1 Corporate Regatta Crew Notes Briefing sessions will be held before each tank session 6.30pm and 7.30pm each evening 29th June- 2nd July 2015 at The Scottish Rowing Centre Welcome to Clydesdale one of the oldest amateur rowing clubs in Scotland. Formed in 1857 the club has been in its present boathouse for over a century. Some of our veterans have been rowing here for more than half of that. You can imagine the stories. In that time the club has produced some outstanding athletes, launching the careers of World Champions and Olympic medallists. Our members, men, women and juniors have won many honours competing and winning at Scottish, British and International Championship events held around the world. So, if you catch the rowing bug, who knows, you could be winning medals in years to come!! Clydesdale s Corporate Regatta is an annual event which has been running for many years. It is one of the club s biggest fundraising events with the proceeds from the race entries going towards new boats and gym equipment. It is also where many of our current members started their rowing careers and maybe where you ll begin yours. We hope that you enjoy your time rowing at Clydesdale. 1. Location of the clubhouse for water training sessions The boathouse is located near the western end of Glasgow green, near the High Court. Within the building are two separate clubs, Clydesdale ARC occupies the eastern section which is on the left as you face the building. This is where the water sessions will be held. If the door isn t open just ring the bell. See map in Appendix Driving to the club house You can park outside the club house on Glasgow Green. Enter on Kings Drive, opposite the Glasgow Green Football Academy. This has a no entry sign, but rowers can access here. You then drive along the edge of the river towards the city centre. You must drive with your hazard warning lights on and only at 5mph. 1

Location of Scottish Rowing Centre for tank sessions See map in Appendix Facilities at club house Your coaches will give you a proper tour of facilities when you come down for your first training session, but for information we have male and female changing rooms which have showers and toilets, a gym area with ergos (rowing machines) and weights, a kitchen and tea room area, and a boat storage area. 5. Do not leave valuables in the club house Unfortunately we have had some thefts of personal property from people walking into the club house off the street. Therefore, please always make sure the front door is closed/ locked behind you and we advise you not to leave valuables in the changing rooms. It is probably safer to leave these items locked in your car. 6. Do not leave things in your pockets during training This is valid for both tank sessions and on the water training. We have had people drop items e.g. keys into the tank. These are at least retrievable with some effort. If you drop items into the Clyde, you won t get them back!! 7. Clothes for tank sessions The tank is inside and in the summer can get quite hot. We would advise you to wear shorts and t-shirt and a pair of trainers. The tank is a boat that remains stationary whilst water is pumped past either side to replicate the boat moving through the water when rowing. There is a walkway along the side of the boat for coaches to stand next to you and adjust your body position. You will need to wear trainers whilst in the boat, as the foot plates are like those on a rowing machine that you would find in the gym and strap around your shoes. 8. Clothes for water training Although it is summertime it can get a bit chilly on the river so make sure you have plenty of clothes with you. For the first few sessions you will be doing a lot of rowing in pairs rather than all four together and so you can get cold quite easily. We d also recommend you to bring a set of waterproofs if you have them. The boats all have shoes in them so you will not need trainers to wear in the boat. However, bring sensible shoes for carrying the boat out of the club house and down to the water. The steps can be slippery when wet, so make sure your shoes have good grip. 9. Bottle of water/juice for training Bring a bottle of water/juice with you for all training sessions as it will refresh your mind and body when you stop for a break. 10. Change of clothes and a towel It is very rare for corporate crews to capsize, but in case it does happen to you, please bring with you to all training sessions a change of clothes and a towel. There are showers in the club house too to clean off the traces of the Clyde! 2

3 11. Race day clothes In order to look unified as a team, it is a good idea to agree on a team kit before race day. You can either get t-shirts printed, or just all wear the same colours. 12. Come to training even if not all your crew can make it for a session If a member of your crew is unable to attend a water session, it s not a problem, we can still accommodate you. We will either ask a club member to sub in or if there is another crew missing people too we may combine crews for a session. 13. How you can communicate with the club You can always use the corporate regatta address corporateregatta@clydesdalearc.org.uk for general queries, but once we have allocated you your coach, please direct all training queries through them. They will either give you an address or telephone number to contact them. 14. How the club can communicate with you We will collect one address per crew and all information will be sent to that one person who can then distribute around the rest of the crew. Please make sure that it is an account that you check regularly. 15. Crew information for race day programme For each race day we always produce a programme for you to keep to as a memento. For the programme, please provide us with the following: Crew name A couple of sentences about each crew member and coach A crew photo We shall be asking for this to be submitted by Monday 27 th July Please to corporateregatta@clydesdalearc.org.uk. 16. Times for tank session All of your team need to do one tank session but this does not need to be on the same evening. The tank sessions this year are: Monday 29 th June 2015: 7-8pm or 8-9pm Tuesday 30 th July 2015: 7-8pm or 8-9pm Wednesday 1 st July 2015: 7-8pm or 8-9pm Thursday 2 nd July 2015: 7-8pm or 8-9pm Please let us know which sessions you are available for by ing corporateregatta@clydesdalearc.org.uk.tank sessions with fewer than 6 people will not run; those affected will be notified in advance to choose another session. 3

Times for water training Your whole crew need to plan to do six water training sessions in the seven weeks from 6 th July 2014 to the 20 th August 2015 : Mondays from 6 th July 2015: 6-7:30pm or 7:30-9pm Tuesdays from 7 th July 2014: 6-7:30pm or 7:30-9pm Wednesdays from 8 th July 2014: 6-7:30pm or 7:30-9pm Thursdays from 9 th July 2014: 6-7:30pm or 7:30-9pm This will be the same session every week. Please let us know which sessions you are available for by ing corporateregatta@clydesdalearc.org.uk. Please agree with your coach which of these weeks you will take as holiday and us at the above address. 18. Race day Race day this year will be Saturday 22 nd August Please invite family and friends to support you. The whole club house will be opened up and there will be a tea bar and barbeque. In addition to the water races there will also be an ergo challenge where each crew member rows a short distance each and the fastest crew wins. 19. 6 Appendix 2 Location of the Scottish Rowing Centre (SRC) If you are travelling to the SRC from Glasgow on the M74, go past the loch on your left hand side and come off at junction 6. Take the turning towards Motherwell. Then take the first left into Strathclyde Country Park and the first left again so that you are on the road between the river (on your left) and the loch (on your right). Take the first right into the car park. The tank is located in the left hand side of the building in front of you as you enter the car park. Scottish Rowing Centre 6
