1 Becoming a Lifeguard & Swim Instructor leadership Becoming a Lifeguard & Swim Instructor Bronze Medallion & Emergency First Aid Learn lifesaving principles embodied in the (4) components of water-rescue education: judgment, fitness, knowledge, and skill. Rescuers learn tows, carries and release methods in preparation for risky and challenging rescues. Swimmers develop stroke efficiency, complete a 500m timed endurance swim, and learn techniques for managing spinal injuries in shallow water. Training in Emergency First Aid provides general knowledge and practical experience in select aspects of first aid and CPR. Lifesavers also practice CPR techniques for adult and child victims, victim assessment, and first aid for a variety of victim types including bleeding, heart attack and stroke. 2 Becoming a Lifeguard & Swim Instructor Bronze Cross & Standard First Aid Bronze Cross offers advanced training, including an introduction to safe supervision in aquatic facilities. The difference between lifesaving and lifeguarding, the principles of emergency procedures and teamwork are emphasized. Lifesavers learn spinal injury and pulseless victim rescues. Standard First Aid provides comprehensive training in all aspects of first aid and CPR including medical and legal considerations of spinal injury management; environmental injuries; bone and joint injuries; abdominal and chest injuries; burns; and other medical emergencies. Holders of Standard First Aid certificates from other agencies may not recertify their certificate on a Lifesaving Society recertification course. You must return to your original agency. Your last certification was also a recert. You may only recertify once. For subsequent renewal of awards, holders must repeat the full Standard First Aid course (therefore you must alternate recerts and full courses). Your last certification was over 3 years ago. The date of certification of a full course to the date of certification of a recert, must be within 3 years.
