A CLASSROOM WHAT WE NEED TO KNOW 1. What s New? Objective: Provide an overview of the Red Cross Swim programs Time frame: 20 minutes Materials: Worksheets (1 set of Red Cross Swim Preschool, 3 sets of Red Cross Swim Kids) Orientation In-service PowerPoint (slides #1-5) (optional) Activities: Hand out Red Cross Swim Kids and Red Cross Swim Preschool worksheets for Instructors to review Use the PowerPoint or the notes below to present information on the programs, including new names, levels, content and worksheet format. Facilitator Notes: What s New: Program Redesign (slide #2) To respond to new market trends, Red Cross has broadened its initial injury prevention focus to three well-defined goals: 1) Safety: Reduce the number of water-related injuries and drownings 2) Empowerment: Offer a lifetime of opportunity for aquatic experiences 3) Health and Fitness: Promote swimming as part of a healthy, active lifestyle Three Core Content Areas (slide #3) At the program level, this repositioning is reflected in three core content areas found in both the Preschool and Kids programs. There is now an even stronger emphasis on fitness as part of a holistic approach to learning how to swim and be safe in, on and around the water Skills and Water Safety: Renewed focus on active ways to teach this Swimming: emphasis on building strokes through progressions and drills Fitness Activities: this includes such things as distance swims, butterfly and sidestroke all with a focus on personal improvement Page 2 of 12

New name, new brand The new program brand name Red Cross Swim is designed to connect the learn-toswim program to the Red Cross a name parents know and trust. Red Cross Swim Preschool (slide #4): The new Red Cross Swim Preschool program is a 7-level stand-alone program allowing swimmers to enter at various levels based on age and ability. Children will enjoy the animal themes and mascots, which have been added to enhance learning and fun: Starfish Duck Sea Turtle Salamander Sunfish Crocodile Whale Complete sets of lesson plans using the mascot and animal themes are available to Instructors to assist in running dynamic classes for this age group, with program content including the three core content areas. These are included with the Assistant Water Safety Instructor Manual on a CD ROM. Red Cross Swim Kids (slide #5) Red Cross Swim Kids has been built from the solid AquaQuest program, but differs in that it does not include any preschool levels. It is designed for children aged six and older, includes 10 levels with program content developed around the three core content areas and solid progressions. A complete sets of lesson plans are provided to reinforce progressions, drills and help Instructors teach the new program. 2. Red Cross Swim Preschool Objective: Provide information on Red Cross Swim Preschool content, evaluation and lesson planning and introduce the new program materials. Time frame: 45 minutes Materials: 1 set of Red Cross Swim Preschool worksheets Sample Red Cross Swim Preschool lesson plans Mascot songs handout - 1 per participant (Appendix A) Samples of the progress card, level mascot stickers, participation mascot sticker (which shows a group of three mascots together), copy of Red Cross Swim News (if available) (or use slides #6-7) Conversion chart (Appendix B or available on the AP website) Flip chart and markers Page 3 of 12

Activities: Content Divide into seven groups. Assign each group a Red Cross Swim Preschool level and provide a copy of the appropriate worksheet. Provide each participant with a copy of the mascot songs handout (Appendix A). Each group is to review their Red Cross Swim Preschool level and prepare a brief overview including: o Level theme o Fitness items o Theme song (sung as part of the presentation) o Come up with games for a few items in their level o Whether the level is parented and/or un-parented o Any items seen as new and/or exciting Have groups present on their findings in order of levels, to understand progression development. Show instructors the new stickers, progress booklet and Red Cross Swim News (1 per level). (or use slide # 6-7) Evaluation Discuss the following: Red Cross Swim Preschool is both a participation and an evaluation-based program. Here s how it works: Starfish and Duck levels every student participating (whether attending one class or the entire session) receives a recognition sticker and progress card. Guidelines are through observation and children move through these levels based on their age (Starfish is for 4-18 month old babies; Duck is for month toddlers). Sea Turtle through to Whale (ages 3-5 years) successful completion of skills based on performance criteria determines whether a participant moves on to the next level. For swimmers who do not complete the performance criteria there is a participation sticker to hand out for these levels. Review the conversion chart, identifying how the Red Cross Swim Preschool program converges into the Red Cross Swim Kids program (Appendix B) Lesson Planning Identify and pass around new lesson plan tools available to Instructors. Review the set up of daily lesson plans. Each item is taught at least once by lesson five, and all items are covered a minimum of three times. Identify how the theme, fitness activities, mascot song and other games found in the levels are incorporated. As a group, brainstorm safety considerations required when teaching the levels. Key Point: The new lesson plan tools are designed to support new Instructors in quality program delivery. As Instructors gain experience they are encouraged to add their own creativity to their plans. Page 4 of 12

