A 5-second time penalty will be given for each of the following infractions: 1. Illegal starts, strokes, and turns. 2. Touching the pool bottom or pulling the lane divider. 3. Failure to touch the finish edge.

2010 JUNIOR LIFEGUARD TELEGAMES 8 Object Support On an acoustical signal, competitors support a weight at the surface of the water for as long as possible, while remaining within their lane no more than 2 m from the edge of the pool. The weight is attached to a floating marker by a 30 cm line. Competitors may support the weight in any manner as long as the floating marker remains on the surface. The clock stops when the floating marker submerges. The Start: At the referee s first whistle, the competitors enter the water. At the referee s second whistle, the competitors return to the starting edge to place one hand on the pool edge and the other hand on the weight. When all competitors have assumed this ready position, the starter shall give the command Take your marks whereupon the competitors shall immediately lift the weight into the water while retaining their hold on the pool edge. When the start signal is given, competitors immediately release the pool edge. If any competitor fails to release the wall immediately on the start signal, a 5-second penalty shall be assigned. Equipment Competitors shall use the following weights: Age group Weight 9 yr. & under 2.5 kg / 5 lb. 10 & 11 yr. 12 & 13 yr. 4.5 kg / 10 lb. 14 & 15 yr. 9 kg / 20 lb. A delayed release of the pool edge after the start signal. 2. Taking assistance from any pool fitting (e.g., lane lines, pool edge or bottom steps). 3. Use of any device that supplements a competitor s buoyancy (e.g., swimming aids, floatation devices, swim wear). 4. Leaving the designed support zone after the start and before the finish.

2010 JUNIOR LIFEGUARD TELEGAMES 9 Obstacle Swim This is a timed event. With a dive entry on an acoustic signal, the competitor swims the course, passing under the immersed obstacles to touch the finish edge of the pool. After the dive entry, competitors must surface before the first obstacle and after passing under each obstacle; and after a turn prior to passing under an obstacle. Competitors may push off the pool bottom when surfacing from under each obstacle. Surfacing means the competitor s head breaks the plane of the surface of the water. Age group Distance 9 yr. & under 50 m 10 & 11 yr. 50 m 12 & 13 yr. 100 m 14 & 15 yr. 100 m Equipment Obstacles: Obstacles are fixed at right angles onto lane ropes in a straight line across all lanes and extend 35 cm / 14 inches below the surface. Positioning obstacles for short course (25 m) pools: One obstacle is located 12.5 m from the starting edge. Penalties In addition to the general conditions the following behaviour shall be penalized. A 5-second time penalty will be given for each of the following infractions: 1. A false start. 2. Passing over an obstacle without immediately returning over that obstacle and then passing under it. 3. Failure to surface after the dive entry or after a turn. 4. Failure to surface between obstacles. 5. Failure to touch the wall during the turn. 6. Failure to touch the finish edge.

2010 JUNIOR LIFEGUARD TELEGAMES 10 Throwing Accuracy In this timed event, the competitor throws an unweighted line to hit a floating target 3 times within a 2-minute time limit. The Start: Competitors stand facing the target, motionless and at attention (legs together and arms beside the body), holding the line with one or two hands. This event shall use the 1-start rule as follows: On the long whistle, competitors step into the throw zone and remain there. On the starter s Take your marks command, competitors immediately assume the starting position. When competitors are motionless, the starter gives the acoustic starting signal. On an acoustic starting signal: Competitors throw and retrieve the line. The line may hit the target directly or be thrown beyond the target and pulled back to touch it. The event is finished when the competitor s line hits the floating target for the third time. Throw Zone: Competitors must remain on the deck and in their allotted lanes, poolside of a clearly defined mark 1.5 m from the pool edge. If there is a raised portion of the poolside, the line shall be 1.5 m back from the deck side of the raised portion. Time limit: Competitors must hit the target 3 times within 2 minutes. If a throw falls short or outside the allotted lane, competitors may recover the line and throw again as often as necessary up to the 2-minute limit. Competitors who fail to hit the target 3 times within the time limit will be assigned a time of 2 minutes. Equipment Throw line: The throw line length shall vary depending on the age group: Competitors 11 years and under use a line between 6 m and 7 m in length. Competitors 12 to 15 years use a line between 9 m and 10 m in length. The throw line is 8 mm diameter buoyant polypropylene. Competitors must use the throw lines supplied by organizers. Target: Target shall be a maximum of 40 cm x 40 cm x 40 cm +/- 2 cm Age Target Distance Rope Length 11 yr. & under 4 m 6 7 m yr. 7 m 9 10 m Penalties In addition to the general conditions the following behaviour shall be penalized. A 5-second time penalty will be given for each of the following infractions: 1. A false start. 2. Leaving the throw zone at any time after the start and before the finish.

