3 The University of Kansas swimming and diving team is fresh off a season where the team compiled a 9-3 mark in dual meets and finished third at the Big 12 Championships. The team has great expectations entering the season. The Jayhawks have a strong roster, returning 19 letterwinners among six seniors, seven juniors and 10 sophomores. Nine freshman join the team for what should be an exciting year for Kansas Swimming and Diving. We are on a mission this season, head swimming coach Clark Campbell said. This team has goals as well as individual goals. We will be prepared to go out and achieve them throughout the season. Freestyle - Sprint One of the most decorated swimmers in KU history, senior Amy Gruber will lead the Jayhawks in the freestyle sprint events. Gruber, a 2004 First Team All-Big 12 selection, qualified to compete in the NCAA Championships in the 50 and 100 freestyle events the past two seasons. Seniors Aly Colver and Jackie Krueger will be looked to this season to fill the void left by graduating seniors. Both Colver and Krueger finished in the top-16 at the Big 12 Championships last season. Sophomore Kristi Hansen will add depth to the Jayhawks in the freestyle events. Freshman Anne Liggett, a former Oregon state champion, will provide an immediate spark for Kansas, along with freshman Beth Roach. The freestyle event is Amy s best stroke. She has high goals entering her final season and following a good summer season, there should be nothing holding her back, said Campbell. Aly and Jackie are ready to step up and play a vital role in the freestyle events. Freestyle - Middle Distance Gruber, Colver and junior Gina Gnatzig will lead Kansas in these events. The trio of swimmers each recorded times in the 200 freestyle event that qualified them for the NCAA Championship consideration in Adding depth to the freestyle middle distance events is sophomore Tricia Tindall. Joining her is freshman Terri Schramka, a Wisconsin state champion in high school. Freestyle - Distance Sophomore Lia Pogioli serves as the only returning freestyle distance swimmer for the Jayhawks this season. Pogioli finished in the top-16 in the 1650 freestyle event in the Big 12 Championships last season. Freshman Lindsay Herre adds depth to the freestyle distance events and hopes for a top-eight finish in the mile at the Big 12 Championships this season. Butterfly Gruber qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 100 butterfly last season and junior Lindsey Urbatchka finished in the top-15 at the Big 12 Championships. Senior Becca Zarazan will be the returning leader in the 200 butterfly event. She finished in the top-12 at the Big 12 Championships last season. Junior Emily Rusch is gearing up for a good season in the butterfly event, a new focus for her. Sophomores Emily Knopp and Kristin Tirabassi will also be competitive in the butterfly. Knopp scored big points for the team last season and Tirabassi is also looking forward to contributing at the Big 12 Championships. Freshmen Allie Rubino and Sierra Slavin will both be contenders in the butterfly sprint events. We have some strong butterfliers returning this season, Campbell said. Not only do we have depth returning in the butterfly, but we also have strong newcomers in Allie and Sierra. Backstroke Leading the way for the Jayhawks in the backstroke is Gnatzig, the KU record-holder in the 200 event. The Whitewater, Wis., native missed qualifying for the NCAA Championships by.8 seconds in the 200 backstroke event and is hoping to compete at the NCAA Championships this year. Senior Katie Knighton and juniors Megan Boecker and Lindsay Urbatchka will each add depth to the Jayhawk roster in the backstroke Season Outlook KANSAS SWIMMING & DIVING Outlook: We re on a mission Captains Front: Senior Becca Zarazan Back: Seniors Miranda Isaac and Amy Gruber Returning sophomore Jenny Short, a top- 15 finisher in the two backstroke events at the Big 12 Championships. Freshmen Allie Rubino, Terri Schramka and Lauren Bonfe round out the solid backstrokers on the Jayhawk roster. We have a lot of depth and talent in the backstroke event, Campbell said. This will definitely be one of our strongest areas. Breaststroke Senior Miranda Isaac will be a solid returner in both breaststroke events. She finished in sixth place in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke at the Big 12 Championships. Sophomore Hannah Bakke, who finished in the top-eight in the 100 and 200 breaststroke at the Big 12 Championships, will be joined by sophomore Lisa Tilson and freshman Nikki Maples. Tilson and Maples will provide depth to the Jayhawk roster in this area. We have two very solid breaststrokers in Miranda and Hannah, Campbell said. Lisa and Nikki will both gain valuable experience this year. Individual Medley Rusch will be the go-to swimmer in the individual medley. She finished in the top-15 in the 200 IM at the Big 12 Championships. Joining Rusch will be Maples, who is making strides in developing her backstroke. Gruber, Isaac, Gnatzig and freshman Lauren Bonfe will also compete in the IM. We don t have a lot of depth in the IM, Campbell said. But what we lack in depth, we make up for with quality. Diving First year diving head coach Eric Elliott takes over a diving team that is relatively young. However, sophomore Shelby Noonan, the lone qualifier for the NCAA Zone Diving meet last