3. Vision & Aims KAL Swim Performance The Vision The expectation for every swimmer to be a better swimmer in the future than they are today, whether that is in 1 day, 1 week, 1 month or 1 year. Every day, thinking about choosing to make World Class decisions, in and out of the pool is an opportunity to become a better swimmer. A bad day, a missed session or anything below 100% commitment is an opportunity missed. Aim Aim of programme: To place swimmers on a pathway to deliver performances at Yorkshire and NER Championships, delivering finalists and medalists at National Senior & Age/Youth and putting swimmers onto English Talent programmes and GB teams. Criteria The criteria is a way of supporting the swimmer through their journey and wherever that takes them, it also gives clarity for coaches and parents in the way that the swimmers are assessed to ensure that the swimmers are in the correct squad for their age and ability. This might take the form of swimmers being relocated from one squad to another to assist in swimmer development. The swimmers pathway might not be in a straight line and might take different twists and turns, please trust us to make the correct decision for your swimmer, we want the right swimmer in the right group to deliver a quality programme. 4. Safeguarding KAL policies and procedures Kirklees Active Leisure have developed an integrated management system for all policy s across all facilities. KAL and BOK also adopt all wave power ASA child safeguarding policies and procedures in line with swim 21 guidance Safeguarding children in club / programmed environment is an integral part of all members activities and is about creating a culture, that provides a safe and happy environment in which children can learn to swim and develop to a level appropriate for their ability. The sport of swimming should be enjoyable and fun, including the competitive aspect at whatever level undertaken, giving the individual concerned a sense of achievement and satisfaction from taking part in the sport. Safeguarding in swimming is based upon the provision of an appropriate environment that is tailored to the needs and requirements of all children. KAL is committed to ensuring that all children who participate in KAL activities should be able to take part in an enjoyable and safe environment and be safeguarded from harm. 6 Parent s Commitment to their Child at KAL Swim Performance. Take an interest in your child s training and progress and be supportive. Be punctual when dropping off and picking up your child to & from coaching and whenever possible stay to watch and support them. If your child is under the age of 8 they must be accompanied by a parent / guardian within the facility. If you are unable to stay at sessions ensure your son / daughter has all the appropriate required equipment. Offer your services to the club. The club will always be looking for volunteers to help run Code of Conduct for Parents Parents are expected to: 1. Complete and return the Medical details requested in the log book as requested and detail any health conditions / concerns relevant to your child. Any changes in the state of your child s health should be reported to the coach prior to coaching sessions. Ensure that KAL have up to date contact details for you and any alternative person. 2. 7 5. KAL Swim Performance Criteria & Programmes Criteria Break Down 1. Attendance 2. Technique 3. Training Ethos 4. Racing Abilities 5. Log Books 6. Discipline 7. Entry & Progression Requirements 1. Attendance Swimmers improve from three main aspects; Technique, Growth and training. Young swimmers will generally improve from growth and Technique alone but to perform the skills required swimmers should attend all recommended sessions, at youth age attending sessions becomes a vital part of training and improvement, having a huge effect on performance, strength, skill & fitness. As well as being used as a recovery aid. Swimmers not attending will miss out on these areas leading to a decline in performance. Attendance will be monitored on a weekly basis. KAL Swim Performance is continually reviewing to improve on quality. In September 2014 the programme introduced Learn 2 which is a software product which supports the scheme management. Learn 2 measures attendance allowing KAL to monitor levels for all participants. KSP coaches will now be monitoring this along with other criteria as part of the continual improvements. 2. Criteria Review Process Criteria outcomes will be reviewed throughout this process including, completion of log books, attendance, application of skill and attitude, respect for coaches and other athletes in the programme & respect for the facilities used. If for any reason the athlete is unable to achieve the criteria i.e. illness / injury this must be communicated to the Lead Coach and recorded in the Log Book as failure to do so will result in the review process Stage 1. Process Stage 1 KSP Lead Coach will communicate by either e mail / letter sent as a reminder of the squad criteria. Improvements monitored over a 2 week period. Stage 2 A letter will be set to the home address in relation to the criteria with clear outcomes to achieve, swimmers will be monitored on these outcomes for the following 4 weeks. 4 Weeks Review Stage 3 The implementation of Stage 3 will be if insufficient levels of improvement have been observed over the 4 weeks. A meeting with the Lead Coach and Head Coach (if appropriate) to discuss the lack of improvement and a potential exit strategy from the scheme Any athlete that is included in the process more than once in a year will automatically move to Stage 3. KAL Swim Performance Handbook - October

