HELPFUL HINTS Swim classes may reach maximum capacity quickly. Please remember to register early so you will not be disappointed. If your class is full, please allow us to put you on the waiting list. We will contact you as soon as possible if a spot becomes available. Students must meet the age requirements and prerequisite prior to the first day of the class that they are registered for. Parents, please allow yourself extra time on the first day of class for completing class release forms and meeting your child s instructor. PRIVATE LESSONS One-on-one instruction provides the fastest progress possible due to the undivided attention of the instructor and individual lessons planned to meet the child s needs. Private Swim Lessons are scheduled throughout the summer and are available at different times during each session. Fees are five classes, 25 minutes each for $100, per single student. Only those registered for classes will be allowed in the water while classes are in session. The tot pool at Bad Königshofen pool is not available for use during class hours. Participants must be withdrawn from the class three days prior to the class start date to receive a refund, otherwise, the participant cannot be withdrawn and no refund will be given. The Arlington Parks and Recreation Department welcomes people of all ability levels to enjoy and participate in its wide variety of quality programs and services. CANCELED CLASSES In the event that a class is canceled, every effort will be made to notify you by telephone. On the first day of class please verify that the pool staff has the correct phone number. If a class is canceled for any reason, we will try to make up time by adding on time to remaining classes. 12 SPECIALTY CLASSES LIFEGUARD TRAINING Learning Objectives: Recognize specific characteristic behaviors of distressed swimmers and active and passive drowning victims; recognize aquatic emergencies and act promptly and appropriately; perform equipment-based rescue skills and techniques used by professional lifeguards; recognize and care for possible spinal cord injuries; learn to provide first aid and CPR. Must be at least 15 years old to enroll in this class and be able to swim a total of 300 yards, demonstrating freestyle and breaststroke. Must be able to swim 20 yards, submerge and retrieve a 10 lb. brick, return to the surface, and swim 20 yards back to the starting point within 1 minute 40 seconds. Must be able to tread water for 2 minutes using legs only. Candidates successfully completing the class will be certified in Lifeguarding, Standard First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer. Woodland West Pool WATER SAFETY INSTRUCTOR Learning Objectives: Through classroom learning and hands on experience, the American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Course will help you learn how to teach people of all ages to swim and to be safe in and around water. Participants must be at least 16 years old. 25 yards Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke, Sidestroke, Elementary Backstroke and 15 yards Butterfly. Must hold a current Lifeguard certification and be at least 17 years old. READY, SET, GUARD! JUNIOR GUARD CLASS Learning Objectives: Lifeguarding is a serious and rewarding job! Junior guard volunteers learn what it s like to be a lifeguard and gain the skills necessary for future employment. You will receive basic water training and classroom type activities with interactive videos. You must have completed Level 5 swimming skills or demonstrate the ability to swim 100 yards, tread water for two minutes and submerge to a depth of at least 8 feet. Bad Königshofen Pool JUNIOR GUARD MENTORING VOLUNTEER PROGRAM This is two week mentoring program designed to teach and prepare Junior Guards to become Lifeguards. Limited spots are available applicants will go through an interview process to determine if they will be selected. Recommendation from teacher or instructor. WATER SAFETY AIDE TRAINING & VOLUNTEER PROGRAM Through extensive training you will learn how to assist Water Safety Instructors in teaching swim lessons. The first portion of this training class is spent on stroke refinement and learning how to teach. The second portion is spent observing other swimming classes. Participants who are interested in working or volunteering in the Arlington Learn to Swim program will be required to apply and interview before being placed.