season, will provide plenty of experience. Noonan will once again be one of the top scorers for the team and will look to have another strong season on the boards. Joining Noonan will be juniors Robyn Karlage and Casey Topol, who will both add experience and depth to the diving roster. Karlage has been diving well entering the season, while big things will be expected of Topol, one of the leaders of the diving team. Jenny Roberts, a redshirt freshman, will compete in her first year and will contribute valuable points. Freshman Bryn Conley, a strong high school diver, rounds out the diving roster. We want to do well in all of our duals and work to build up to the conference and NCAA championships, Elliott said. Starting the season with a new coach is different and we have had to make plenty of adjustments, but we are excited for this season. 3

22 KANSAS SWIMMING & DIVING Lew Perkins Athletics Director Lew Perkins' first year as KU's director of athletics was marked by grand success - both on the field of play and in the classroom. Consider the following: 86 Jayhawk student-athletes earned academic All-Big 12 honors. Four student-athletes were named to academic All-America teams. 54 Jayhawk student-athletes were named to All-Big 12 teams. Six University of Kansas student-athletes earned All-America honors. 226 (55 percent) of KU's student-athletes were named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll (3.0 grade-point average or better) during the Spring of of those student-athletes earned perfect 4.0 GPA's. In addition, KU's student-athletes recorded their best academic performance in department history last spring, boasting a 2.98 overall GPA. Several teams achieved their highest GPA's ever, including swimming and diving (3.39), rowing (3.39) and soccer (3.28). On the playing field, the results were just as outstanding. Head coach Mark Mangino, in only his second season, guided his muchimproved football team to the 2003 Mazda Tangerine Bowl. New head coach Bill Self took over a men's basketball team that had lost two NBA lottery picks and produced an Elite Eight appearance in the 2004 NCAA tournament. The KU's women's soccer team advanced all the way to the 2003 NCAA tournament Sweet 16, and the women's volleyball team made its first-ever NCAA tournament appearance, beating perennial national power Long Beach State to reach the second round of the 2003 tournament. In addition, alumni and friends have made donations to the KU Williams Educational Fund at record levels. Those donations will assist in one of Perkins' primary goals - to ensure that student-athletes on all of KU's teams get the support they need to be competitive not only athletically in the Big 12 Conference and nationally, but also in the classroom. Success is nothing new to Lew 22 Kansas Athletics Administration Perkins. Prior to being named KU's athletics director in June 2003, he achieved unprecedented success as director of athletics at the University of Connecticut for 13 years. He was instrumental in guiding UConn athletics to impressive growth, both athletically and academically. During his tenure, UConn won six NCAA National Championships, including four in women's basketball, and one each in men's basketball and men's soccer. In his 13 years a total of 61 Husky squads earned NCAA Division I Tournament berths, and UConn claimed 64 Big East Conference regular season and tournament championships. In addition, Perkins worked tirelessly to upgrade UConn's football program to NCAA Division I-A status. He was instrumental in the State of Connecticut's decision to provide funding for the construction of a $90-million, 40,000-seat stadium, which opened in August of The Huskies began competing in the Big East Football Conference in 2004, making UConn the only school ever to leap from Division I-AA to a BCS Conference. Under Perkins' direction, UConn's athletic fund-raising reached the $10 million mark in each of his last four years there. The UConn Club reached new heights with more than 5,300 members, and Connecticut's expanding endowed scholarship program also continued to grow. Perkins was honored in 2000 as the inaugural winner of the National Athletic Director of the Year Award as selected by Street & Smith's Sports Business Journal, in conjunction with the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA). Perkins serves on the NCAA Basketball Issues Committee, and recently completed terms on two other prestigious NCAA committees, the Championships & Competition Cabinet and the Bowl Certification Committee. In 2004 CBS Sportsline.com named him one of the 50 most influential people in college football. Perkins grew up in Massachusetts and was a highly recruited high-school basketball star. He played college basketball at the University of Iowa ( ) for Hall of Fame coach and KU graduate Ralph Miller. From 1969 to 1980, Perkins served as Director of Athletics at the University of South Carolina at Aiken, as that institution grew from a junior college to a fouryear institution. He also was head basketball coach at USC- Aiken from He received his master's degree in education in 1975 from the University of South Carolina. From , Perkins served as Associate Director of Athletics at the University of Pennsylvania. He then served as Director of Athletics at Wichita State University from and at the University of Maryland from He was inducted into his high school Hall of Fame in 1989, and was honored in his hometown of Chelsea, Mass. Perkins' wife, Gwen, earned both an undergraduate degree from Iowa and a master's degree in education from the University of South Carolina. She served in public education for the East Hartford (Conn.) School System. Lew and Gwen have two daughters -- Amy Macneill, a 1993 graduate of the University of Maryland (married to Brandon Macneill), and Holly Halligan, a 1996 graduate of the University of Connecticut (married to Tom Halligan). They are the proud grandparents of one granddaughter, Caroline Macneill, born in Pam Byrn Administrative Assistant Pam Byrn has worked at the University of Kansas for 32 years, 23 of those in the athletic department. 