6 Junior Surf Sports Events Beach Flags Competitors lie down in the sand, facing away from the flags. At the signal they get to their feet, turn & sprint to a flag (piece of hose) placed in the sand. There is always less flags than competitors. Anyone who fails to gain a flag is eliminated until there are only 2 competitors left. The competitor who wins the last flag, wins. Beach Sprint The beach sprint course is usually set over 70m. Starting when the whistle is sounded the competitor sprints across the soft sand through the finish line. The 1st competitor s chest across the finish line is deemed the winner. Beach Relay The beach relay consists of a team of 4 competitors & a baton (rubber hose). & is conducted on the beach sprint course. Members 1 & 3 are stationed at one end of the course whilst members 2 & 4 are at the other. The object is to successfully complete the race without dropping the baton & exchanging within the set boundaries. First across the line wins. All Age Beach Relay Conducted as per the beach relay but with 1 competitor per age group (U9-U14). Wade Involves running out to an allocated a turning mark (often a person rather than buoy) at knee-waist depth water followed by wading, diving or swimming parallel to the beach to another marker before returning to the beach to run to the finish line. Wade Relay A 4 person event where children complete the wade race one at a time & tag the next team member who then continues on. The race is completed once the 4th & final team member finishes the wading course & runs up the beach to the finish line. March Past A team of 12 marches in time to music around a set course carrying a surf reel, line & belt and following their standard (flag) bearer. Teams march in formation following commands & are judged on factors such timing, arm & leg swing, space & dressing, body carriage & presentation. Points are accrued for incorrect actions & the team with the least points is the winner. Champion Lifesaver An individual event including a theory questionnaire, resuscitation, surf race, board race, beach sprint & rescue tube swim. A results based pointscore determines the overall winner. page 6

7 Junior Surf Sports Events Surf Race The surf race involves swimming around a course of buoys (usually left to right) placed out in the ocean. The distances vary for each age group with younger children completing a shorter course. Surf Teams Race Consisting of 4 members, all competitors swim in the same race, around the buoys and back to the beach. Each placing is given a certain amount of points (e.g. 1st = 1 point, 10th = 10 points). The team with the least amount of points win or in the case of a draw, the team who crossed the line first, wins. Iron Person The ironman/ironwoman race involves both a swim around the set of buoys & a board paddle with a run in between each of these + a final run to the finish line. The order of the swim & board legs can vary. Rescue & Resuscitation (R&R) A team event combining disciplined technique, marching & resuscitation skills. Teams comprise either 2 (2 person R&R) or 5 (5 person R&R) members & are judged against a set of criteria where incorrect or incomplete actions accrue points. The team with the least points is the winner. Board Race Paddling an age appropriate board, children start on the beach, enter the water & paddle out to & around a set course of buoys and return to shore with a final run through the finish flags, finishing on their feet in control of their board. Board Relay Teams of 3 competitors compete in a relay format over a course similar to the individual board race. After rounding the buoys and returning to the beach the 1st competitor runs around 2 turning flags to tag the 2nd competitor. The 2nd competitor then completes the course & tags the final competitor. The race finishes when the final competitor rounds all buoys, returns to the beach & runs to the finish line. Cameron Relay A team event with 4 children - 1 board paddler, 1 swimmer & 2 runners compete in this relay where each competitor tags the next one. The order of the swim & board legs are drawn by ballot. The 2 run legs are completed after each water event leg with the 2nd run leg finishing the event between the flags. First Aid Teams of 2 provide first aid in a simulated scenario within a set time limit. Points are awarded for correct actions & the team with the most points is the winner. page 7
