2 Boys Swimming & Diving Breck/Blake, Minnetonka emerge as team champions; Eight all-time records set in Class AA Breck/Blake claimed its third Class A championship at the 2017 State Boys Swimming and Diving Meet. The win was an improvement on last year s runner-up finish. In Class AA, the Minnetonka Skippers also improved on their 2016 second-place showing to win their 10th title. Eight all-time records were set during the Class AA meet. Class A The co-op of Breck/Blake improved on last year s runner-up showing and won its third title with points. Breck/Blake won its previous two championships in 2009 and The five-time defending champions from St. Thomas Academy of Mendota Heights placed second with points. The Orono Spartans were third at 193 points. Breck/Blake won two events on its way to the title. Senior Will Grassle won the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:54.27 and he also swam on the winning 400 freestyle relay team. Sophomore Dylan Brown, senior Everett Pruett, and sophomore Luke Hamlin rounded out that squad. They finished with a time of 3: Junior Griffin Wolner of Winona and senior Paul Sadergaski of Faribault won two titles apiece. Wolner won the 200 freestyle in 1:41.63 and the 500 freestyle in 4: Sadergaski claimed top honors in the 50 freestyle with a time of He also defended his title in the 100 butterfly with a time of St. Thomas Academy was the only school to successfully defend a relay title. The Cadet team of senior Michael Najarian, senior William Mayleben, senior Danny Lee, and junior William Burns completed the 200 freestyle relay in 1: Orono set the only record Class A record at this year s meet. Senior Will Brenton, junior Peter Sherek, senior Sig Muller, and senior Andy Kileen swam the 200 medley relay in 1: Class AA In the Class AA team competition, Minnetonka improved on last year s runnerup showing and claimed its 10th championship. The Skippers won previously in 1978, 1988, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1996, 1997, and Minnetonka finished with 340 points this year. The defending champions from Eden Prairie were second with 274 points and Chanhassen placed third with 155 points. The Skippers got off to a strong start, setting a new all-time state tournament record of 1:29.20 in the 200 medley relay. Junior Erik Gessner, senior Corey Lau, junior John Shelstad, and senior Sam Schilling were the members of that team. Schilling went on to defend his title in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1: In the prelims, he set the all-time record of 1:35.82 in the 200 freestyle. Schilling also set another record of in the 100 freestyle preliminaries. Lau was the final Minnetonka swimmer to win an individual event. He successfully defended his crown in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 55:04. The Skippers set their final all-time state meet record in the 400 freestyle relay. Shelstad, senior Joe Hanson, senior Thomas Pederson, and Schilling completed the race in 3: Senior JohnThomas Larson of Minnesota Online of St. Paul was the only other swimmer to win two events. He also set new alltime state meet records in both the 200 individual medley (1:46.30) and the 500 freestyle (4:16.92). Two of Eden Prairie s individuals and one of its relay teams were successful in defending their 2016 titles. Senior Jordan Greenberg won the 50 freestyle in and junior Joshua Withers won the 100 butterfly in 48.25, a new Class AA record. Both Withers and Greenberg also swam on the 200 freestyle relay team that set a new all-time state meet record of 1: Junior Nicholas Tullemans and ninth-grader Soren Dunn rounded out that team. Chanhassen junior Jack Dahlgren set the final all-time state meet record. He set the new standard of in the 100 backstroke. The 2017 State Boys Swimming and Diving Meet was held March 2-4 at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center on the University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis. Paid attendance was 6,066.
