1 Denver, CO October 18-20, 2017 Benefits of Using NSF Certified Test Methods Maris Jaunakais Maris Jaunakais is a successful speaker with numerous awards and published works. He has a degree in Chemistry from Lincoln University and a master s degree in Analytical Chemistry from Temple University. His began his career over 40 years ago as a Toxicological Chemist and worked his way to Forensic Science Laboratory Director for the Federal Government. He is currently a consultant with Industrial Test Systems (ITS), a manufacturer of advanced water quality testing in Rock Hill, SC. His leadership has shaped ITS into a global leader. As we enter into the 21st century of water testing, Mr. Jaunakais and Industrial Test Systems continue to introduce revolutionary new products which will shape the way water testing is performed. Abstract This presentation will highlight the benefits of using NSF certified test methods in the pool testing market and how and why to implement them. Mr. Jaunakais will illustrate the importance of having NSF certified test methods available will help with the quality of testing and uniform results. He will also introduce why it is important to have a regular water quality testing schedule and highlight the different NSF test methods and equipment available. ANNEX TO MAHC WATER QUALITY TESTING DEVICE & KITS MAHC guidelines require Water Quality Testing Devices (WQTD) be NSF/ANSI 50 certified WQTD means a product designed to measure the level of a parameter in water. A WQTD includes a device or method to provide a visual indication of a parameter level, & may include one or more reagents & accessory items. WQTDS & kits shall be listed & labeled to NSF/ANSI 50 by an ANSI-accredited certification organization. BASIC POOL/SPA TEST METHODS Digital readers, ph & TDS testers Photometers & reagents Drop Counting Titration Visual Comparator tests Test Strips
6 NSF CERTIFICATION ORGANIZATION NSF (National Sanitation Foundation) is a product testing, inspection & certification organization based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Certifies MAHC Water Quality Test Devices NSF laboratories are ISO certified (testing & calibration) Performs independent certification of various pool testing methods Stringent approval method NSF/ANSI STANDARD 50 CERTIFICATION NSF/ANSI STANDARD 50 CERTIFICATION PROCESS Manufacturing facility site visit & audit Full evaluation on Two Testing Devices & on 2 Separate Days at two temperatures: 80 ± 2 F (Pool) & 102 ± 2 F (Spa) Accuracy: At each parameter tested the average of WQTD analyses (i.e. 3 readings of each solution) at both temperatures shall meet accuracy requirements (i.e. L1, L2, L3) Repeatability: Average variance in results for each unit of a WQTD shall meet repeatability requirements, based on claimed accuracy level of WQTD Reproducibility (Precision): Difference between average results for each test sample shall meet reproducibility requirements, based on claimed accuracy level of WQTD.
