1 Becoming a Lifeguard & Swim Instructor leadership Becoming a Lifeguard & Swim Instructor Bronze Medallion & Emergency First Aid Learn lifesaving principles embodied in the (4) components of water-rescue education: judgment, fitness, knowledge, and skill. Rescuers learn tows, carries and release methods in preparation for risky and challenging rescues. Swimmers develop stroke efficiency, complete a 500m timed endurance swim, and learn techniques for managing spinal injuries in shallow water. Training in Emergency First Aid provides general knowledge and practical experience in select aspects of first aid and CPR. Lifesavers also practice CPR techniques for adult and child victims, victim assessment, and first aid for a variety of victim types including bleeding, heart attack and stroke. Prerequisite: Age 13 years+ or Bronze Star. Challenges include an 18 minute 600m swim; shallow and deep water rescues; management of spinal injuries; CPR; and first aid. Successful candidates will be awarded Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross, and Lifesaving Standard First Aid with CPR-C certifications. Prerequisite: Age 13 years+ or Bronze Star. 2 Becoming a Lifeguard & Swim Instructor Bronze Cross & Standard First Aid Bronze Cross offers advanced training, including an introduction to safe supervision in aquatic facilities. The difference between lifesaving and lifeguarding, the principles of emergency procedures and teamwork are emphasized. Lifesavers learn spinal injury and pulseless victim rescues. Standard First Aid provides comprehensive training in all aspects of first aid and CPR including medical and legal considerations of spinal injury management; environmental injuries; bone and joint injuries; abdominal and chest injuries; burns; and other medical emergencies. Lifesavers also learn CPR techniques for adult, children and infant victims. Prerequisite: Age and Bronze Medallion. Due to the nature of the curriculum and the interdependence developed between course participants within and during a specific course, 100% attendance is mandatory. Prerequisite: Age, Bronze Cross and Standard First Aid. Standard First Aid must be from one of the following agencies: Lifesaving Society, Canadian Red Cross, St. John Ambulance or Canadian Ski Patrol. Wet Interview: Aquatic Staff Screening Aquatic staff hiring consists of a wet and dry interview. During the wet interview applicants will be asked to perform National Lifeguard skills and teach a short instructional lesson. Applicants are required to bring a bathing suit and whistle. A dry interview will be arranged upon successful completion of the wet interview. Please contact the Aquatic Coordinator of the facility where the screening is taking place if you wish to register less than 48 hours in advance. There will be an evaluation of all required items at this level. Note: Successful candidates receive certification. Prerequisite: Age 13 years+ or Bronze Star. Successful completion renews the award for 2 years. Prerequisite: Current Lifesaving Society Standard First Aid and CPR-C. Holders of Standard First Aid certificates from other agencies may not recertify their certificate on a Lifesaving Society recertification course. You must return to your original agency. Your last certification was also a recert. You may only recertify once. For subsequent renewal of awards, holders must repeat the full Standard First Aid course (therefore you must alternate recerts and full courses). Your last certification was over 3 years ago. The date of certification of a full course to the date of certification of a recert, must be within 3 years. If longer than that - even by one day - a full course must be done to renew your certification. We now offer specialized first aid courses for local businesses. The SEE Auditor (Supervision Evaluation Enhancement) course is designed to give individuals the knowledge, training and tools required to evaluate the safety of lifeguard and instructor supervision using a quantifiable measuring system. Prerequisite: Proof of 100 hours experience lifeguarding/instructing and National Lifeguard or Lifesaving Instructor award. Challenges include: the implications of assuming responsibility in an emergency; how to deal with two (2) victims at once; and the rescue of a non-breathing spinal injury victim.