3. Red Cross Swim Kids Objectives: Introduce Red Cross Swim Kids including the new lesson plans and all program materials Identify changes made from AquaQuest to the Red Cross Swim Kids program Ensure Instructors are confident in the delivery of the Red Cross Swim Kids program Time frame: 25 minutes Materials: 3 sets of Red Cross Swim Kids worksheets (levels 1-10) Sample lesson plans Conversion chart (Appendix B) Images of the progress card, stickers, level 10 completion medal/certificate, badges and Red Cross Swim News (slides #8-10) Pre-cut strips of colored paper Markers (3 sets of each color: green, blue and red) Flip chart paper Tape Activities: Content Overview Divide into three groups. Provide each group with a set of worksheets, precut strips of paper and one marker (note: Skills and Water Safety marker is green, Swimming is blue and Fitness Activities is red). Assign each group one of the three core content areas: Skills and Water Safety, Swimming, Fitness Activities. Groups quickly review their worksheets, identifying anything new and exciting for their core content area. Write what is found on precut strips of colored paper, using the appropriate colored marker, including the level number. While the groups are working on their activity, the facilitator places flip chart paper with the numbers 1-10 listed (one number per flip chart) on the wall. Groups stick their pieces of paper on the appropriate flip charts. Groups take turns presenting their findings for each level (i.e., all groups present for level 1 before moving onto level 2). The objective is to identify what is new in each component and where it fits within the 10-level program. Converting AquaQuest to Red Cross Swim Kids Using the conversion chart (Appendix B), show how AquaQuest converges into Red Cross Swim Kids. Product Overview Show Instructors the new products (sample lesson plans, worksheets, Red Cross Swim Kids progress cards, personal best stickers, completion badges and level 10 completion medal/certificate and copy of Red Cross Swim News) (optional slides #8-10) Page 5 of 12

Explain that there is an additional evaluation item provided to encourage and recognize personal best in fitness activities. Each child at every level will be encouraged to improve and thereby receive a personal best sticker. Also, there is a medal and certificate provided to participants completing level 10. This is designed to reinforce the completion of all 10 levels. Lesson Plan Tools Show sample lesson plans and review: How core lesson plans work How lesson plans for each day are set up Key Point: The new lesson plan tools are designed to support new Instructors in quality program delivery. As Instructors gain experience they are encouraged to add creativity to their plans. 4 Focus on Fitness Activities Preschool and Kids programs Objective: Show how the new Fitness Activities fit into the Red Cross Swim Preschool and Red Cross Swim Kids programs Time frame: 15 minutes Materials: Red Cross Swim Kids worksheets (levels 1-10) and Red Cross Swim Preschool worksheets (seven levels) Markers (3 sets of each color: green, blue and red) Flip chart paper Tape Review the following key messages: Fitness is a new section in our Red Cross Swim program. Fitness Activities include stroke drills, synchronized swimming activities, songs, games and distance swims. Personal best stickers are part of the Red Cross Swim Kids program only. Swimmers receive a personal best sticker for improving on either their distance or their time in each level. The focus on fitness is intended to increase the candidate s fitness level, building endurance, strength, power and flexibility. Fitness Activities should be included in every lesson. Note: Endurance swim is now called distance swim. Activities: Divide into groups, combining experienced and new Water Safety Instructors. Assign each group a level and fitness item. Kicking drills (Red Cross Swim Kids level 3) Page 6 of 12

