4 GENERAL INFORMATION PRICING St John Ambulance is a self-funded, registered charity. Course fees provide revenue to support our volunteer community services. You receive top quality public training at a reasonable price which ensures our mandates of community service and First Aid training for as many people as possible. Course prices include materials, registration and instructional fees. Prices are subject to change without notice. METHOD OF PAYMENT Fees must be paid in advance using cash, Visa, Mastercard or Debit. Advance credit approval must be obtained for corporate invoicing. CERTIFICATION Most First Aid course certificates are valid for three years. Annual CPR / AED training is recommended. CERTIFICATE PORTABILITY Each province and federal department has its own First Aid legislation and specific requirements for Occupational Health and Safety compliance. Where certificate portability is required from one jurisdiction to another, please consult your local St John Centre for further information. CERTIFICATE REPLACEMENT St John Ambulance certificates are numbered and electronically recorded in a centralized national database. Replacement certificates can be obtained in person at any St John Ambulance locations. Please bring photo identification when you pick up your replacement certificate. The fee is $10. CPR STANDARDS All cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) modules and courses are taught to St John Ambulance national standards, which are in accordance with the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) recommendations. CLASS CANCELLATIONS St John Ambulance reserves the right to cancel classes that do not reach the minimum enrollment requirements or for extenuating circumstances. Every effort will be made to notify all registrants in a timely manner prior to the class start date. Fees for cancelled classes will be refunded in full or applied to another course upon request. STUDENT WITHDRAWALS Students may formally withdraw from a class by contacting a St John Ambulance Centre prior to the class start date by telephone, fax, or . Students and companies are held responsible for courses in which they are registered until they formally withdraw from the course(s) within the refund deadline dates. Please note: Non-attendance does not constitute a formal withdrawal. REFUNDS Students are eligible for a 100% refund less an administrative charge of $25 if they formally withdraw at least two business days prior to the class start date with the exception of Medical First Responder, Advanced First Aid, EMR and Instructor Development courses, for which no refunds will be provided for student withdrawals with less than three (3) weeks notice of class start date. Individuals who withdraw from the Medical First Responder, Advanced First Aid or the Instructor Development Program prior to the three week close date are eligible for a full refund less the $25 administration fee. Individuals who withdraw from the EMR course prior to the three week close date will receive a full refund less the administration fee and the cost of the course books which cannot be returned once purchased. The withdrawal refund may be applied to another course upon request. Students may transfer to another course right up to the beginning of the original course. Once the original course begins and no transfer request has been made, it is considered a no show with the exception of AFA and EMR (same as refund). For private group course registrations, companies and groups are eligible for a 100% refund less the administrative charge of $150 if they formally withdraw at least two business days prior to the class start date with the exception of the Medical First Responder, Advanced First Aid, EMR and Instructor Development courses, for which no refunds will be provided for student withdrawals with less than three weeks notice of class start date. For the EMR program the cost of the books will be added to the $150 administration fee for withdrawals. The refund may be applied to another course upon request. Refunds will not be provided to students who do not withdraw within the deadlines mentioned above. 5 STUDENT INFORMATION To ensure a safe and comfortable learning environment for everyone while taking a course, please note: 1. Verbal or physical abuse, profanity or harassment from a student will not be tolerated and will result in immediate removal from class and no refund will be given. Companies who have sent and paid for employees to attend class will be notified. 2. If there is need for First Aid to be administered during class, the class instructor will be the designated First Aider. First Aid kits are located at the front reception desk and in the hallways. 3. We cannot train an individual while they are under the influence of alcohol or drugs. If a student is under the influence, they will be removed from class and no refund will be given. Companies who have sent and paid for that employee to attend class will be notified. 