1 Dear Lifesaving Bronze Applicant, This information pack has been collated to provide you with information regarding the camp itself as well as details about conditions of admission and prices. Information regarding the application process has also been included. This season s Bronze Camp will be held during the week of: Sunday 16 th December 2012 Saturday 22 nd December 2012 There will be a strict maximum of 60 candidates accepted to take part in this camp, and so I strongly urge you to register as soon as possible to avoid any disappointment. Please note that registering does NOT guarantee you a place in the camp as the club conducts a selection process of all applications received before confirming the successful candidates. The Lifesaving Bronze is the basic qualification for any Surf Lifesaver and is considered essential for a lifetime in lifesaving. Accompanying the award is some responsibility. As an active member, Bronze Medallion holders are required to patrol the Surf Beach at Point Lonsdale as a part of a roster system, which will be organised at the conclusion of the camp. CONDITIONS OF ADMISSION INTO CAMP The camp will be both physically and mentally taxing, there are also strict guidelines that must be followed; therefore the following pre-requisites must be adhered to. You must

2 Be a minimum of 15 years of age at the date of the assessment Be a financial member of Point Lonsdale SLSC Be able to complete a 400 Metre swim in 9 minutes or less Be prepared to patrol the Surf Beach at Point Lonsdale as an active member By enrolling in this camp you agree to take part in every activity that is involved in the program. If a candidate does not participate at an appropriate level as deemed by the instructors, they may be asked to withdraw themselves from the program. MANDATORY SWIM TEST The club will conduct the 400m-swim test on the first day of the camp. This session is compulsory for all candidates, regardless of whether the candidate has completed a similar swim test before the club s instructors must still conduct the test. We do ask if parents could please make themselves available to give lifts to and from the pool. We will leave for the Ocean Grove Pool immediately after the welcome session (approx 10am). Parents are welcome to stay and watch this session. APPLICATION PROCESS The application process has been developed to ensure that each applicant is given equal opportunity of gaining admission into the camp as well as making it as effective and stress-free as possible for the clubs administrators. The process is as follows: 1. The applicant must comply with ALL of the above conditions of admission.

3 2. Complete the online application form located on the clubs website. 3. A panel of the clubs members will review each of the applications individually. 4. The panel will then select a maximum of 60 successful candidates according to set criteria. 5. The club will inform the applicants if they have been successful or not via letter. 6. Successful candidates will be instructed to fill out enrolment forms, medical forms and give payment details and return to the club immediately. 7. The club will acknowledge that the forms and payment details have been received. The selected panel of instructors and committee members review each of the applications with strong regard to the following criteria: Any existing family history or involvement with club. Intention to become an active patrolling member at Point Lonsdale SLSC. Intention to compete on behalf of Point Lonsdale SLSC. Intention to complete all of the activities within the program. Please note that all applications must follow the above process to ensure a fair and reasonable opportunity for all applicants. 4 COST BREAKDOWN ITEM DESCRIPTION PRICE Training Resources Manual & Workbook. $40 Lifesaving Cap Double sided patrol and Club colours. $20 Breakfast/Lunch Both hot & cold, provided daily. Including drinks and fruit. $50 Pizza/Trivia Night One night during the camp will be a pizza/video or trivia night. $20 Official Camp T-Shirt To be worn during the camp and to the final assessment. $30 Administration Fee To assist the club in the running of the camp. $100 Patrolling Bond Will be returned once the member has completed sufficient patrolling hours as deemed by the Club Captain. $200 TOTAL $460

5 REQUIRED EQUIPMENT It is expected that each candidate will have the following equipment for the entire duration of the camp: Bathers suitable for swimming (Navy or Black preferably) Running Gear (Runners, shorts, etc) Towels (At least 2) Sun Protection (Sunglasses, hat, SPF 15+ sunscreen) Wet Weather Gear (Jumpers, tracksuit pants etc) Water Bottle (strongly recommended) Pens and Pencils Full-Bodied Wetsuit (strongly recommended) A small amount of money for emergencies CAMP RULES All candidates of the camp must adhere to the following rules, should these rules not be adhered to it may result in the candidate being removed from the program immediately: 1. For safety reasons you MUST obey all instructions from your instructors at all times. 2. Candidates must attend ALL training sessions to be eligible for examination. 3. Strictly NO Alcohol. 4. Strictly NO Smoking. 5. Candidates MUST remain WITH THE INSTRUCTORS and the group at ALL times. 6. All candidates MUST obey the rules and regulations set out by both Point Lonsdale SLSC and Life Saving Australia.

6 SCHEDULE Every day of the camp will consist of four elements of training: Physical Training Surf Skills Rescue methods and Techniques Lifesaving Theory Generally days will start at 7:00 am with a run, followed by a surf swim. Breakfast will then be supplied at the clubhouse, followed by dry theory sessions. Morning tea and Lunch will also be provided before the afternoon practical sessions, typically finishing at 5pm. The evenings are a time for candidates to relax and socialise in preparation for the following day, unless an evening theory session is planned. Obviously, our schedule is highly weather dependant, so changes may be necessary. On one of the nights during the camp we will hold a pizza and trivia night for all the participants. This is a compulsory part of the program. This night will conclude at approx. 10:30pm. Instructors over the age of 18 will be present to supervise.

7 FIRST DAY OF CAMP On the first day of the camp, the day will start with a sign in at 9am and an introduction at 9:30am. Parents are encouraged to attend. This important information session will include a formal club welcome, an introduction to lifesaving, and more importantly lifesaving at Point Lonsdale. At this session, candidates will collect the following items: Caps Workbooks Manuals T-Shirts Timetable The Bronze Camp week is one that will be treasured by each and every candidate, it provides a great opportunity to foster new relationships whilst also allowing candidates to develop skills and knowledge to not only become effective Surf Lifesavers but also give good grounding for both their professional and personal lives. The Point Lonsdale Surf Lifesaving Club prides itself on its community and its members. The clubs proud history has developed over time and is renowned for its warm social environment. The clubs core responsibility to is to provide effective lifesaving operations and promote a safe beach environment for the Point Lonsdale community and so by completing your Bronze Medallion at Point Lonsdale you agree to take on this responsibility.