Dolphin kick drills (Red Cross Swim Kids level 5) Eggbeater/treading water drill (Red Cross Swim Kids level 8) Combo of Stroke Drills (Red Cross Swim Kids level 9) Synchro items weight transfer progression leading to summersaults, handstands (Red Cross Swim Preschool Sunfish, Crocodile and Whale) Whale Kick (Red Cross Swim Preschool Whale) Play and songs/relay (Red Cross Swim Preschool Sea Turtle) Games used in the lesson plans (Red Cross Swim Preschool targeted) Groups review the performance criteria and create one drill or activity to teach their assigned item (these will be presented in the pool). Personal Best: Red Cross Swim Kids program Divide into pairs. Assign each pair a Red Cross Swim Kids level. Instruct pairs to identify how the distance swim in that level is measured as a personal best (time or distance). As a group, discuss findings: levels 1-5 distance swims focus on building distance. Levels 6-10 focus on building speed by measuring time. Personal best stickers support both fitness objectives. The key is to promote individual improvement and celebrate their personal best. 5 Instructor Development Programs Objective: Introduce Instructors to the new Instructor Development Programs and materials Time frame: 15 minutes Materials: Optional: Instructor In-service Orientation PowerPoint (slides #11-14) Activities: Content Overview Review program redesign and restructuring (slide #11). What s New in Instructor Training? (slide #12) The program has been redesigned to create greater value for Instructors as they go through the certification process. There is a two-stage integrated program: Assistant Water Safety Instructor and Water Safety Instructor. Both stages include teach experience. Assistant Water Safety Instructors can teach under direct supervision from Water Safety Instructors. Discuss the ASWI and WSI levels, teaching experience and resource material (slide #13-14). Page 7 of 12

Instructor Development Program (slide # 12) Program Levels Teaching Experience New Resource Material Assistant Water Safety Instructor (30 hours) Assistant WSI (8 hours) Flexible delivery AWSI manual Stroke Chart Lesson Plans on CD ROM Water Safety Instructor (25 hours) WSI (12 hours) Flexible delivery WSI Manual with teaching strategy chapter Water Safety Instructor Trainer (20 hours) AWS and WSI Courses WSIT Manual with sample core plans Identify that the process and time frames for recertification have not changed. New Instructor Materials (slides #13-14) Show Instructors samples of the following: Water Safety Instructor manual (note the strategy chapter replaces the strategy cards current Instructors use) Assistant Water Safety Instructor manual with Lesson plans (CD Rom) Binder Stroke charts (indicates physical principles of each stroke as well as showing progressions while moving through the levels). Worksheets Answer any questions. Provide 15 minutes for Instructors to change for the pool session B. POOL - LET S GET WET! Time frame: 30 minutes Activities: Front glide/side glide combo: Demonstrate and have participants perform assisted and unassisted. Review how glides fit into the front crawl progression. Page 8 of 12

Ask Instructors to demonstrate common errors they have experienced in this skill and describe their best corrective drill or method. Disorientation entries: Instructors try a variety of deep-water entries that could disorientate a swimmer (Red Cross Swim Kids level 4): Front roll Side roll Jumping without goggles Jumping in and turning a somersault Fitness activities: Presentations: Instructors take turns presenting their Fitness Activity drill (from the classroom session). Review the following fitness items, asking Instructors to identify how each is intended to build a participant s fitness level. Kicking drills (Red Cross Swim Kids level 3) Dolphin kick drills (Red Cross Swim Kids level 5) Eggbeater/treading water drill (Red Cross Swim Kids level 8) Combo of Stroke Drills (Red Cross Swim Kids level 9) Synchro items weight transfer progression leading to somersaults, handstands (Red Cross Swim Preschool Sunfish, Crocodile and Whale) Whale Kick (Red Cross Swim Preschool Whale) Play and songs/relay (Red Cross Swim Preschool Sea Turtle) Games used in the lesson plans (Red Cross Swim Preschool targeted) Distance swim personal best concept. Divide into pairs. One partner swims 25 metres of sidestroke (warm up), returns 25 metres of any stroke (their choice) as fast as they can. Their partner records their time. Repeat the activity with the second partner taking a turn. As a group discuss and reinforce the personal best concept and sticker. Discuss any questions. Page 9 of 12