4. If there is a fire in the building, students are asked to please follow the evacuation plan posted in each classroom and note the muster point. Fire extinguishers are located throughout the building and at the front reception desk. Please note these locations. 5. Students are asked to turn off cells phones or have them on vibrate mode once class commences. If a student must take a call, we ask they leave the room. 6. St. John Ambulance is not responsible for parking tickets received while attending classes. Please park in the designated spaces and observe all signage. If the parking lot is full, please park off site and observe all signage. 7. The written and practical exercises are both mandatory for certification. The instructor is responsible for evaluating the practical skills performed by the students. Certificates will not be issued to students who choose to not complete the required exam and / or practical exercises. 8. There is no smoking inside St John Ambulance buildings. Smoking will only be permitted in designated smoking areas outside of our building. 9. We encourage students to wear comfortable clothing, be physically capable of completing practical exercises, and be respectful of others which includes refraining from wearing scented products and, if experiencing obvious signs of a communicable illness, please transfer to a class a few days later. Topics include: CPR and choking for adults, shock and unconsciousness, severe bleeding, head & spinal injuries, major medical conditions, and AED training and certification. Standard First Aid - CPR C & AED $145 TWO DAY This two-day course covers all the skills in Emergency First Aid plus first aid for other injuries and illnesses including head and spinal injuries, fractures of the upper and lower limbs. This challenge is open to those who have a current Standard First Aid certificate from an Alberta OH&S approved program -- with Level A or C CPR and with or without AED. If the certificate is from out-of-province then a full course must be taken. The recertification is intended for those who use their First Aid skills on a regular basis and are able to demonstrate their competency in all required skill areas. 7 Enhanced Standard First Aid $210 THREE DAY This comprehensive 3-day course is for those requiring more in-depth first aid training, is a pre-requisite for the SJA Instructor Development Program, and is the required pre-requisite for the EMR Program. The course covers all the components in the Standard First Aid course plus the additional electives included in the Student Reference Guide. AED certification and Level C CPR certification (Adult, Child, Infant and 2-rescuer resuscitation) is also included. First Aid in Child Care Recertification (challenge) $125 ONE DAY This recertification is for those who hold a current certificate in First Aid in Child Care. This challenge includes a review of essential skills, information update, and skills testing. It also includes Level C CPR recertification (Adult, Child, Infant and 2-rescuer resuscitation) and AED. Unsuccesful candidates will be required to take a full course at their cost: no refunds or re-tests. Standard First Aid - HCP CPR $160 TWO DAY This course is intended for Health Care Providers and includes all the skills in Emergency First Aid plus first aid for other injuries and illnesses, including head and spinal injuries, fractures of the upper and lower limbs, and the Health Care Provider (HCP) level of CPR and AED. Min. age: 16 years Alberta/BC Certificate Portability Application and Registration fee is $25. Under the Trade, Investment, and Labour Mobility Agreement (TILMA) between Alberta and British Columbia, a current Alberta certificate in Emergency, Standard or Enhanced First Aid Certification issued by an Alberta Approved First Aid Training Agency will be recognized in British Columbia. Alberta workers moving to BC or temporarily working in BC and requiring a BC certificate must apply in person to an Approved Training Agency in BC or an Alberta St. John Ambulance Centre for an out-of-jurisdiction certificate by producing their valid Alberta certificate and photo ID. An orientation package to WorkSafe BC requirements will be provided to applicants at the time of application. Min. age: 16 Workers moving from BC to Alberta must have a valid BC certificate and once in Alberta, receive an orientation from their employer on Alberta First Aid requirements. Alberta Work Safe bulletins which include the information required may be downloaded from the Alberta Government web site: No additional certificate is required. The BC certificate is recognized until the expiry date. Once expired a full course must be taken in Alberta. First Aid in Child Care $125 TWO DAY This two-day course is designed for professional child care workers, but great for parents and all caregivers. This course includes emergency life saving skills and first aid topics with a focus on children. The course includes Level C CPR (adult, infant, child and 2-rescuer resuscitation) and AED. Min. age: 16 years First Aid Certificates do expire and the expiry date is on the certificate. In some