1 MANTAS NEWS Issue 2 Mantas News YIMI WRISTBAND 2016 ISSUE 2 June 9, 2016 In Memory of Yimi Huang by Clodine Satori We are all saddened by the passing of one of our senior swimmers, Yimi Huang, last month. Yimi swam with our club for many years. She was a dear friend to many and a mentor and leader to a multitude of our young swimmers. We remember her as a humble, dedicated and devoted Manta whose quirky personality brought smiles to everyone who met her. Any qualified Mantas Swimmer who wishes to apply for the Burnaby Mountain Mantas Yimi Huang Scholarship, can find the application form on the main club webpage: We will deeply miss the Yimi induced belly laughs around the card table during swim meets, the neon orange apparel she so commonly wore, the wicked Frisbee throws during dryland, her serious game face and her easy, warm smile. She left us at much too young an age but has left an indelible mark on our lives. Our deepest and sincerest condolences go to her family; Jenny, Sam and Alan. In her memory we have purchased some orange wristbands. #THISISFORYIMI Those who wish to wear a wristband in Yimi s memory this summer should see Clodine Sartori. Burnaby Mountain Mantas Yimi Huang Scholarship At the beginning of the year a committee was formed to look into creating an ongoing scholarship fund for graduating BMM swimmers. We were just finalizing the details of this award when Yimi Huang unexpectedly passed away. In trying help those most affected in our club to deal with this tragic loss the committee (parents of mostly younger swimmers) learned more about Yimi from those who knew her. We realized the qualities we are looking for in a swimmer who receives one of these scholarships was fully embodied and exceeded in Yimi the service to the swim club, community, sport and academic achievement.

I am coaching two groups this season, intermediate B as well as the Senior A group I coached last season. L: My name is Louisa and I coach the Junior A group. 2. What is your background in swimming?

2 MANTAS NEWS Issue 2 2 Coach s Table with Vincent interviewing Louisa Tsang and Keenan Elliott 1. Who are you? What group do you coach? K: My full name is Keenan Elliott (no middle name, my parents decided it was just another thing to write down when filling out forms). I am coaching two groups this season, intermediate B as well as the Senior A group I coached last season. L: My name is Louisa and I coach the Junior A group. 2. What is your background in swimming? K: I started swimming competitively when I was around 12 years old for the Barrie Trojan Swim club. Where I'm from summer swimming doesn't exist, so I have only ever swam "winter". I have since moved to BC to continue my swimming career as a Varsity Athlete competing for SFU in the NCAA. L: I started swimming with Mantas since I was 6 years old, beginning in development. I ve competed and participated at every BCSSA provincial championship meet since I was 9, and begun shadowing coaches in swimming, biathlon, and cross-country skiing at the age of 14. When I turned 16, I started coaching swimming with Mantas, earning several coaching certifications and expanding my knowledge with the sport from a coaching perspective. 3. What do you do outside of the swimming world? K: Hmm... well seeing as short of coaching swimming I also still train and compete full time, most of my life outside of swimming involves trying to recover by sleeping and eating too much. However, I am also a full time student studying Biochemistry. In my free time I enjoy anything outdoorsy like camping or hiking, as well as just spending time with friends. L: Other than swimming, I am currently in school, entering my 3rd year at Langara College in Vancouver, studying kinesiology/health sciences. When I m not occupied by coaching and swimming, I lead recreational after school programs with the City of Burnaby at various elementary schools. Ultimately, in my free time, I enjoy going on runs with my dog, reading about how fascinating the human body is, and occasionally call myself a professional napper. Keenan keeping warm on a cool morning 6. What is your favourite fruit? K: Definitely pineapple. L: Mangos. Always. 4. What is your best coaching memory? K: Tough question to answer with just one memory. As a swimmer I enjoy the reward you feel after morning practice when you have already finished an hour and a half workout before most people have even gotten out of bed. As a coach I enjoy seeing another group of young swimmers feeling the same way after their dreaded morning workouts. L: I think my best coaching memories are all of them, I could never have just one that sticks out the most. All the swimmers, parents, and coaches contribute to the memories I have as a coach and will always cherish deeply. 5. Who was your childhood hero? K: I ve always looked up to my older brother (as most younger brothers do), he swam when he was younger and was the reason I began my swimming career. He was also the one that first got me interested in the sciences. L: I don t have a single, specific person I would call my childhood hero or role model. I was fortunate enough to be exposed to higher level athletes in biathlon and swimming at a young age, which allowed me to be motivated and inspired by many of my friends, teammates, and coaches. That being said you don't have to love every single detail about swimming, just make sure you find that one reason to keep going on those hard sets, and remember why you started.

