4 Glossary of Swimming Terms When you or your child first start swimming, it can seem like everyone else is speaking a foreign language, so here is a glossary of some common swimming terms. Accredited Meet is a competition where there is a full complement of officials and all the rules of swimming will be applied. Age Group swimmer or competition for under 16s ASA Amateur Swimming Association swimming's governing body Automatic (Electronic) Timing (AOE) electrical equipment designed to measure the elapsed time between the start and finish of a race in each lane. Backstroke flags a line of flags (not bunting!) suspended above the pool 5m from each pool end. Used to help backstroke swimmers judge when to turn. Club Championships MDSC holds the club champs gala annually, usually October/November. These are open to all club members and are an ideal introduction to competitive swimming. They are also the best way for you and us to find out how well you are progressing. Competitive skills starts, turns, streamlining, start and finish speeds - all components of racing. Converted Time a time calculated using tables to compensate for a change of pool length. A time swum in a 25m pool can be converted into an equivalent time for a 50m pool and vice versa. County Championships usually referred to within the club as the Counties. MDSC is affiliated to Shropshire ASA so all swimmers who achieve the qualifying times should take part in these galas held in February/March every year. Times MUST be achieved at licensed meets during the qualifying period (usually since the last day of the previous year's competition) times from MDSC club champs are valid for the Counties. DNC Did Not Compete DNF Did Not Finish DQ disqualified swimmers may be disqualified for several reasons e.g. false start, incorrect stroke, incorrect turn Freestyle in practice freestyle races are always swum as front crawl as this is the fastest stroke, however technically it means any stroke Graded Meet at a Graded Meet a time cap is applied and only those swimmers below the cap are allowed to compete. Some graded meets may have both high end and low end caps. HDW (Heat Declared Winner) only heats are swum, not heats and finals. The swimmer with the fastest heat time in the relevant age group wins the event regardless of which swimmer wins the heat. This seems to be very hard for younger swimmers to understand, but basically they just need to swim as fast as they can! I.M. (Individual Medley) is an event where all four competitive strokes are swum in one event by one swimmer. Order: butterfly - backstroke - breaststroke - frontcrawl. Licensed meets different galas are aimed at different levels of swimmers. Level 1 galas are aimed at the elite swimmers and usually have tough qualifying times, they must be held in a 50m pool. Level 2 galas have slightly easier times and must be held in a 25m pool. Level 3 galas are held in either 25m or 50m pools and are aimed at swimmers who're not so used to competing or who have slower times - Level 3 galas usually have an upper qualifying time as well as a lower qualifying time. Long Course galas swum in a 50m pool times are usually slower than those achieved in a 25m pool Marshalling Area the area where the swimmers meet ahead of their race Medley relay is an event where all four competitive strokes are swum in one event with four swimmers swimming in turns. Each swimmer swims one stroke. Order backstroke breaststroke - butterfly frontcrawl. (Compare to IM) NQT qualifying time for the National Age Group/Youth Championships One start rule swimmers are disqualified if they start before the referee sounds the horn or whistle Open meet gala open to swimmers from any club, within specific age groups. Usually swimmers have to be faster than set qualifying times some meets also have cut-off times which means swimmers have to be no faster than the set time.continued MDSC Newsletter 4

5 Over the top start swimmers stay in the water until the next race has started PB (Personal Best) the best time achieved by a swimmer in a particular event so far. Swimmers may have both short course and long course PBs Qualifying / Consideration time (QT) the time a swimmer must perform to enter a particular meet or gain selection to a certain squad. Recorder the official who records the results Referee the highest ranking official in overall charge of an accredited meet. Short Course galas swum in a 25m pool. Because there are more turns, times are usually faster than those achieved in long course events Speeding Ticket is what a swimmer receives for swimming too fast at a graded meet. Starter the official who starts the race. Stroke judge the official who inspects competitors to determine that the stroke being used is legal. Swim down gentle swimming to relax the muscles after training or competing Timekeeper is an official who operates a stopwatch to record a swimmer s time. Turn Judge is the official who ensures that all turns are completed correctly in a race. Crusader League Round 3 Gala Report Saturday 9 th April, The third round of division 3 of the Crusader League held at Market Drayton Swimming Centre. The timing of the gala was unfortunate being right at the start of the Easter Holidays and quite a few swimmers were away on holiday, additionally Crewe Flyers were unable to attend. With only three teams competing we rattled through all the races and were finished in record time. Special thanks must go to Jude Evans our Crusader Representative who organised and co-ordinated the evening ensuring a smooth and professional operation from start to finish. It was also great to see Debbie Grindrod able to take the role of announcer; nobody does it better and there were some very relieved committee members when she arrived (Sian!)