health professions, annual CPR training is a requirement. Please check CPR requirements in your workplace. Wilderness First Aid Level I, II, or III $85, $150, $225 1,2 or 3 DAYS This course trains participants to provide care to the sick and injured in remote settings and is appropriate for those working in, or traveling to, remote areas where immediate emergency medical services are difficult to obtain. There are three levels of Wilderness First Aid skills training that range from basic to advanced levels. The focus of the course is to adapt First Aid skills as needed, based on availability of supplies, the environment, and additional factors encountered in a remote setting. This course is intended to compliment wilderness survival training and does not replace it. CPR COURSES CPR Level A - AED $55 ONE HALF DAY In this course, students will learn to activate Emergency Medical Services, provide assistance to an adult whose heart has stopped or who is choking, and learn to recognize signs and symptoms of stroke. This course also includes AED certification. CPR Level C - AED $95 ONE DAY In this course, students will learn to activate Emergency Medical Services, provide assistance to an adult, child, or infant whose heart has stopped or who is choking, learn to recognize signs and symptoms of stroke, and learn 2-rescuer CPR. This course also includes AED certification. CPR Level C - AED Recertification (challenge) $60 ONE HALF DAY This is for current CPR certificate holders who wish to renew their CPR and AED certification. 8 COURSE LISTINGS, PRICES & DESCRIPTIONS 2015 Health Care Provider (HCP) CPR $100 ONE DAY HCP CPR is for individuals who are working or plan to be working in the Health Care field and require the Health Care Provider level of CPR. The course includes all CPR skills plus advanced skills such as artificial respiration and use of bag valve masks and AEDs. Min. age: 16 years Health Care Provider (HCP) CPR Recertification (Challenge) $65 ONE HALF DAY This course is for individuals who have a current HCP Level CPR certificate and wish to recertify their skills. Min. age: 16 years ADVANCED LEVEL COURSES Medical First Responder (MFR) $ HOURS This 40 hour course exceeds Standard First Aid content and covers topics including, HCP CPR, AED, oxygen administration, trauma and medical emergencies, spinal motion restriction, and basic anatomy and physiology. This course is ideal for Volunteer Fire Departments and those needing additional First Aid knowledge and skills. Approximately 12 hours of pre-course work is required in advance of the course start date and is in addition to the scheduled class time. Note: This course is not equivalent to Advanced First Aid (OHS approved 80 hour course) or the EMR Program (120 hour course that meets EMR registration requirements for the Alberta College of Paramedics). Minimum age: 16 years. Pre-requisite: Standard First Aid Level C CPR current within 1 year of course date, issued from any Alberta Workplace Health & Safety recognized training agency. Medical First Responder (MFR) Recertification $ HOURS This couse is designed for individuals who require recertification of their MFR Advanced Level 1 certification. Essential skills are reviewed along with any changes in protocol or scope of practice. To be eligible for MFR Advanced Level 1 certification, the student s last course must have been a complete MFR course. Minimum age: 16 years. Pre-requisite: MFR Advanced Level 1 certification current within 1 year of course date. Advanced First Aid (AFA) $ HOURS This 80-hour course provides a more in-depth coverage of basic First Aid and also includes triage, rescue, advanced packaging, oxygen administration, and AED certification. It is ideal for workplace first aiders and response teams requiring a higher level of training and First Aiders and response teams requiring a higher level of training and meets OH&S requirements for Advanced First Aid. Minimum age: 16 years. Pre-requisite: Standard First Aid current within 1 year from any Alberta Workplace Health & Safety recognized training agency. Advanced First Aid Recertification $ HOURS This course is designed for individuals who require recertification of their Advanced First Aid certificate. Essential skills are reviewed along with any changes in protocol or scope of practice. To be eligible for Advanced First Aid recertification the student s last course must have been a complete AFA course. Min. age: 16 years Pre-requisite: Current SJA Advanced First Aid certificate. Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) $ HOURS This 120-hour course provides advanced level knowledge and skills to prepare students for the pre-hospital emergency care field. This course is approved by the Alberta College of Paramedics and meets the requirement for registration and examination at the EMR level. Approximately 100 hours of pre-course study is required prior to the class start date and is in addition to the scheduled class time. Minimum age: 18 years. Pre-requisite: Enhanced Standard First Aid or equivalent current within 6 months. Accepted equivalency is a two day SFA Level C CPR with AED and AR from a nationally recognized training agency (Red Cross, Ski Patrol, Lifesaving, Heart & Stroke, or other SJA Councils). Certification Length: N/A. Course completion training card only. Students are required to register with the Alberta College of Paramedics and successfully complete the Provincial EMR exam for certification. Emergency Medical Responder Refresher $ HOURS This 27-hour course is designed for individuals who require a refresher of their EMR training to register with the Alberta College of Paramedics. Essential skills are reviewed and tested along with any changes in protocols or scope of practice. Min. age: 18 years. NOTE this course is only available in and. Pre-requisite: Evidence of current EMR Training from a recognized Alberta College of Paramedics (ACP) accredited training agency for EMR refresher. Certification Length: N/A. Course completion training card only. Instructor Development Program $ HOURS The IDP Program prepares participants to become nationally qualified St. John Ambulance First Aid and CPR Instructors. This 40-hour course is comprised of three modules: 1) Instructor Development - includes the application of adult learning principles, presentation skills, training strategies, coaching skills, evaluation techniques, and demonstration skills; 2) Administration, Policies & Procedures; and 3) Curriculum Orientation. Min. age: 18 years Upon successful completion of the course, candidates are required to team-teach and be monitored for certification as a St. John Ambulance Instructor and to qualify for instructor licensing by Alberta Council. The certificate is valid for three years. Pre-requisites: St. John Ambulance s Enhanced Standard First Aid certificate, completed within 6 months of course start date. 9 WORKPLACE SAFETY COURSES Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) $33 WHMIS online at WHMIS meets federal general requirements and provides participants with information on hazardous materials used in the workplace. This course includes discussion about controlled products, workplace labeling, material safety data sheets and employee education. Min. age: 12 years Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) $34.95 TDG online at TDG meets provincial road requirements and includes classification, identification and emergency response planning plus information on bulk transportation of hazardous waste. Min. age: 16 years H2S Alive (Hydrogen Sulphide) $170 ONE DAY H2S Alive is intended for anyone working in an area where hydrogen sulphide may be present. Learn the properties of this poisonous gas, how to protect yourself from coming into contact with it, and what to do in emergencies. Students will also learn all levels of CPR, the use of an AED, moving and transporting casualties, airway management, and knowledge in topics including anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, and communications.. Min. age: 16 years COMMUNITY & RECREATION Babysitting Basics $50 ONE DAY This course is intended for youths 11 years of age and older who want to look after infants and young children. Participants will learn basic skills which will prepare them to deal with emergency situations plus general principles of caring for infants and young children. Lifesaver $30 UP TO ONE HALF DAY The Lifesaver course is a customized, non-certified mini course which introduces participants to basic First Aid principles and lifesaving skills. Participants will learn to recognize when help is needed and how to get it. We Can Help Too FREE to all Grade 3 students in Alberta We Can Help Too is a modular interactive program intended for youth between 7 and 10 years of age and is led by a school teacher or community facilitator. This program provides youth with an introduction to basic First Aid and safety skills and basic injury prevention messages. Teachers call your local St. John Training Centre for more information or check Child Safety Seat Technician Training $125 TWO DAYS This course provides training to become a certified technician who can provide information and assistance to parents, caregivers, and others in the correct installation of child safety seats in vehicles and in child passenger safety. Topics include injury prevention and general occupant and vehicle restraint information, regulations, and specific restraint systems. Certification period: 3 years. Min. age: 16 years. Child Safety Seat Technician Training Recertification $125 ONE HALF DAY This half day class is designed to recertify Technicians whose certificate is due to expire or has expired within six months of the course date. It is intended for those technicians who have remained actively involved in child safety seat activities. Technicians will be provided with updates in information but are expected to have the base knowledge and skills. Child Safety Seat Information Session FREE TWO - THREE HOURS At selected SJA Centres, this FREE information session is intended to provide parents and caregivers information on