2 Nebraska Season Preview After a somewhat up-and-down season, Nebraska head coach Pablo Morales is eager to return to the pool in and see how far his team can go, both at the conference and national levels. This year s Husker squad is large - 36 swimmers and divers in all - but Morales feels that it can only help the program in terms of competition and depth. There s some logistical challenges in managing a larger team, Morales said. But it does bring some positives, and that is creating a certain energy and competition for finding one s place on the team. I think that s an environment we haven t shied away from creating. Leading the way for the team are seven seniors - Kaitlin Arntz, Colleen Criss, Karen Criss, Hailey Dean, Mariah Hutchinson, K e l s e y I d a a n d S a r a h Ziegelmann. The versatility and experience within the class gives Morales a solid foundation with which to work. Morales feels this is about as well-rounded a senior class as he has had in his time at Nebraska. Some years, senior classes bring a particular aspect above other things, Morales said. This class really brings it all, quite honestly, as examples, as contributors to the team, as top-notch swimmers, talented swimmers who make an impact in a big way at the Some years, senior classes bring a particular aspect above other things. This class really brings it all, quite honestly, as examples, as contributors to the team, as top-notch swimmers, talented swimmers who make an impact in a big way at the conference meet and at the national level. We have it all. This class is a strong class in many ways, and it s going to be a really tough class to replace. conference meet and at the national level. We have it all. This class is a strong class in many ways, and it s going to be a really tough class to replace. The current senior class will replace five seniors from the squad - C.J. Bray, Courtney Jolly, Jenna Stroud, Jenny Toler and Christina Yemm. All five contributed to the Huskers significantly over their careers, especially last season. Morales admits it won t be an easy task to replace last year s senior class, especially when it comes to their leadership and dedication to the program. I wish that all of our current team members could have seen the progression and their dedication, commitment and energy they had to show to really get to a high level, Morales said. That s exactly the type of progression that we re going to need to have everybody to make, regardless of their background, whether they ve had a lot of success or whether their great swimming is still ahead of them. Everybody can learn from their examples. The Huskers are still returning a lot of experience and talent, despite losing the seniors. It s no surprise that three seniors lead the way. Arntz, Dean and Hutchinson have all had strong careers through their first three years at Nebraska, and they have a chance to cement their status even further this year as some of Nebraska s top swimmers. The three have combined for nine top-eight finishes at the Big 12 Championships and eight times on the NU top-10 career charts. Arntz is one of the Big 12 s top returning breaststrokers, and she has made her mark in the Nebraska record books. She owns top-10 career times in the 100-yard breaststroke (7th), the 200-yard breaststroke (5th) and the 200-yard IM (4th). She also has four top-eight finishes at the conference meet, including a fifth-place finish in the 200 breaststroke and a seventh-place finish in the 100 breaststroke last season. Kaitlin came to our program as a quite accomplished and talented swimmer, and has worked her way into having substantial improvement each year, Morales said. She s just a tremendous person from the standpoint of her work ethic and her competitive desire, and her character is just strong and solid. She s committed herself to continue to grow as a swimmer, despite already having lots of success. Dean, along with Arntz, has formed one of the best one-two breaststroke combos for Nebraska in recent history. She has a pair of top-eight finishes at the conference level, as well as having the sixth-fastest 100-yard breaststroke time in NU history, which she set last year at the. Hailey has been our top-level sprint breaststroker in her time here, Morales said. She too is somebody who s had high aspirations, and has wanted to be better. We certainly expect great things from her, and I really feel like this year she can blossom again and finish up really well and be a top-level performer in the Big 12 Conference. She s an outstanding swimmer, and we re certainly excited about her prospects this year. Hutchinson will look to cap off what has so far been an exceptional career at Nebraska. She claimed the top spot in the NU record books with her time of in the 100-yard butterfly at last year s conference meet, just ahead of teammate Kelsey Grushecky who had set the school record earlier in the day. In all, Hutchinson owns four top-10 times in Nebraska history and has three top-eight finishes at the Big 12 Championships, as well as two other ninth-place finishes. Morales has been impressed with both Hutchinson s performance in the pool as well as her dedication and desire to improve herself. Mariah is representative of somebody whose desire makes all the difference in the world, Morales said. What an amazing example for our program to have somebody who came to Nebraska at a certain level and turned herself into an elite swimmer. She s a perfect example of somebody who has something set in her mind to accomplish, and is uncompromising, and shows that no matter what, you can accomplish great things if you have the true desire and the focus to do it. She s been a great leader on the team, well-liked, with great sensibilities. The rest of the senior class - Colleen and Karen Criss, Ida and Ziegelmann - bring more talent and experience to the table, giving the Huskers a very solid group at the top. Colleen Criss is another senior who excels at the breaststroke, making solid improvements throughout her first three years in Lincoln. Morales expects her to be a significant contributor to the team in the breaststroke and the individual medley. Karen Criss transferred to Nebraska last season after spending her first two seasons at the University of Louisville. The talent is there for Criss to make a big leap and become a force for Nebraska in the backstroke. Morales believes that after a year of adjustment and getting acclimated to Nebraska s team environment, she is ready to make a breakthrough in Ida has been hampered by injuries the past few seasons, but this year looks to be 100 percent healthy. When healthy, Ida has been a solid contributor in the backstroke and butterfly events for Nebraska. Injuries have kept her out of the last two, and Morales hopes she can have a healthy year, both for herself and for the team. nebraska swimming & diving huskers.com 23