23 Kansas Swimming & Diving Athletic Facilities KANSAS SWIMMING & DIVING Anderson Family Strength and Conditioning Center Robinson Natatorium Robinson Natatorium headlines tradition-rich facilities that have helped lift Kansas to national swimming and diving prominence. Opened in 1966, Robinson Natatorium includes a six-lane, 25-yard pool and an eight-lane, 25-meter pool in addition to one-meter, three-meter and platform diving resources. In the infancy of the Kansas swimming and diving program, the Jayhawks used a pool at old Robinson Gymnasium for practice and competition. An expansion program lengthened the pool to 20 yards during the season, however it was still not large enough to accommodate a crowd without the splashing caused by the swimmers. This problem was solved in 1966 with the opening of a pool in the new Robinson Gymnasium. Measuring 25 yards by 25 yards, the six-lane pool included one-meter and three-meter boards. A 1980 expansion added an eight-lane, 25-meter pool for practice purposes. In 1985, the facility was upgraded to include two one-meter and two three-meter diving boards. During the season, a five-meter platform was added, made possible in part by donations from the program s alumni, parents and friends. We have lots of water to practice in, coach Clark Campbell said. We are able to train at the highest level. Kansas is one of the only few schools with a free standing 25M pool. Championship meets are beginning to use that type of pool, so it is a huge competitive advantage to train everyday in a championship situation. Robinson has twice hosted the Big Eight Conference Championships. In 1984, both the men s and women s conference meets were held in Lawrence, with the Jayhawk women capturing their tenth consecutive Big Eight title. Robinson also played host to conference rivals in 1991, as the women s championships came to KU. The Jayhawks also have access to another training facility in town at Lawrence Freestate High School s brand new 50-meter indoor pool. The Anderson Family Strenth and Conditioning Center opened in March The state-of-the-art facility features an array of free weights, exercise machines and workout areas throughout its 42,000 square feet of area. The center is the training facility for all University of Kansas athletic teams. The swimming and diving team uses the center extensively for its dry-land training. Many people do not realize how much dry-land training we do as a swimming and diving team, head coach Clark Campbell said. Being able to train in a facility such as the Anderson Center is one of the greatest privileges we have as a team here at the University of Kansas. 23

24 KANSAS SWIMMING & DIVING University of Kansas A Comprehensive Public University Opened in 1866, the University of Kansas is a comprehensive educational and research institution with 28,849 students and more than 2,200 faculty members. KU includes the main campus in Lawrence; the Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan.; the Edwards Campus in Overland Park; a clinical campus of the School of Medicine in Wichita; and educational and research facilities throughout the state. Campuses Considered one of the most beautiful campuses in the nation, KU's main campus occupies 1,000 acres on and around Mount Oread in Lawrence, a community of 80,000 among the forested hills of eastern Kansas. The Medical Center occupies 50 acres in nearby metropolitan Kansas City. The Edwards Campus is situated on 38 acres in a suburban Kansas City corridor known for its high-tech manufacturers and laboratories. Colleges reports that KU "has a long and distinguished tradition as one of America's premier universities." Another popular college guidebook, The Fiske Guide to Colleges, for more than a decade has awarded KU a four-star rating for academics, social life and overall quality of university life. Research Research is an integral part of the university's educational activity. During fiscal year 2002, KU faculty secured $243 million in research funding. The ripple effect of that funding is estimated to contribute $900 million to the Kansas economy. KU is one of only 32 public universities to belong to the American Association of Universities, a select group of higher education institutions in the United States and Canada. Members are chosen on the basis of national significance in graduate studies and research. Degrees The largest of the Kansas Regents institutions, KU annually grants one-third of the bachelor's and master's degrees and two-thirds of the doctorates for Regents schools. Culture The Lawrence campus offers a rich cultural life.