2010 JUNIOR LIFEGUARD TELEGAMES 11 Tow with Fins With a dive start on an acoustic signal, the competitor swims freestyle with fins and tube. After touching the turning edge the competitor fixes the rescue tube around a manikin floating at the surface at the edge and tows it to the finish. Competitors 11 yr. and under swim 25 m freestyle and 25 m tow. Competitors 12 yr. and older will swim 75 m freestyle and 25 m tow. The event is complete when the competitor touches the finish edge of the pool. Note: Competitors must tow, not carry, the manikin with the line of the rescue tube fully extended. Equipment Manikin: The manikin is empty for competitors 11 yr. and under, but filled with water so that it floats with the top of the transverse line at the surface for year-olds. Manikins must meet the requirements and specifications of the Lifesaving Society. Fins: The fins must not exceed the specifications as follows: length 60 cm including shoe or ankle strap; width 21 cm at the widest point of the blade. Rescue Tube: Specifications as follows: length minimum 875 mm and maximum 975 mm. Maximum thickness is 100 mm. Maximum breath is 155 mm. Penalties In addition to the general conditions the following behaviour shall be penalized. A 5-second time penalty will be given for each of the following infractions: 1. A false start. 2. Taking assistance from any pool fitting, (e.g. lane rope or steps) when fixing the rescue tube around the manikin not including the pool bottom. 3. The manikin handler positioning the manikin incorrectly or making contact with the manikin after the competitor has touched the turning edge. 4. Incorrect fixing of rescue tube around the manikin (e.g. not around and under both arms). 5. Not securing the rescue tube around the manikin (judged at the top of the head) before the 5 m lines. 6. Pushing or carrying, instead of towing, the manikin. 7. Not towing the manikin with the line of the rescue tube fully extended. 8. Not keeping the manikin s mouth and nose above the surface for the majority of the time. 9. Touching the finish edge without the rescue tube and manikin correctly in place. 10. Failure to touch the finish edge.

2010 JUNIOR LIFEGUARD TELEGAMES 12 Medley Relay Relay teams are composed of males or females or both, whose total age determines their relay age group. Add together the age of the four competitors to determine the relay age group. For example, = years or less 100 metres 25 m lifesaving kick, 25 m breaststroke*, 25 m backstroke*, 25 m front crawl* 60 years or less 200 metres 50 m lifesaving kick, 50 m breaststroke*, 50 m backstroke*, 50 m front crawl* The first swimmer starts in the water at the pool edge. Second, third and fourth swimmers use a dive start from the deck; no starting blocks are allowed. A minimum water depth of 2 m is required for dive starts. Lifesaving kick is legs-only using eggbeater, whip kick, scissor or inverted scissor. Arms may not be used for propulsion, but may be held in the position of the swimmer s choice. The backstroke leg starts with a dive; swimmers must be on their backs by the start of their third, single arm stroke. *Except as specified, Swimming/Natation Canada rules apply. Penalties In addition to the general conditions the following behaviour shall be penalized. A 5-second time penalty will be given for each of the following infractions: 1. A false start. 2. Failure to surface after each dive entry. 3. Leaving the start after before the previous competitor has touched the edge. 4. Failing to touch the finish edge. Competitors may swim only one leg in a relay. Each relay team MUST consist of 4 different swimmers to be considered eligible.

2010 JUNIOR LIFEGUARD TELEGAMES 13 Obstacle Relay Relay teams are composed of males or females or both, whose total age determines their relay age group. Add together the age of the four competitors to determine the relay age group. For example, = years or less 4 x 50 m, short course 60 years or less 4 x 50 m, short course With a dive entry on an acoustic signal, the first competitor swims 50 m freestyle passing under two obstacles. After the first competitor touches the turning edge, the second, third and fourth competitors repeat the procedure in turn. Competitors must surface after the dive entry, before the first obstacle, and after passing under each obstacle. Surfacing means the competitor s head breaks the plane of the surface of the water. Competitors may push off the bottom when surfacing from under obstacles. Equipment Obstacles: Obstacles are fixed at right angles onto lane ropes in a straight line across all lanes and extend 35 cm / 14 inches below the surface.