K: With respect to my last point, just make sure we have fun with the season.

After all it is summer, which is a time for good times with good friends! Looking forward to some good racing this summer, and see you all around the pool deck!

The BCSSA and Mantas provide a great environment to connect with other families from not just our club, but also around the province. I hope you enjoy the summer season with us!

3 MANTAS NEWS Issue Do you have any words of wisdom for your swimmers? K: Make sure you enjoy what you re doing best times are great, but if you don't enjoy the process or find something you love along the way, it is going to make everything a whole lot more difficult. That being said you don't have to love every single detail about swimming, just make sure you find that one reason to keep going on those hard sets, and remember why you started. L: Don t be afraid to push your limits to reach your goals; if it doesn t change you, keep trying. Never confuse a single failure without a final defeat. 8. Any words to all Mantas members? K: With respect to my last point, just make sure we have fun with the season. If we get too serious about everything it becomes a chore, but if we make sure to have fun, best times and big accomplishments will find their way. After all it is summer, which is a time for good times with good friends! Looking forward to some good racing this summer, and see you all around the pool deck! L: Take advantage of what the club has to offer, such as meets, volunteer opportunities, and officiating! I m looking forward to connecting with you all over the next few months! Hats Off Day Parade by Jacob Ng Hey guys, my name is Jacob, and I m one of the Mantas junior coaches! Today, I m writing about my experiences aboard the club s float at the annual Hats Off Day parade. Since I was a little kid, Hats Off Day was always a special day to look forward to. I ve always imagined what it would be like to be a part of the floats that promenade down Hastings Street filled with people waving. Last Saturday, I finally got an opportunity to do so, and it was an experience like none other. As our truck made its way along the route of the parade, people waved and cheered us on. Children had three or more of our club tattoos on their faces, and many parents came up to us afterward asking for more information about our club. I felt proud to represent our club at Hats Off Day, and I would definitely recommend that everyone participate in the parade next year!!!

Upcoming Swim Meets Burnaby Barracudas Grand Prix June 11 & 12, 2016 Parking: There is a free parking lot adjacent of the Central Park Pool. Please comply with all local parking regulations, and be considerate of our neighbours near the pool. Canopy: There aren t lot of rooms for family canopies and tents on the grounds. No tenting or camping overnight are allowed. Viewing: There are few sets of Bleachers around the pool for viewing. Parents are allowed to enter the pool deck with caution and not to interfere with deck officials. Port Coquitlam Marlins Meet June 18 & 19, 2016 Parking: There is a free parking lot adjacent of the Centennial Pool. Please comply with all local parking regulations, and be considerate of our neighbours near the pool. Canopy: There are lot of rooms for family canopies and tents on the grounds. No tenting or camping overnight are allowed. Viewing: There are few sets of Bleachers (outside the Pool Fence) for viewing. Parents are NOT allowed to enter the pool deck except volunteers and deck officials.

NOTE there has been some problems with SHAW blocking the meet signup link please check the website if you haven t received a sign up a week or more before the swim meet. Monthly practice schedules -these are each entered individually please double check your calendar with the club schedule for any discrepancies contact the webmaster or the parent liaison as soon as one is found and it will be fixed. Please make sure your child is NOT on a relay BEFORE you leave relay teams posted at Mantas canopy later in the morning. LISTEN for your swimmers race preferably listen for the event prior being called to the martialing area send your swimmer to see their coach before AND after the race. Barracudas meet has martialing areas on both sides of the pool depending on assigned lane.