I think the fact that her teammates elected her captain is a truly complimentary thing that really shows what amazing growth she s made, and what a total team person she s become, Morales said. A person such as that is invaluable on the team. She is expected to again be a contributor in the sprint freestyle and breaststroke events for the Huskers this season. The seniors hope to help the Husker team reach new heights in , and to achieve the goals the coaches have set for them to accomplish. Morales said his No. 1 goal is to have the team bond and unite, which he feels will ultimately lead to better results in the pool. I think my No. 1 expectation is that this team continue to grow as a cohesive unit, and as supporters of each other, having pride in the University of Nebraska and the swimming and diving program, and to really look to each other to take this team to a higher level. That s my No. 1 expectation, and I think there is a great sentiment and foundation in place for that. We expect our girls to work hard and give it their all to get to the next level. The seniors will have strong support underneath them to help them accomplish their goals, as talented junior and sophomore classes return, along with a sizable freshman class that has plenty of potential. The eight-person junior class has made an impact on the Husker team, and could be a bigger factor this season. Jess Andrews, Kelsey Grushecky, Blaine Hoppenrath and Brandie Kavalec combined for 59 top-five finishes last season and eight top-15 finishes at the Big 12 Championships. Rounding out the junior class are Claire Desormey, Julie Giehl, Meredith Matthies and Rachell McClain. Morales expects big things out of the junior class as a whole. They have the potential, just like the senior class, to bring all facets to the table, from a standpoint of skill, accomplishments, work ethic and devotion to the team, Morales said. They ve definitely been a work in progress, but the potential is there. They ve shown it, and we ve seen now halfway through their Nebraska careers that there is that potential, and we re looking to see them continue to blossom. The sophomore class will look to step up after finishing last season strong as freshmen. Among the six sophomores on this year s team are D Arcy Schmidt, the only returning diver from last year s squad, and Caroline Shea, last season s Nebraska Freshman of the Year. Both came on strong late in the season, and will hope to carry the momentum over to Bobbi Balogh, Bailey Bolinske, Mailene Leslie and Riley Seidel round out the sophomore class. I think last year gave us a good glimpse of what this class can do, and I think there were a lot of positives from last year, Morales said. But I think if we re going to continue to grow as a team, we need the sophomore class to continue to grow. I think when you re talking about any sophomore class, really that s the case. Rarely do you have a freshman class come in and dominate. It s usually a learning process. They re all kind of adjusting to the program, and they re opening up their minds to what is possible. This class really has that potential to grow from that first year. Joining the 21 returning letterwinners are 15 freshmen, who make up the biggest freshman class I think my No. Morales and the coaching staff have had at Nebraska. While there are still certainly a lot of unknowns with the freshman class, Morales and the rest of the staff expect big things from them. It s hard to say at this point, but so far we really like what we see, Morales said. We re excited about the potential in the class size, and there s potential to have some really good contributions to the team. We like their mindset and the energy they bring to the team, so we re looking forward to seeing what they can do this season. With 21 returning letterwinners and 15 newcomers, NU s team has experience and talent, as well as plenty of young swimmers with a lot of potential. I don t think as a team anybody is satisfied with what we ve done the last couple years, Morales said. On an individual level, we ve got some really talented and dedicated athletes who want to achieve at the highest level, and we want to get back to the NCAA Championships. With one, two, three swimmers, relays, whatever it takes, we have the ability here to get there. It s going to be a challenge, but I want to see that happen with some people on this team. Nebraska s schedule will see the Huskers host five duals as well as the third annual Husker Invitational. The Huskers only had two home duals last season and will be looking forward to having more meets in front of a home crowd this year. Nebraska is 15-7 in the last five years at the Devaney Natatorium. NU will have road meets at Kansas and Missouri and will travel to Columbia, Mo., twice more during the season for the Big 12 Relays (Oct. 16) and the Missouri Invitational (Dec. 3-5). The team will wrap up its regular season at the Big 12 Championships on Feb in College Station, Texas. The Huskers will also host the third annual Husker Invitational. NU finished first in the first annual Invite in and finished fifth in last year s Invite. Around five other teams are expected to join the Huskers for the four-day meet, running from Nov Head Coach Pablo Morales is entering his ninth season with the Nebraska swimming and diving program. nebraska swimming & diving huskers.com
