KALALAU H, SN Best for: Prking: On-foot looks t notorious Npli Cost, picture-perfect snorkeling pool, nd short wlk to Hwi i s scred hul site. Tke Hwy. 560 CC to its end, which is 10 mi. from the Hnlei River bridge. Overflow prking is t Hen Stte Prk, on right just before mm. 10/560. H: Kuluolk Hul Heiu (.5-mi.); Ke e to Hen Bech (up to 2.5 mi.); Kllu Tril hikes: Npli view (1 mi.), Hnkpii Bech (4 mi.), Hnkpii Flls (8 mi.), Npli high point (6 mi.); Limhuli Grden (.75-mi.) To the Kuluolk Hul Heiu, begin t Ke e Bech nd pick up tril tht skirts the shoreline to your left s you fce the bech this is not the Kllu Tril. Curl round t the edge of the blck rocks, losing sight of Ke e, nd then climb muddy steps, keeping left ll the wy. You rech the top of series of grssy terrces, bout 80 feet bove the se. Cliffs rise steeply inlnd nd big swells crsh the shore. This spot tody, s it ws in ntiquity, is where the ncient hul nd chnts re performed. Below the top pltform re the ruins of Kulupo Heiu, which gurded the hul site. For Ke e to Hen Bech which is the shortcut to getting long view down the Npli Cost strt t Ke e Bech, nd wlk to your right s you fce the wter. Shortly into the wlk, look bck to see the Npli Cost, its buttresses receding in the distnce. About midwy on this wlk you cross Limhuli Strem, inlnd from which ws the site of Tylor Cmp. Bck in the hippie dys which ren t so fr bck on the north shore Tylor Cmp ws well-known commune. After crossing the strem, you need to

3 negotite the blck rock shoreline round the point, or, if the surf is high, you my hve to cut inlnd through ironwood nd heliotrope trees. Some hikers my wish to turn round here. For Kllu Tril hikes, begin t the trilhed kiosk on your left s you drive into the prking re. The Kllu is tough tril, even for sesoned hikers. Strt on sunny dy, the erlier the better, s mny people hed up this tril, mny of them ill-prepred. For hikes longer thn those described here, think bout bckpcking. The tril begins steeply, climbing rocks nd pcked dirt, over section tht lets you know right wy wht you re in for. The first Npli viewpoint comes fter just.5-mile, s the tril levels out nd severl wve-bttered cliffs cn be seen down the cost. On the wy from the viewpoint to Hnkpii Bech, you ll get nother good view down Npli, before dropping bout 500 feet through lush folige to the bech. You need to cross the strem t bech level, over rocks, which is not esy without getting your feet wet. A rope hndril to id hikers is sometimes vilble. Wtch Out: Be wre tht people drown frequently t Hnkpii don t go ner the wter except on the clmest of summer dys.wves knock people down even t the shoreline. To Hnkpii Flls, cross the strem nd look for the tril bout 50 feet fter the crossing. The first mile of the tril, to rin shelter in bmboo grove, is not s hrd s the rest of this tril, lthough often very mucky. You then pick your wy over rocks those with helthy fer of heights will be unesy t times nd under brnches, crossing the strem severl times, before reching the flls, 300-foot ribbon flling into pool. The wlk to Hnkpii Flls is ftiguing two miles. To Npli high point 800 feet bove se level continue pst the tril to the flls, beginning switchbcks immeditely. After mile of climbing, ffording some spectculr sewrd nd inlnd views towrd the flls, you rech the high point. The tril doesn t come bck down to se level until reching the Kllu Vlley. Wtch Out: Bring wter, sturdy mud shoes nd hiking pole on the Kllu Tril. Prking for Limhuli Grden is.25-mile before reching rod s end t Ke e Bech; turn uphill t signed entry. Now Ntionl Tropicl Botnicl Grden, the grounds extend up lv rock terrces built by the vlley s ncient dwellers. This grden is known for its ntive Hwiin vegettion, s well s for plnts brought here by voyging Polynesins. The vlley sits under Bli Hi. Note: Admission is chrged for self-guided tours, which includes n informtive booklet one of the best plnt books vilble. SN: Ke e Bech, when surf is breking gently on its reef, is n idel snorkeling pool. Keep to your right s you enter sndy shore, swimming out long the reef, where you cn tke brek nd sit on the ledge. The view of the cliffs is keeper. Wtch Out: Wter escpes this cove on the cliff side, so be mindful of the current. Avoid swimming here when surf is high.

