3 Unique Student Identifier What is It? Who Needs It and How Do you Get It? The Australian Government, Department of Industry have created a national database of all enrolments in Vocational Education and Training (VET) All students completing Nationally Recognised Training with us will from 1 January 2016 be required to provide St John with their Unique Student Identifier a USI If you already hold a USI: we will need it for validation If you do not hold a USI: you will need to get one before you attend your course It s free, it s easy to do and you only have to do it once. Simply log on to enter the required information and the system will generate your USI. This is an example of what your USI will look like XZMEL9748B For training that occurs from 1 January 2016, St John will not be able to issue Statement of Attainments for any accredited courses without a USI. 4 Many businesses believe they are First Aid READY for a First Aid emergency... BUT this is not necessarily the case. First Aid compliance is a complex area. Avoid the risk and become First Aid READY with St John. Are You First Aid Ready St John Ambulance offers an On Site First Aid Kit Re Stocking Service and will liaise with your organization on the maintenance of all your first aid kits. The maintenance is in the form of replacing those consumables used and out of date consumables therefore maintaining the integrity of the First Aid Kit. As our service vehicle is fully stocked we can supply your needs immediately. 6 Code of Conduct St John Ambulance Australia (TAS) will ensure that qualified and experienced trainers are used to conduct courses. While St John Ambulance Australia (TAS) staff will provide encouragement and support, each student has a responsibility to make every effort to maintain satisfactory progress in their first aid training. Trainers will prepare and present materials that meet the appropriate standard. Students will be assessed fairly, objectively and consistently to determine their competency and understanding of the material. Enrolment Conditions Access to all courses is subject to: course fees being paid in advance of the course availability of courses sufficient enrolments in courses course entry requirements being met Timely arrival Students who arrive later than 15 minutes after the course commencement time, will not be permitted to attend and will be booked into another course. Registration and Course Fee St John Ambulance reserves the right to determine registration and course fees. For information on course fees, contact the nearest training centre. We do require prepayment of course fees prior to the commencement of course. Non Attendance Failure to cancel a booking prior to the commencement date of the course will attract the appropriate course fee being charged. 6

7 Flexible Learning & Assessment Procedures St John TAS has the capacity to use learning and assessment methods and materials appropriate to the learning and assessment needs of participants. Assessment is the process of collecting evidence and making judgement on the extent and nature of progress towards the performance requirements set out in a competence standard, module or learning outcome. Assessed tasks may include in class activities, group work, demonstrations and oral and/or verbal theory tests. St John TAS supports competence based learning and assessment and participants will be assessed fairly, objectively and consistently to determine their competency and understanding of the material presented. Statements of competency will be issued to participants within two weeks of course completion. Any participant experiencing difficulties associated with the learning and assessment procedures should raise their problem with the trainer so that alternative arrangements can be made. Participants with a disability or requiring literacy and numeracy support may seek assistance to succeed in course learning outcomes Workplace Health & Safety St John Ambulance Australia (TAS) has a responsibility to provide a safe and healthy environment for their employees, customers and visitors. Under the Workplace Health and Safety Act 2012, participants also have certain responsibilities. These include: undertake activities in a safe manner following instructions provided for safety not putting themselves or others at risk reporting in injury/illness or incident to an appropriate person. Disciplinary Measures Students who exhibit behaviour which is disruptive, inappropriate or disturbing may be excluded from classes. 7

8 Refund Policy A full refund of fees will be given if: St John Ambulance cancels a course A student gives notice, in writing, that they will not be attending the course four (4) days before the commencement date for that course A 50% refund on fees paid will be given when a student withdraws from the course four (4) days or less from the commencement date of the course. No refund will be given after the course has commenced. To request a refund, a student should apply in writing to St John Ambulance at the Centre where the booking was made, simply stating the amount sought and the reason why the refund should be made. A copy of the receipt for the amount paid must accompany the request. Refund will not be made to any party other than the person/organisation making the original payment. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) St John recognises AQF qualifications and Statement of Attainment issued by other Recognised Training Organisation (RTO) in Australia at an equivalent level for the remaining period of currency. In some cases First Aid qualifications may require the holder to demonstrate appropriate practical skills and knowledge to fulfil competency requirements of the equivalent qualification sought. A qualified assessor may be required to conduct this assessment in accordance with Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) requirements. If you have work experience, life experience or formal study you can apply for RPL. This process recognises the skills and knowledge you have and can currently demonstrate. It is sometimes referred to as Recognition of Current Competencies (RCC). An RPL/RCC kit is available from the Training Manager upon request. Client Access to Information A request for information must be made in writing to the CEO. 8

9 Complaints, Grievances and Appeals If, for any reason, you are unhappy with either the quality of the course being delivered, your assessment result or the standard of service received from St John TAS, you should, in the first instance, discuss your concerns with the course trainer. If the matter is not resolved after discussion with the trainer, you are invited to raise the issue with the Training Manager in writing. (Assessment appeals must be lodged within 5 days after the end of course). All grievances/complaints are attended to through our Quality System for Continual Improvement. Notification of the outcome will be given to the client. You may otherwise choose to refer the matter to an external complaints agency. Privacy Policy Your privacy is respected by St John Ambulance. Information collected will be used in course administration and may be provided to training staff. You will normally be reminded when your certificate expires and you may also be provided with information on first aid kits and other courses offered by St John. If you do not want to receive certificate expiry reminders or information, have privacy concerns or would like to verify information held about you, please contact the State Office on Access and Equity St John Ambulance Australia actively encourages the participation and involvement of a cross section of the community. This is achieved through the establishment of non-discriminatory student selection procedures, encouraging access for all members of the community. Students with language or literacy difficulties should inform the enrolment staff so that appropriate assistance can be provided. Students with any other difficulty during the course should in the first instance seek assistance from the trainer conducting the course. Failing satisfactory solution of the problem, the State/Territory Training Manager should be approached. 9

Expected Outcomes Successful participants will be able to, in real situations, render life-saving and basic first aid to casualties in need. Accreditation Successful participants receive a Statement of Attainment for the following unit of competency. As well as reinforcing knowledge and skills the session focuses on assessment. 15 Provide Basic Emergency Life Support Course Fee: $95 per person (Includes First Aid Booklet) This course teaches recognition and management of immediate life threatening conditions. It will give participants the skills and knowledge to enable them to recognise and manage immediate life threatening emergencies. Expected Outcomes Successful participants will be able to manage an emergency in the workplace until the first aider arrives. Who Should Attend All employees in the workplace who need to gain a basic knowledge of essential first aid. 25 Provide First Aid Annual Recertification Course Fee: $95 per person This 6 hour course is designed to refresh and recertify those who hold a current Provide First Aid Statement of Attainment that has been issued within the last calendar year. It reinforces previous knowledge and skills and will incorporate any changes in first aid management that has occurred. As well as reinforcing previous knowledge and skills the session focuses on assessment. Expected Outcomes Successful participants will be able to, in real situations, render life-saving and basic first aid to casualties in need. 34 Provide an Emergency First Aid Response in an Education and Care Setting Course Fee: $210 per person (Includes First Aid Manual & Resuscitation Pack) This program is especially pitched towards Child Carers and those in Education who require initial accreditation in Provide first aid, Asthma and Anaphylaxis. The training and practical sessions are focused on children s illnesses and injuries and there is ample opportunity to practice CPR on both infant and child manikins as well as adults.