how to correctly install a child safety seat and to transport children safely in a vehicle. It also provides an overview of the law in Alberta regarding occupant restraints and is taught by trained volunteers through the Community Services department of St John. 10 FAQ S 1. What is the difference between Emergency First Aid with Level A CPR and Standard First Aid with Level C CPR? Emergency First Aid with Level A CPR is the basic First Aid course (1 day). It covers scene survey, severe bleeding, burns, eye injuries, medical conditions, CPR for adults and Automated External Defibrillation (AED). Standard First Aid with Level C CPR (2 days) goes over everything the Emergency class does as well as secondary survey, bone & joint injuries, chest wounds, wound care, hot & cold injuries (heat stroke, hypothermia, etc) and CPR for adults, children, and infants, as well as two rescuer CPR and AED. 2. How do I get a replacement certificate? You can drop in to any St John Ambulance location across Alberta with photo ID. There is a $10.00 fee. 3. I d like to recertify my First Aid but it expired last week. Can I still register? If your certificate has expired, you would have to enroll in a full course. 4. I d like to recertify my First Aid but I got it through Red Cross last time. Can I still register? As long as your certificate is still valid, you can register into a St John Ambulance recertification course providing that the original course was taken through an approved vendor. You will be required to show a copy of your current certificate as verification of current training. 5. I have an Alberta First Aid certificate but want to work in BC. How can I do this? Once you have completed your First Aid training, come to the front desk to apply for the BC Out of Jurisdiction certificate for $25. This ticket, along with your current First Aid certificate enables you to work in Alberta and BC. NOTE this only applies to Emergency, Standard and Enhanced level First Aid courses. 6. Can I pay by cheque for my First Aid course? St. John Ambulance only accepts company cheques. Personal registrations may be paid by credit, debit or cash. 7. My school requires me to have Heart & Stroke HCP CPR. Will SJA HCP be accepted? Some businesses/schools require certificates from specific First Aid providers. Students wishing to register must enroll in person so that they may receive books required for pre-study. There is also paperwork to be filled out for cancellation/transfer policies. Registrations must be complete by the closing date (three weeks prior to class start date) to ensure enough time for 100 hours of pre-study. 9. I need to register some employees from my company. How do I register them? You will be required to fill out a Company Registration Form which can be found online at Company-Registration-Forms.aspx You can fax or scanned form - the reply address is on the forms. **Please note that all cancellations and transfers from companies must be submitted in writing. Administration fees apply. 10. My company needs to certify between 7-18 employees at one time. What s my best option? You may want to consider a private class. It consists of two components: core course and post course. 20 DEDICATED TO COMMUNITY SERVICE Funds from St John First Aid Training are put back into your community through a variety of volunteer programs ranging from volunteers who provide First Aid at community events, to Instructors teaching parents of newborns how to perform CPR on their babies in intensive care units at a hospital, as well as some of the services highlighted below. Consider becoming a St John volunteer. KEEP UP YOUR FIRST AID SKILLS The St. John Ambulance First Aid Responders provide a range of patient care coverage at events in communities throughout Alberta. You ve probably seen the volunteers at football and hockey games, rodeos, fairs, exhibitions and other events. Volunteer with St John Ambulance Therapy Dog Program You and your dog can bring joy to residents in a variety of settings including hospitals and nursing homes with your scheduled visits. The program is currently available in six St John location in Alberta. Please contact your local SJA Centre for details. As a volunteer you gain valuable First Aid experience, patient care experience, the opportunity to improve your First Aid knowledge, gain leadership, and communication and interpersonal skills. And you make new friends! Call your local centre for details. FREE CHILD SAFETY SEAT INFO SESSIONS The proper use of a child safety seat has been shown to reduce the likelihood of a child being injured or killed in a crash by as much as 75% according to the Alberta Health Services website. At selected SJA Centres, this FREE 2-3 hour information session is intended to provide parents and caregivers information on how to correctly install a child safety seat and to transport children safely in a vehicle. It also provides an overview of the law in Alberta regarding occupant restraints and is taught by trained volunteers through the Community Services department of St John.