5 2. HAENA H, SN, SF Best for: Prking: Snorkeling, surfing nd bech strolling with drop-ded views of Bli Hi. At Hen City Bech Prk,.75-mi. CC of mm. 8/560, bout 7 mi. from Hnlei By. H: Hen Point (2 mi.) To Hen Point, strt up the bech to your right s you fce the surf. You ll wlk by Tunnels Bech, populr snorkeling nd surfing spot, on the sme strip of snd from the bech prk. Just beyond Tunnels is sndy Hen Point. When the surf is firly clm, you cn wlk hundred yrds or so offshore in nkle-deep wter; good vntge point for photogrphy buffs. Wtch Out: You my wnt surf shoe to protect ginst shrp rocks if venturing onto the shllow reef. SN: At Hen City Bech re sndy plces to get in nd flipper round, but the rel ction is up the bech t Tunnels. For Tunnels Bech prking s you re driving in from the Hnlei direction look for dirt drive.25-mile CC of mm. 8/560, pst Hen Street t telephone pole #144R. A second Tunnels Bech prking spot is.25- mile beyond the first dirt drive with green chin-link fence running long both sides cross from telephone pole #14. If these res re full, prk t Hen City Bech nd wlk up to Tunnels. Tunnels hs generous swth of snd nd deep-wter corl reef ner shore tht ttrcts multitude of fish, s well s tourists nd the occsionl snorkeling tour group. A bonus for Tunnels is the perfect view of Bli Hi the nme for Mkn Ridge tht originted from the movie, South Pcific. SF: Surfers pddle the chnnel t Tunnels Bech to the reef brek. This is shllow brek with tricky currents; sk the locls. Cnnons Bech is on the other end of Hen City Bech Prk. Scope the brek usully left slide from the unimproved turnouts s you leve the prk heded for Ke e. Like Tunnels, this is reef brek; wtch the locls. If they re out there, consider surfing here, but it they re not, don t try it. Neither of these spots is for beginners. 3. KEPHUI POINT H Best for: A bech wlk with Bli Hi views nd solitude, even on busy dys long this populr stretch of cost. Prking: Tke the Hwy. 560 CC of Hnlei to.5-mi. CC of mm. 7/560. Ptrons nd shoppers my prk in the lot for the Hnlei Colony Resort. Prking lso just pst the lot; turn OS on dirt Oneone Rd.

6 Hen Bech H: Hen Point (2.5 mi.) To Hen Point, wlk through the prking lot to short ccess pth between the resturnts nd the resort. Hed to your left when you get on the snd. Plms mingle with ironwoods mong few low-key vction homes inlnd. After bout.5-mile, the homes give wy to open spce prt of YMCA cmp nd the reef encroches up to the sndy shore. Wtch Out: Surf nd reef here combine for dngerous swimming. As you continue, the reef protrudes from the wter, just s you rech wide cove, noted by the hlf-dozen blck rocks t its shore. At the fr end of this cove is Hen Point, where, if conditions permit, you cn wlk surprisingly fr distnce on corl shol. A Bli Hi view drws you long the lst prt of the wlk. On the wy bck, you re looking cross Hnlei By to the bluff t Princeville. Note: This hike connects with TH2, continuing long the bech to Tunnels nd Hen City Bech Prk. 4. WAINIHA Best for: Prking: MB, P A non-tourist bike ride or pddle up one of Hwi i s most mysterious vlleys. At Winih, smll outpost just CC of Lumhi Bech on Hwy. 560 t mm. 6/560. Prk off rod ner the store. MB: Strting in town nd heding towrd Hen, you immeditely come to the first of two wooden, one-lne bridges, slung low cross the Winih River. Between the first

7 nd second bridge is dirt rod upriver tht you cn bike bout mile, giving you look t some dnk tropicl grdens nd old homested cottges. This neighborhood hs been home to certin fmilies for three centuries. Then bcktrck nd cross the second bridge nd hed up pved Powerhouse Rod, on your left. It s two miles nd bout 500-foot climb to the end of the rod, with most elevtion gined t the beginning. Jungle flor nd birds re t hnd. The rod opens to ridge views fter bout one mile. At 1.5 miles, s the rod levels out, you come to prklike homested plms, lwn, pond nd strem cscde, ll the work of retiree who mde this beutiful grden his second creer. A hlf-mile pst the homested, the pvement ends nd the dirt rod is blocked by locked gte nd n ssortment of keep out signs. As you look up the mountin, towrd your right, is Winih Pli, the 4,000-foot cliffs which re the border of the Alki Swmp, sitting on plteu behind the pli. Up this river vlley until the lte 1800s lived 65-person colony, the descendents of the folkloric Menehune. Locls tell of cves deep in the vlley leding into the bse of Mount Wilele. The Winih River forks upstrem from the by, t the two bridges, nd comes together gin bout mile upstrem, mking nrrow islnd. Both forks cn be pddled long short stretch of nvigble wter, where commercil tours re not llowed, but individuls re permitted. Extend your time on the wter with trip onto the by, on clmer dys.
