2 St John s Grammar School Secondary School Swimming Carnival 2017 Dear Parents, The 2017 Swimming Carnival will be held on Thursday 23 February at the SA Aquatic and Leisure Centre, Oaklands Park. The day will commence at 10am and finish at 2pm. Students will be transported via School Bus to and from the venue on the day. The Swimming Carnival is treated as a normal compulsory day of School attendance for all the students. There will be 5 different types of events offered on the day: Individual Championship Trophy Events 50 Metre Individual Championship Events (Middle School and Senior School Divisions A & B): Two male and female freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke swimmers from each house participate in these events. There will be a C division for freestyle only. 100 Metre Individual Championship Event: An Open event for the two best male and female freestyle swimmers from each house. Non-Individual Championship Events Freestyle Relays (Middle School and Senior School Divisions A & B): For 4 males and female swimmers from each house over 50 metres. 25 Metre House Relay: An event to encourage non-individual Championship swimmers to get in the pool and have a swim. The event is broken into Middle School and Senior School relay teams. Medley Relay: One male and female team from each house participate in this event, sharing the strokes freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly. Each swimmer completes 50 metres. House Team Events: Fun based activities that encourage mass participation and involve team work to succeed. The carnival is designed so all students have the opportunity to participate and, for some, the opportunity to excel in an array of swimming disciplines. After the success of previous years, we will again be utilising the computer touch pads system at the Aquatic Centre which records the House name, place and time of each individual participant. It will enable everyone to see the results instantly on the big screen and will also allow for yet another smoothly run Carnival. We will be using the 50m Olympic accredited pool which is a consistent depth of 3 metres. Due to this all House Team Events will be modified accordingly. All participants must be confident in this depth of water. Parental involvement and support is a great tradition at St John s Grammar, in the capacity of officials and back-up timekeepers throughout the day. 3 Student Information: St John s Grammar School Secondary School Swimming Carnival 2017 Students will go to Home Group at the normal time and depart School by bus at 9am in readiness for the first event at 10am. Students must travel on their allocated bus. Students will return to School for a 3pm dismissal. Students are to wear their House T-Shirt and P.E. shorts to School. Correct footwear must be worn to and from School (no board shorts or casual clothes are to be worn to School) Thongs may only be worm at the Aquatic Centre. Students are required to bring their own lunch, snacks and drinks. The canteen will be out of bounds on the day. We also request that parents do not access the canteen for their child/children or friend s behalf. It is preferable that all students return to School on the House buses provided. Students who are not returning to School MUST show a diary note to their Home Group Teacher and Head of House before they can leave the Carnival. They must be signed off before departure. No students will be permitted to drive their own cars to the event. The buses will be utilised in line with our duty of care as a School. Thank you for your support and understanding on this matter. Pool Organisation: Students will need to be located in their House grandstands, under the supervision of staff. Students must stay in this area until they are called for their event/s. All 50m events will start from the western end and the 100m and relay events will start at the eastern end. During house events the movable starting beam will be positioned at the 25m mark of the pool, with all events starting from this point. All other pools, spas and saunas at the SA Aquatic and Leisure Centre are out of bounds to all our students and staff. The management of the Aquatic Centre ask the School to prohibit all students using any face/body paint on the day as it can have an effect on the sanitation of their pool. Points Scoring: All students competing will be awarded points for their House, no matter where they finish. The first three placed students/teams in each event will be awarded place ribbons. Swimming participation ribbons will be awarded during Individual Championship events. Championship Events: A School Age Group Championship trophy will be presented to a male and female with the ranked times and places in the 3 championship events in each age group and the Open 100 metre freestyle event.

7 2017 Swimming Carnival Guidelines & Conditions of Entry 1. Individual Championship Events An Individual Championship Event is for the best two swimmers in each House for each stroke for Middle and Senior School. The exception to each Middle and Senior School level is the 100m freestyle which is a single Open event. Swimmers in Championship Events vie for a trophy. This trophy is awarded in age groups and for each gender (U13, U14, U/15, U/16 and OPEN) They also are awarded points for their House. 2. There are four Championship Events: Open 100m freestyle, 50m freestyle, 50m backstroke, 50m breaststroke. Students can enter three championship events. 3. A Championship Swimmer cannot swim in an event out of their school level m Relays: Open 50m Medley Relay: A relay open to the best freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly swimmers from each House. No school level restriction in this event. 50m freestyle relay: A relay for the best four male and best four female freestyle swimmers in each school level from each house. A student can swim in the 50m Medley Relay and the 50m Freestyle relay. A student can swim in a 50m freestyle and a House 25m relay. In the spirit of the day though, students that have not swum a 50m relay should be given the first opportunity. A swimmer cannot swim in a relay out of their school level. 5. A Championship Swimmer can, in addition to swimming in a maximum of three Championship events, swim a Medley Relay and a 50m Freestyle Relay. 6. A student may compete in a maximum of six swimming events. They can nominate from 50m Medley Relay, 50m freestyle relay, House 25m relay and three of the four Championship Events: 100m Open freestyle, 50m freestyle, 50m breaststroke, 50m backstroke m Relays: Middle School. Houses to field two relay teams. Senior School. Houses to field two teams. 8. House Team events: Preference should, where possible, be given to non-swimmers. In the spirit intended for the House Team events, Championship swimmers should not participate unless numbers are an issue. Hard Core is an exception, the more, the merrier! Middle School. 8 Frequently Asked Questions 1. Can a student from any school level swim in the 100m Open Freestyle? Yes. 2. Can a student from any age school level swim the Medley relay? Yes. 3. Can a student who has swum a 25m relay, also swim in the Open 50m Medley relay? Yes. 4. Can a 50m Medley Relay swimmer or a 50m relay swimmer swim in a 25m relay? Yes. In the spirit of the carnival, however, preference must be given to those that have not swum a relay.
