2 Chairman s Message Welcome to North Narrabeen Nippers 2014/15 Season I would firstly like to welcome all new Nippers and parents, as well as all the returning families to North Narrabeen SLSC. The first few weeks of Nippers is always quite hectic with a lot of new members trying to find their feet and I think everything has settled in pretty well. This is mostly due to the preparation work undertaken by the Junior Activities Committee over the last six months in the lead up to the new season. Just to get to the Registration Days is a milestone for the Committee and they ran as well as I can remember, except for selling out of white caps! I do appreciate that our limited clothing stock has caused some frustration however, please understand our orders are based on the previous season s turnover, and there are limits to what we can afford to purchase and hold in stock. There has been a significant increase in new members and unfortunately we sold out of caps but more are on order and should arrive within the next few weeks, along with black short sleeve rashies and size 8-10 high-vis singlets. The focus over the last two weeks has been on Nipper proficiencies because under the SLS guidelines nippers are not permitted to enter the water until this has been completed. This week we can now start to expand our activities in preparation nd th for our first Points Day on 2 November and JAC Carnival at Newport on 9 November. Proficiency requirements for the Under 6 & 7 s were introduced for the first time this season by Surf Life Saving NSW and we commenced them last weekend. I was helping the Under 6 s and it was a lot of fun. It reminded me of when my kids started 6 years ago trepidation, fear, tears, excitement, exuberating and fun pretty well every emotion was covered last Sunday but the majority we left smiling from ear to ear. If your child is hesitant about entering the water or completing proficiency it s best not to push them, especially at Nippers when they are surrounded by a lot of new faces. Try to get them down to the beach on a Saturday morning or one evening over the summer holidays and let them develop confidence in the surf. You wouldn t just turn up to soccer or a footy game on a Saturday morning without any training, and Nippers is the same. The kids need plenty of time in the water to develop an understanding of the surf, and of course swimming lessons through the week also helps. Finally I would like to thank all the Age Managers and their helpers, especially the parents in the Under 6 & 7 Girls who stepped up to help out. You are an essential part to every Sunday and I hope you develop a great rapport with the kids as I have done over the years. Nippers requires a lot of parent/carer interaction; personally I find this a lot more rewarding than standing on the sideline getting frustrated with the referee! 3 Press Release North Narrabeen Nippers gears up for another successful season supported by new major sponsor Etz North Narrabeen Surf Life Saving Club (NNSLSC) Junior Committee has announced Etz as their new major sponsor for the season in support of its Nipper program. Last season was one of the most successful in recent memory with wins at local and Branch SLS junior carnivals. As the season draws near, the Club is looking to improve on this recent success with the support of new major sponsor, Etz. The funds donated by Nicholas & Susan Woodward of Etz will be put towards new junior paddle boards, competition boards and will enable the Club to continue with a paid professional board coach. Darren Marshall, Junior Chairperson of NNSLSC said, Having the support of not only a local business but also a family who is dedicated and involved in our Club has a positive impact on our nipper program and Club overall. It s this level of generosity that enables the Club to invest in educating our kids on beach awareness and safety. It s a win-win for our community. Susan said, Coming home to the Northern Beaches gives us a wonderful work-life balance and we wanted to give something back. It's important to us that our company, Etz, support the local community so for us, our local Surf Life Saving Club was the obvious choice. North Narrabeen is one of 21 Surf Clubs on Sydney s Northern Beaches. The Club was founded in 1912 and in over 100 years of service to the community no life has ever been lost on North Narrabeen Beach whilst under patrol of NNSLSC members. The Club has a proud history of competition as well as strong links with other sporting & community clubs in the local area. North Narrabeen SLSC does a great job every year in helping keep our beaches safe and Etz hopes that their Nipper program goes from strength to strength with the equipment and training that our sponsorship will help to fund, continued Susan. Send your content to U9 Girls Geoff & Susan With the majority of girls returning from last year & a couple of newbies it was easy to pick up where we finished last season. The girls are all keen, though the water temps are still a bit on the cool side! Everyone to date has completed their proficiencies, so it is full steam ahead. Some of the skills shown will mean that we will have good representation at carnivals this year, with some added speed & determination. We will be getting to the boards when we can but we need to get the surf skills up a bit first. Both Susan & I are really pleased to be managing this great bunch of girls again this year. If any parents have their Bronze Medallion or would like to get it please let me know as this will help out immensely. We also need officials for Carnivals, so please see me to register your interest. See you on the sand! Other News BBQ Update Welcome to our new BBQ co-coordinators - Brenda & Dave. WOW! What a start to our BBQ s for the Season. In the last two weeks we have sold out of everything 10kg of bacon, 10 kg of sausages and 10 doz eggs. We obviously have some hungry little nippers!! All money raised through the BBQ goes to purchasing new equipment for our Club which our nippers benefit from. Thank you to the parents for assisting over the last 2 weeks with the setup, cooking, selling and cleaning up at the end, and thank you in advance to the rest of you who are yet to get your day to assist. BOARD & SWIM TRAINING Any U8-U14 nippers wishing to compete at the upcoming JAC Carnival must notify their respective Age Manager by Sunday 2 November. Held every Thursday at 6pm sharp for U9-U14s who have Sunday 9 November Nippers must have completed the swim proficiency to be eligible for competition. L1 Officials required for U8 & U9. completed their swim proficiency. Meet at the Nipper Board Room (north side of the Clubhouse).