3. Technique Technique is a swimmers most important requirement to being successful. Technique takes focus and concentration, having a sound foundation and understanding of technique allows the athlete to build in the necessary intensity and volume that is required later on in a swimmers career without skill levels breaking down. 4. Training Ethos Training is extremely important to a swimmers development as at certain periods of development they will be more receptive to different types of training. A swimmers ability to train well will have a direct impact as to whether they capitalize on that area of progression. A swimmers ability to train will be evaluated on: Regional Performance/Junior Performance 1-2: These squads are important and attendance is crucial to develop, Work Ethic, Concentration, Skill acquisition, communication, and ability to train at a required pace or volume with-out breaking down in skill levels. Senior and National Performance: Building on the skills learnt in the Junior Performance squads, as having these skills Youth level swimmers and above need to have the right mental attitude and the will to want to train to improve. Sessions will be challenging but in order for performance to increase, these sessions must be met with the right mental attitude to gain the maximum benefit. 5. Racing Abilities In swimming the ability to race is extremely important, learning tactics, pacing and a different approach to racing and competing with professional standards and developing good sportsmanship skills is essential to equip the swimmer with the skills wither they win, lose or have to push themselves just to make finals. As each swimmer goes through the programme racing requirements will become more advanced from showing an enjoyment of racing to performing at National level. KAL Swim Performance Handbook - October

6. Log Books Completing a log book is a very important part of a swimmers education. They allow the swimmer and coach to see a progression in training ability including aspects like pace work or stroke counting as well as being an excellent form of communication between swimmer, coach and parent. Squad JP1 / JP2 RP / NP / SP Masters Identified Use Compulsory - update and submit every 6month for each swimmer. Criteria / Moves the logbook will be used as the communication tool for swimmers / parents & coach. Swimmers identified for moves through criteria or performance review will be requested to complete the log books initial stages of the process. Recommended athletes are recommended to use this tool as part of their personal development. Criteria / Moves the logbook will be used as the communication tool for swimmers / parents & coach. Swimmers identified for moves through criteria or performance review will be requested to complete the log books initial stages of the process. Not required A template log book can be downloaded from 7. Discipline Every swimmer s behavior towards team mates, coaches and staff will be taken into consideration when for changes in squads. Good behavior is quite often the determining factor when the above criteria are able to be achieved. 8. Entry Criteria Be talent spotted at internal event/external event Apply via the Head Coach and be assessed by a coach in one of the sessions Complete trial in appropriate squad for a min of 2 weeks. Progression Criteria Swimmers that would like to be considered for squad movement must be attending a minimum of the recommended attendance list. All session attendance MUST be discussed with the lead coach before any changes can be made, any swimmer not following this procedure will be required to attend a meeting to discuss other options for that swimmer within the programme. Any swimmer that is competing at a weekend event should ensure they train on the Friday before the event (if applicable) to ensure they keep the feel for the water and are kept in the constant routine. KAL Swim Performance Handbook - October

