23 FALL schedule Family Lessons 45 min Register all of your children s aquatic lessons at one convenient time! Family lessons are programmed by their time rather than by the level. This allows families to attend their lessons at the same time. Please bring your child s most recent progress report to the first lesson. Participants, who do not have a previous report or are unsure of their level, will be screened and assigned to an appropriate level during the first lesson. Participants will be placed in classes with children of the same ability and age. NOTE: Each class may include two or three different swimming levels. Parent participation is not required. Red Cross group lesson ratios will be followed and all skill evaluation will be ongoing throughout the session. Whale participants will be taught with schoolage children. To help improve our program, and provide a better teaching experience for your child, parents must provide their child s swimming level when registering for family lessons. Family lesson registration will not be available on the automated phone system (IVR). 37 WINTER schedule Family Lessons 45 min Register all of your children s aquatic lessons at one convenient time! Whale participants will be taught with school age children. To help improve our program, and provide a better teaching experience for your child, parents must provide their child s swimming level when registering for family lessons. Family lesson registration will not be available on the automated phone system (IVR). 51 LEADERSHIP Become a lifeguard or an instructor Lifeguards are more than just good swimmers. They are paramount to maintaining a safe leisure environment and educating the community to enjoy swimming, while focusing on prevention of water related accidents. Instructors are vital to teaching the important life skill of swimming through the delivery of quality aquatic programs in the community. They provide fun, enjoyable swimming lessons for people of all ages that focus on safety. Employment with the City of Guelph To become a lifeguard, swimming instructor or assistant instructor with the City of Guelph, you will need the following current certifications: Assistant Instructor Red Cross Assistant Water Safety Instructor Certification, Bronze Cross, and Standard First Aid with CPR-C certification. Instructor Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification, Standard First Aid with CPR-C, and NLS an asset. Lifeguard National Lifeguard Service (NLS) and Standard First Aid with CPR-C certifications. Recertification National Lifeguard Service (NLS) Bronze Cross Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Standard First Aid with CPR-C Recertify every two years Recertify every two years Recertify every two years Full course or recertification every three years Aquatic Leadership Information Important Standard First Aid Information Holders of Standard First Aid certificates from other agencies may not recertify their certificate with a Lifesaving Society recertification course. They may recertify only with the original certifying agency or take a full course. In order to comply with WSIB regulations, Standard First Aid award holders may do their first SFA recertification at a recertification course within three years of the original course. Thereafter, individuals must alternate between full courses and recertification courses in order to renew their award. Course Attendance Please note: one hundred per cent attendance and active participation in both the pool and classroom sessions is required to complete any aquatic leadership course. (Lateness is equivalent to absence) Prerequisites Original prerequisite certifications must be presented at the start of each course. Please consult the individual course descriptions to determine what is required. To check your current awards, visit lifesavingsociety.com and click on the Find a Member/Check Your Qualifications link. Note: If SFA is from an agency other than Lifesaving Society, a photocopy must be submitted. Age requirements Candidates must turn the identified age by the last scheduled day of the course. Proof of age will be required for all courses with an age prerequisite. Pre-course assignments and experience Advanced leadership courses may require the candidate to complete a pre-course assignment or provide proof of instructional/lifeguarding experience before the course begins. Please consult the individual course descriptions to determine what is required. Crash course and extended course formats Crash courses are the most common format used to deliver advanced aquatic leadership courses. Scheduled for one or two full weekends or over consecutive days (i.e. March Break), crash courses are intensive. Extended courses run over a duration of several weeks. The days and hours per week may vary depending on the course. Exams Candidates must attend the exam at the facility where the course was administered. Unsuccessful completion of a course Many courses utilize continuous evaluation. Unsuccessful candidates are required to retake the full course. What to bring to a course You will need to bring the original certification of the prerequisites required for the course. Be sure to consult individual course descriptions for prerequisites required. Course materials and schedules will be discussed on the first day. Bathing suit(s) and towel(s) will be needed for the water portions of courses. Other items you may be required to bring include: comfortable clothing, a whistle, notebook/paper, pens/pencils, lunch/dinner/ snacks and money for a payphone. RC = Red Cross LSS = Lifesaving Society 76 Fees listed are for Guelph residents. Non-residents please add $7.50. All fees are subject to applicable taxes.
