1 !!Newsletter w/c 6 October 2014! FRIDAY DRINKS are on this FRIDAY. ALL WELCOME, Bar Opens 5pm. MEMBER REGISTRATION IS NOW DUE. PLEASE COMPLETE YOUR FORMS ASAP AND RETURN THEM TO THE OFFICE WITH PAYMENT. THANK YOU U14 s and U15 s 2014/2015 SEASON There is a meeting for all this year s U15 s and those U14 s who completed their SRC last season, this coming Sunday, October 12 th at 10am, in the Clubhouse to discuss pathways after the SRC, as well as the activities and what you want from your club this season. Parents are invited and their contribution welcomed. Liz Osborne and Rob Macnamara lizosborne@optusnet.com.au RESCUE 2015 WORLD TITLES.. Welcome Home to all Travellers. Here are some reports on our triumphs. MASTERS SWIM BOARD AND SKI SECTION A small contingent of the Masters Swim Board and Ski section Daz Jones, Tim Hayes, Ian Poole, Peter Dean, Kevin Harris and Ed Kwanten travelled to and competed at the World Surf Lifesaving Championships held at La Grande Motte outside of the French town of Montpellier in September 2014.

2 The organization of the water area left much to be desired including: lack of sufficient craft for competitors; inefficient system for hiring and returning craft; changing venue of team meeting without adequate notice; inflexible application of the competition rules (eg running heats when could have run a straight final; very slow running of events, particularly on day one when many events had to be carried over to day two due to lack of time. The surf conditions at La Grande Motte were generally flat, with the exception on day two when there was a two foot plus chop due to gale force on-shore winds. The water temperature was however a pleasant 23 degrees and the water was very salty. There was a bank that extended halfway to the turning buoys benefitting competitors with longer legs. Surprisingly, most of the top competitors from surf clubs in Australia were in attendance making for strong competition. Day one of the competition was overcast with strong offshore winds that were very cold. The surf was flat. We were not able to hire craft as, despite lining up to hire craft for over 50 minutes, all were allocated. Avalon, Freshwater, Dee Why and Manly however, were very generous in loaning us craft for our events. Results of day one, which was for individual events as well as Board Rescue, included: The first medal of the day to our contingent, a SILVER, was won by Daz Jones after finishing second in the 45-49yrs Surf race after a great swim and leading most of the way only to be beaten by the man of the carnival, Paul Lemond. Tim Hayes exceeded all expectations by claiming BRONZE, his first ever Worlds medal, in the 45-49yrs Board race. Tim finished 3 rd in his heat and was 7 th in the semi-final before producing another outstanding paddle. Daz Jones, surprised even himself by making the final of that race and finishing a very creditable 9 th. In the 50-54yrs age group, Ian Poole was 2 nd in his heat, then finished 5 th in the semi-final before running out of puff and finishing 7 th in the final. Peter Dean, showed why he is such a good paddler by easily winning his heat in the 55-59yrs age group Board race, then finishing 2 nd in the semi-final where he coasted most of the way, before finishing an unlucky 6 th in the final of the event. The 65-69yrs Board race was a straight final with Kev Harris and Ed Kwanten contesting the event. Because of the long wade and the flat conditions there was a lot of pushing and shoving and getting squeezed. Ed finished 6 th and Kevin 9 th in a hotly contested field. In the only Board Rescue event held Tim Hayes and Daz Jones, in the 45-49yrs age category, finished 3 rd in their heat before finishing 5 th in the final. The two big blokes on the same board struggled to co-ordinate their paddling timing!!! Day two was cold with gale force on-shore winds causing the surf to be very choppy with some two foot plus waves. Results for the day were: In the 150yrs Board Relay event, which was a straight final, Tim Hayes, Daz Jones and Kevin Harris, paddled very well to finish a very creditable 5 th giving away some 16 years to other teams.

3 Ian Poole, Ed Kwanten and Peter Dean in the 170 years Board Relay event, which was also a straight out final, combined to win GOLD. They had previously won the Board Relay event at the World Surf Lifesaving Championships in Lorne in It was also sweet revenge for being narrowly beaten at the Australian Championships in April 2014 in Perth. Daz Jones, Peter Dean and Ed Kwanten made up the team for the 170yrs Oceanman event (Taplin). Both Daz and Peter excelled in the swim and board respectively in the heat and the final, Ed found it very tough going trying to jump on an unfamiliar ski in gale force winds. Once on he had no difficulty negotiating the course. After finishing 5 th in the heat the boys finished 11 th in the final. MASTERS RUNNERS Congratulations to all the competitors at worlds (15 runners). Everybody got a medal at least silver. Best ever result at worlds.