Swimmers should arrive 15 minutes before the start of every session, swimmers arriving late carry the risk of picking up injuries, which in the long term will affect performances and ultimately could affect the swimmers place within the squad. Swimmers must be technically efficient in all the above areas but must hold form in repetition of 200, 400 and 800 or 1500 meters and include 100,200 and 400IM. Swimmers must be able to hold form in Speed, Threshold and Pace sets (Subject to squad all performance). Land based sessions are key to the opening months of the season to develop the swimmers and lay the foundation on which to build, developing swimmers with poor flexibility and core strength could suffer in the gym which may lead them to be removed from these areas until weak or tight areas are improved, this is to prevent injury. The land based work is an essential part of training in the programme. Training is intense so injury prevention exercises must be carried out on a daily basis. KAL Swim Performance Criteria Full Programme work compulsory Land work compulsory Respect other athletes Respect for coaching staff Willingness to learn Punctuality Good Lane Discipline Willingness to support team mates in training sessions and competitions Compete at designated competitions via annual plan published by BOK Parent(s) should volunteer at minimum one BOK internal competition Become a member of BOK (Masters exception) All squad moves will be at the description of the Head Coach Information on joining BOK Swimming Club can be found: KAL Swim Performance Handbook - October

Disability Swimming The great thing about swimming is that it is an inclusive sport that people with a disability can get involved with at every level. Kirklees Swim Academy and BOK deliver a fully inclusive programme and provide opportunities for all from learn to swim to swim performance. Individual assessments will be carried out and the appropriate sessions will be signposted to the swimmer. Classification A number of swimmers have impairments that prevent them from competing against able bodied competitors. These swimmers go through a process called Classification ; the purpose of the classification is that it provides a certificate to ensure that disabled competitors do not get disqualified for performing a stroke incorrectly due to their disability. Functional Classification this process involves a medical test, technical test and observation in competition. Disability Specific Classification Visually impaired Hearing impaired Learning Disability Intellectual Disability Any communications including regarding the KAL Performance Academy contact: KALSwimPerformance@kal.org.uk If you would like to arrange to arrange an appointment with members of staff this must be arranged with the Head Coach, to ensure that we provide the coaches with support we ask that parents only communicate through the Head Coach and not directly with the squad coaches. All selections for the squads will be based on ability and NOT age, it will be a continuous assessment, taking into account factors such as training ability, racing ability, attitude, willingness to change, growth and development, these are just a few of the aspects of the developing swimmer but all aspects will be taken into account when looking at changes in squad numbers. Text Alert & Cancelled Sessions If a session cannot be delivered KAL will endeavor to provide an alternative session, however sometimes sessions may be cancelled at short notice for operational issues which are out of our control. If this happens swimmers will be notified by text alert. Too ensure that correct details are on the system please ensure that membership services (KALMembershipTeam@KAL.org.uk), have your correct details including mobile telephone number. Injuries If a swimmer has an injury, this should be discussed with the lead coach at the earliest opportunity so that programmes can be adjusted to suit the swimmers needs in conjunction with a suitable rehabilitation programme. 17 Complaints, Compliments and Comments Procedure Kirklees Active Leisure has a full customer charter which can be found on the website in the section titled all about us: 6. LONG TERM ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT There are five stages of the LTAD framework: FUNdamental basic movement literacy SwimSkills building technique Training to Train building the engine Training to Compete optimising the engine Training to Win maximising the engine Stage 1: FUNdamentals The FUNdamental stage should be structured and fun. The emphasis is on developing basic movement literacy, and fundamental movement skills. Stage 2: SwimSkills This stage is where young swimmers should learn how to train and develop the skills of their specific sport, and learn the basic technical/tactical skills. Stage 3: Training to Train At this stage there should be an emphasis on aerobic conditioning. This is the stage where there is greater individualisation of fitness and technical training. The focus should still be on training rather than competition, and the training should be predominantly of high volume, low intensity workloads. Stage 4: Training to Compete During the training to compete stage there should be a continued emphasis on physical conditioning, with the focus on maintaining high volume workloads but with increasing intensity. During this stage, training should also focus on developing maximum strength gain through the use of weights. This should be coupled with continued work on core body strength and maintaining suppleness. Stage 5: Training to Win This is the final stage of athletic preparation. The emphasis should be on specialisation and performance enhancement. All of the athletes physical, technical, tactical, mental, and ancillary capacities should now be fully established, with the focus shifting to the optimisation of performance. For more in depth information on the LTAD, please visit or KAL Swim Performance Handbook - October
