3 Welcome Dear Athletes and Parents, We would like to welcome and congratulate you on your selection into the 2014 Victorian Development Squad (VDS). This athlete/parent information pack provides you with information including training venues and dates of the VDS training sessions, as well as key contacts and other important information relating to the VDS. We believe that with the great level of support from coaches and key volunteers, this year s program will enable the participants to grow and develop lifesaving sport in Victoria. We expect that each athlete will already be undertaking a considerable volume of training such as swim squads, athletics clubs or training for other sports. The VDS is focused on and designed to complement and extend the skills of committed participants, by allowing them to train with the best Surf Life Saving athletes in Victoria and to be coached by qualified coaches outside of their normal club environment. In addition, training completed with the VDS will lead towards selection trials for the Victorian Development Team in the U13, U14 and U15 age groups. The Victorian Development team will compete in the Southern States Challenge in Victoria, 8-11 January 2015 (estimated cost per athlete is $ ). The venue for this event is Geelong Grammar and Torquay SLSC, and it is intended that the VDS program will enable athletes to perform to the best of their abilities at this event. We look forward to seeing you improve your lifesaving competition skills throughout the VDS training sessions in preparation for the upcoming 2014/2015 summer season. 4 Aim of the program To train identified young athletes to be there best through access to high level coaches, programs and the technical components of surf sports. Through: A positive and fun learning environment Access to feedback through programs designed to develop skills A competitive environment at training to hone their newly found skills in simulated race components Providing education to better understand training, training requirements, nutrition, hydration, recovery, technical approach and information sharing Focus on lifting the junior competition standards across the state from a technical and competitive perspective. Graduates from the VDS are expected to be role models at their own club sessions to help disseminate this information. If you are unable to attend every training session that is fine, we understand that everyone has a busy schedule and a number of other commitments. The program is designed to cater for everyone even if you can only get to 2-3 training sessions throughout the program. Water Safety at Training For training at the beach to go ahead, we require a number of parents to volunteer to provide water safety while athletes are in the water. If at any stage we don t have the required amount of water safety, training will be stopped or cancelled. 5 Venues Williamstown S&LSC Esplanade, Williamstown, 3016 Ocean Grove SLSC - Surf Beach Road, Ocean Grove, 3226 MSAC Aughtie Drive, Albert Park Cost/Payments The cost to be involved in the VDS is $100 per athlete. Funds are put towards equipment purchase and maintenance, transport of equipment/gear and venue hire. Payment is required by 5.00pm Friday 10 October. *Please note there will be no refunds for this payment. Payment can be made through the following options: EFT Payments Westpac BSB: Account: *Please include your child s name and VDS in the reference. Or to pay via credit card please follow these instructions: - Go to the online payment gateway at - For Choose your Club or Service: select Lifesaving Victoria - Transaction Type: Special Event - Enter athlete's name, meaningful details (VIC Development Squad), amount, payees name, contact details and for receipt - Click 'Submit" - Follow the prompts *Please note that cash will not be accepted as payment. You will receive a receipt/invoice after you have made payment, which will have an amount owing of $0. If payment is not received by 5.00pm Friday 10 October, you will be ineligible to participate in the remaining sessions of the VDS. Team App The Victorian Development Squad now has our own Smartphone App. It'll keep you up-to-date with all the details regarding training and will be able to provide notifications if we have to change venue at the last minute. To download, go to the app store and search for Team app (it is a free download). Once downloaded, launch Team App and search for Victorian Development Squad, then sign-up to Team App. You'll be sent an to confirm your registration. 5

6 What to bring Athletes must ensure that they are prepared for training and arrive with all necessary equipment. The following list will give you a guide. Pink Vest Water bottle (full) Food and snacks for between and after sessions Bathers Goggles Wetsuit (sealed steamer = long arm & long leg) Towel (x2) Board Runners Running clothes Raincoat Warm clothes (spare) Sun screen Hat and Club Cap Go Pro (if you have one) Victorian Development Team Next year Victoria is hosting the Southern States Development Challenge from 8-11 January Trial Dates Trial Date Ocean/ Beach Trials Pool Trials November 30 Torquay SLSC 9am-1pm Geelong Grammar 2-5pm December 6 Junior Carnival No.1 (Mordialloc LSC) (U12, U13, U14) December 13 Senior Carnival No.1 (Bancoora SLSC) (U15, U14 optional) NB whilst U12 competitors are ineligible for the Southern States team they will be encouraged to participate in the trials on November 30 to gain experience for the following year. Pool Training Pool Lifesaving training is available for those athletes that are interested in trying out for the Victorian Development Team and would like to learn or develop their skills in the events. Training is at MSAC on Sunday evenings, and the cost per session is $10 paid to the coaches on the night. Anyone wishing to attend can simply turn up on the night, for more information including training times please visit: 6

7 Representative Selection Process State Development Team To be considered for the State Development teams athletes must be able to comply with the following mandatory criteria: 1. Be a financial member of an LSV club 2. Hold the relevant qualification for that age group 3. Attend the selection trials 4. Be able to attend State Development Team training sessions once the team has been selected 5. Be able to attend the Southern States Development Challenge (9-12 January 2014) 6. Be able to contrbute financially to the cost of the team please note that LSV will endeavour to keep the cost of this trip as low by paying 50% of the costs. The major costs of the trip will include accommodation, meals, transport and uniform (estimated cost is roughly $ ) *Other considerations may be communicated by Team Coaches and Managers at a later stage. The selectors will base the selection of the team on following criteria: 1. Results from the three trials 2. Team Balance 3. Involvement in the 2014 Victorian Development Squad is not essential, but will be looked upon favourably by selectors. Selection Process: The State Development Team will consist of 8 competitors (4 male and 4 female) in each age group (U/13, U/14 & U/15). *Please note that water athletes will be required to compete in beach events and vice versa. Events used for selection: The events which will be used for selection will be: Water Swim Race, Board Race, Iron Beach Flags, Sprints, 1 or 2km run Pool Line Throw, 100m Manikin Tow w/fins, 100m Obstacle Swim, 100m manikin carry w/fins, 50m manikin Carry 7

10 Media Consent Form For promotional and training resource purposes, photographs and video will be taken throughout the duration of the 2014 Victorian Development Squad program. If you have no concerns with the possibility of your image being used for these purposes please complete and return this consent form to the Aquatic Sports Department.
