58 nebraska women's Swimming & Diving 2012-13 Huskers Compete in First Big Ten Campaign The 2011-12 Husker swimming and diving squad battled and improved throughout its first season in the Big Ten.

1 58 nebraska women's Swimming & Diving Huskers Compete in First Big Ten Campaign The Husker swimming and diving squad battled and improved throughout its first season in the Big Ten. The team captured three dual wins, including victories over South Dakota State, Nebraska- Omaha and Iowa State. The Huskers also produced their best performances of the year at the 2012 Big Ten Championships in Iowa City, Iowa, although as a team NU settled for an 11th-place finish. Three weeks after the Big Ten Championships, Alyson Ramsey, Amy Herman, Kaitlan Walker, Kailey Harmon and Payton Michaud represented the Huskers at the NCAA Zone Diving Meet in Iowa City. Herman led Nebraska with an eighth-place finish in the platform diving event, while Michaud and Ramsey both earned spots in the three-meter finals. Michaud s final score of earned her a 12thplace finish, while Ramsey s brought home 17th. In the one-meter dive, Walker reached the finals and scored a to place 18th. While the NU divers capped their season with solid performances at the Zone Diving Meet, the swimmers added several season bests at the Big Ten meet. Shannon Guy swam her way into the Husker record books with one of the top-five times in school history in the 100-yard butterfly at the Big Ten meet. Guy clocked a to finish 11th overall at the Big Ten Championships. Her previous career-best time came with a at the 2011 Big 12 Championships. She also notched a season-best time of 2:02.48 in the 200 butterfly to finish 15th at the Big Ten meet. Guy added an NU season-best 1:04.76 in the 100-yard breaststroke at the championships. Sophomore Bailey Pons smashed her career best in the 1,650 freestyle by posting a time of 16:34.75, which was nearly four seconds faster than her sixthplace time at the 2011 Big 12 Championships. Pons record time was good for a 19th-place finish at the Big Ten Championships. She added a 37th-place finish in the 500 freestyle in a Husker season-best 4:53.57 at the Big Ten meet. Pons also notched an NU season-best 1:49.52 in the 200 freestyle at the championships. Junior Ellan Dufour clocked the second-fastest 200 backstroke of her career with a time of 2:01.07 to take 26th. She added a in the 100 backstroke to finish 22nd. Ariel Weech added season-best times for Nebraska in the 50 (23.47) and 100 freestyles (50.16) at the Big Ten Championships, while Kristin Strecker produced a team season best in the 200 breaststroke (2:20.76). Katie Davis pitched in team season bests in both the 200 IM (2:05.68) and the 400 IM (4:25.99). In addition to the season-best individual efforts at the Big Ten Championships, Nebraska s 200-yard medley relay team of Guy, Weech, Rebekah Land and Hayley Martin posted a 1:43.26 to take 11th. While Nebraska s swimming season ended with solid times at the Big Ten Championships, the Huskers hit the water to open the season nearly six months earlier at the Scarlet and Cream intrasquad meet on Sept. 30. After a successful start and another entertaining exhibition swim in the annual Alumni meet on Oct. 8, the Huskers opened the regular season with a victory over South Dakota State at the Devaney Natatorium on Oct. 22. Ten Huskers claimed victories against the Jackrabbits, including diving wins by Michaud in both the one-meter (265.95) and three-meter (290.40) events. Martin added a pair of wins of her own in the 50 (24.94) and 500 (53.41) freestyles. Pons, Guy, Dufour, Strecker, Land, Kelly Dunn, Natalie Morris and Morgan Flannigan added wins for the Huskers on the day. The Huskers made their first road trip of the year the following weekend, when they traveled to Houston, Texas, for the Hoilday Inn and Suites Invitational. Pons also competed at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha, Neb. Martin led the Huskers with a third-place finish in the 200 freestyle, while Ramsey added a third-place showing in the one-meter dive. The Huskers 400-yard freestyle relay team pitched in a fourth-place finish, while Pons took sixth in the 1,650 freestyle. Overall, NU claimed top-10 spots in 14 events. The Huskers returned home two weeks later to swim to a win over Nebraska-Omaha at the Devaney Natatorium on Nov. 11. NU improved to 15-0 all-time against the Mavericks by winning each of the first six events in the meet. Nebraska s 200-yard medley relay team of Dufour, Guy, Morris and Martin won the first event of the day, followed by individual wins from Riley Seidel (1,000 free), Pons (200 free), Martin (100 back), Strecker (100 breast) and Guy (200 fly). Pons added two more titles with wins in both the 100 and 500 freestyles, while Dufour added a win in the 200 backstroke. Morris capped NU s swimming wins with a victory in the 100 butterfly. In the diving well, Michaud claimed the one-meter dive with a then-career-best score of , while Walker captured the three-meter crown with a career-best The following weekend, the Huskers made their first trip of the season to a Big Ten destination to compete in the TYR Invitational in Evanston, Ill. NU took fourth overall with a 517, led by strong performances from Pons and Martin. Pons claimed runner-up honors in the 500 freestyle, while Martin added a runner-up finish in the 100 freestyle. The duo also joined forced with Land and Dunn on Nebraska s runner-up 400-yard freestyle relay at the TYR Invite. After a busy November of swimming, the Husker divers took center stage in December. The NU divers opened the month at the Hawkeye Invitational, Dec. 2-4, where Michaud produced a then-career-best score of to win the three-meter dive. NU s Pons, Flannigan and Mailene Leslie responded for the Big Red by sweeping the top three spots in the 1,000- yard freestyle. Martin added a victory in the 200 freestyle in a time of 1: In the final event of the afternoon, the Nebraska team of Martin, Dunn, Pons and Weech won the 400- yard freestyle relay, but it wasn t enough to prevent the Illini from claiming the dual win. In the final regular-season dual of the year, the Huskers welcomed Iowa State to the Devaney Natatorium for Senior Day. It was the final dual at Devaney for five seniors, including Bobbi Balogh, Mailene Leslie, D Arcy Schmidt, Riley Seidel and Caroline Shea. The Huskers sent their seniors out in style with a victory over the Cyclones. Pons took the first win for the Big Red with a season-best time of 10:12.88 in the 1,000 freestyle. Michaud closed out the regular season strong by sweeping the one-meter (290.02) and three-meter (308.67) diving events. Her score on the three-meter dive was a season best for Michaud. Kaitlan Walker finished 11th on the platform dive at the 2012 Big Ten Championships. Dufour swam to a pair of victories in the 100 and 200 backstrokes, while Weech, Dunn and Martin swept the top three spots in the 100 freestyle. Nebraska capped a winning day as the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Martin, Weech, Land and Dunn cruised to victory in the 400-yard freestyle relay. In addition to finding success in the water, the Huskers produced a strong season in the classroom. Overall, 17 Nebraska women s swimmers and divers captured academic All-Big Ten honors. Seniors Balogh, Leslie, Seidel and Shea capped their careers among NU s academic honor winners. Balogh and Leslie closed their careers as three-time academic allconference performers for the Huskers. Juniors Ramsey, Amy Herman, Kelsey Larson, Ashley Reiter and Sara Weinberg joined sophomores Michaud, Pons, Guy, Strecker, Grammar, Morgan Flannigan, Kailey Harmon and Megan Ziemann on the academic All-Big Ten squad.
