18 AQUATICS OUR COACHING STAFF Judy Garay Head Coach Jr. Swim Team and Masters Judy Garay is a former international level swimmer and a certified level one, fundamentals coach as well as an elementary school teacher. Swimming has been a part of my life for as far back as I can remember. I was fortunate to have some excellent coaches, and some not so good ones so that I could see what makes a good coach. I believe that all coaches need to respect their athletes and make sure that the experience they have in the pool, or anywhere, is enjoyable, fun and helps them grow as a person. It is all about developing one s own potential and developing confidence and character as well as learning to support others. Melissa Cheyne Tri-Kids and Tri-Training Coach Melissa is a certified Level 1 Swimming Fundamentals Coach as well as a Triathlon Community Coach. She has been coaching youth in both competitive swimming and triathlon training for the past year and a half at the Club and recently started coaching adults in the triathlon program. She enjoys coaching all age groups and motivating them to reach their goals both in the pool and out on the road. 22 AQUATICS WATERFIT The benefits of in water exercise originate from the supportive nature of the water environment. Muscular strengthening and toning of muscles result from the resistive properties of water as a dense liquid. Water has several properties that make it an ideal environment for exercise; buoyancy, resistance and most importantly the training effect. In water training results in similar training effects as land-based training with a possible reduction in stress due to the low impact afforded by the buoyancy and resistance of the water upon landing. Our skilled, experienced and qualified staff provide exciting and challenging classes that will help you get fit and have fun in the water. 47 SKATING IMPORTANCE OF REGISTRATION Please remember that registering your children is mandatory for all skating programs. It guarantees the child a spot in the session and ensures that you receive the proper billing. Our Colour Coding System Implemented in 2008, the coding system separates each session by colour. For instance, the Adult program is pink and the Family program is yellow. All notices and documentation will be printed on the corresponding coloured paper of their session. We hope this helps the activity member when working through their scheduling. ADULT & TOT (SALMON) This program is designed for the adult who would like to be on the ice with their 3 or 4 year old and would like to participate while their young child learns to skate. This is a 30 minute session which is directed by our coaches. The instruction will introduce simple skating skills which will enable the parent to help the tots when taking them skating. Helmets must be worn. Tuesday and Thursday sessions may be cancelled on test days. See test dates on previous page. Date: May 6 - June 14, 2014 Time: Tuesday 4:15-5:00 pm Thursday 4:15-5:00 pm Saturday 9:45-10:30 am Fee: 1 Day - Spring Session $ Days - Spring Session $172 The Helmet Rule The TCSCC Skating Activity stipulates in their rules that an adult must accompany skaters under 5 years of age and the child must wear a helmet on family skate. Club Management and the activity strongly recommend further that the decision as to whether the child wears a helmet over the age of 5 should not be predicated on age, but rather on ability. Family skate sessions become very busy and the safety of our members is very important to the Club. 47 SPRING / SUMMER 2014

58 TENNIS JUNIOR CLINIC OUTLINE AND PROGRESSION CHART Welcome to the Junior Tennis Program. From 4 year old children hitting the ball for the first time, to provincial and nationally ranked tournament players, the Club has a program for all ages, standards and levels of commitment. The program starts out with the Recreational Progressive Tennis Red Stage and runs through all the recreational levels shown on the progression chart on this page. A Junior member completing this program will achieve a sound skill basis in the sport that will allow them to play and enjoy the game at the Club level. On completion of the program, they should also feel comfortable playing in entry level competitive events. Our Juniors who demonstrate a strong level of skills and commitment to the game will be invited to join the Competitive program. This program starts out at the Competitive Progressive Tennis Red Stage and runs through to the National Team Program. Please see Progressive chart. Many players successfully completing this program will have the option of continuing open tournament play or attending NCAA college on a full or partial scholarship or playing on a Canadian University team. 59 TENNIS OVERVIEW RECREATION PROGRESSIVE TENNIS For the Spring session, this program runs for one eight week session. Minimum 3 players, maximum 6 players per session. The Spring session runs from the week of April 28 to the week of June 16. Rain-outs will be scheduled the week of June 23. For further information, please contact Ali Khan at ext or akhan@torontocricketclub.com. Progressive Tennis uses a systematic progression of court size, balls, and racquets to scale down to an appropriate level for children 5-10 years of age. It allows the children to train and compete with the appropriate court size and equipment which are better suited for their size. This makes the game a lot easier to learn and more enjoyable. There are three stages in progressive tennis and each stage not only has specific equipment to aid success, but particular skills to develop as well. It has been brought together in a much more systematic way than ever before. During the last year we have made significant changes in our junior development program and will continue to do so to maximize the potential of the children in our program. We have also changed the names of all the Recreational programs in order to be better synchronized with Tennis Canada as well as the International Tennis Federation s under 10 programs. The new stages are outlined on this page. Red Stage: 4 to 7 years Play Tennis Rating 1.0 to 1.5 Players will be playing on a 1/2 tennis court using red colour low compression balls. Along with tennis fundamentals, players will develop coordination, balance, speed and agility. In order to maintain optimum challenge, the Red Stage program has been broken down into two segments. Red Stage 1: 4 and 5 years Children who are just starting to play tennis or have very little experience. Red Stage 2: 6 and 7 years Children who have some basic tennis fundamentals and are able to demonstrate good overall coordination. Children at this level are ready to begin competing at half court. Orange Stage: 7 to 9 years Play Tennis Rating 1.5 to 2.0 In this stage children will be playing on a 3/4 court and will be using orange colour low compression balls. Players will move on to this stage once they have a full collection of skills at the Red stage. The goal in this phase is to develop tennis technique and tactics along with tennis specific fitness. Green: 9 to 10 years Play Tennis Rating 2.0 to 2.5 At this level the players will move to a full court. The children will be using green dot balls wich only have a 10% lower compression than regular balls. This will help promote the continued development of proper technique and also ensure longer rallies. After this stage the players will graduate to using the regular ball in the Match Play and Grand Slammers classes. Yellow Stage: 11 to 16 years Play Tennis Rating 2.5 to 3.5 Match Play (11-13 years) and Grand Slammers (14 years and up) classes will continue to help our students improve their technique while focusing on consistency and learning to implement successful singles and doubles strategies. Select Program The Select program provides a more competitive training environment for our junior members who have not gone through the competitive streaming program. They meet three times per week. Some participants in this program may be invited into the Provincial program. 59 SPRING / SUMMER 2014
