.E.L.P. (heat escape lessening posture) position fold your arms against your chest, cross legs, and keep still until help arrives. (Continued on page 5) District 7 Spring Conference Registration is underway with hotel reservations due by February 27 and food/ conference registration due by March 16. If you are planning to attend, our hospitality room will be shared with Berea Power Squadron. Since the theme is District 7 Rocks our room will reflect the interior of Mandolay Bay in Las Vegas. This particular casino has a shark tank within its interior and we will be attempting to recreate this environment within our hospitality room. Members should plan to wear casino worker attire- black pants, white shirts, bow ties, arm garters. For those of you who don t have an arm garter in your clothing arsenal, I will order arm garters for you if you could let me know by March 1. Our food contribution to the room will again be CHOCOLATES. These delicious confections can be dropped off at Fort s on Park Avenue East anytime after March 16. A budget planning session was held prior to our meeting on Tuesday evening, February 10 during which time bridge members discussed ways to most effectively utilize the money that was raised from our clambake proceeds to help promote our mission of safe boating through education. The brainstorming session produced varied options that you will be learning more about in the coming months. Stay tuned. Our Annual Meeting that will be held on Saturday, March 28 at The Pump House Ministries, 400 Orange Street, Ashland. Our meal will be served family style with three salad choices, bread and butter, coffee/tea/lemonade, macaroni and cheese, vegetable/potato du jour, buttermilk chicken, roast sirloin of beef and rainbow sherbet. If you are interested, you may bring your own wine or beer for cocktail hour since The Pump House does not serve alcohol. Cocktail hour will begin at 5:00. The cost, including tax and gratuity, is $19.00 per person. Reservations will be accepted until Thursday, March 19. Checks should be made payable to Mansfield Power Squadron. Please send your check to Lynn Fortman, 19 East Gaylord Ave., Shelby, Ohio, by March 19. This year the Change of Watch is scheduled for Saturday, April 25 at The Cabin Restaurant. Cocktails will begin at 6:00. You will receive more information next month. KALAHARI PLANNING UPDATE Planning for the Fall D/7 Conference went well with many great suggestions for entertainment during the ice breaker on Friday evening. The Kalahari Resort was a perfect mix of family, fun and boating during our last hosted event in Remember that for the cost of a room which sleeps four, there are four water park passes included at NO ADDITIONAL COST! We now have two members who have volunteered to manage two of our fundraising efforts at this event, the Ship s Store and our 50/50 raffle. Thank you Julio Bueno and Bob Pompei for your support! Butch and Phyliss Rothschild are currently investigating ideas for ice breaker entertainment on Friday night. Member support of squadron activities at the district level is appreciated!

5 From Safety Office Continued... If two or more people are in the water, get into the Huddle posture put your arms around one another, stay close together, and keep still. Only attempt to swim to shore if 1) there is little or no chance of rescue 2) you are in danger of floating into dangerous hazards, 3) you are absolutely certain you can make it. Note: Any decision to swim for shore should not be entered into lightly. Physical activity such as swimming, or other struggling in the water increases heat loss. Survival time can be reduced to minutes. Strong swimmers have died before swimming 100 yards in cold water. In water under 40 degrees, victims have died before swimming 100 feet. Also keep in mind that judging distance accurately on the water is difficult. The most typical symptoms of hypothermia are listed below in the general order of onset. Shivering Impaired judgment Clumsiness Loss of manual dexterity Slurred speech Inward behavior, withdrawal Shivering stops Muscle rigidity Unconsciousness For mild hypothermia (victim shivering but coherent): Move victim to place of warmth. Remove wet clothes, give warm sweet drinks; no alcohol or caffeine. Keep victim warm for several hours. Moderate Hypothermia (shivering may decrease or stop): Victim may seem irrational with deteriorating coordination. Same as above but no drinks. Victim should be kept lying down with torso, thighs, head and neck covered with dry clothes, coats or blankets to stop further heat loss. Seek medical attention immediately. Severe hypothermia (shivering may have stopped): Victim may resist help or be semiconscious or unconscious. Removed from water, victim must be kept prone, on back and immobile. Victim must be handled gently. Cover torso, thighs, head and neck with dry covers to stop further heat loss. Arms and legs must not be stimulated in any manner. Cold blood in extremities that suddenly returns to the core may induce cardiac arrest. Seek medical attention immediately. Victim appears dead (little or no breathing or pulse, body rigid): Assume victim can still be revived. Look for faint pulse or breathing for 2 minutes. If any trace is found, do not give CPR. It can cause cardiac arrest. Medical help is imperative. If pulse or breathing are totally absent, trained medical personnel should start CPR. 7 From The Wheelhouse Continued... every available squadron member to do what they can to help with this. Please do not hesitate to volunteer your time and talents to this. You can call Lynn Fortman with any questions or thoughts. There was a special meeting held to discuss and generate ideas for your budget for this year. As a squadron, we are now in the position to advertise and promote education and safe boating in a more focused manner. Many great ideas were generated and you should see positive results from this in the coming months. There are many area boaters that do not know us or our mission and our goal is to overcome this and become more visible to the general public. I listed many of the upcoming events for this year in my notes above to you. Check these events out and make reservations in a timely manner. Share your ideas and enthusiasm. We need you. If you have any questions about the squadron or activities or need help getting in touch with the right people in the squadron, call me. Let s do this together!
