This is just one of the many reasons we recommend testing your pool water at least once a week. The PH (measure of acidity and alkalinity) of pool water should be maintained between 7.2 and 7.6. In this range, which is a little alkaline, the chlorine sanitizer works the best and the pool equipment will last the longest. One of the quickest ways to destroy a heater, or ruin a liner, is to run the pool in an acid condition. If the PH of the water goes too high, the water can turn cloudy, scaling on the liner can occur, and the sanitizer will be ineffective. It is also important to maintain the Total Alkalinity between ppm, the calcium level between ppm, and the conditioner (chlorine stabilizer) level between ppm. The Total Alkalinity, which is a reading of the amount of carbonates, bicarbonates, and hydroxides in the water, has a direct bearing on the PH of the water. If the Total Alkalinity is, it is very difficult to maintain the PH. At a calcium level of ppm, the water is considered hard water, and it is less likely to attack the pool s equipment. That is why Crystal Pools recommends bypassing the water softener if possible when adding make-up water. If you have a low cyanuric acid level, the ultraviolet sunlight will react with the chlorine molecule and dissipate the chlorine very rapidly from the pool; thus costing you a lot more money to sanitize your pool effectively. A helpful preventative maintenance is to clean the inside of your filter at least once a year. This means if you have a DE Perflex filter (bump handle style) you need to remove the bolts or band from around the filter head, pull out the tube nest of nylon fingers and hose it thoroughly. If you have a DE grid filter, first open the vent valve to release any pressure in the tank. Then, loosen the center band and remove from the center of the tank. Separate the filter and examine the grids. Open the bottom drain valve and spray any caked on DE powder. You can also remove each one of the grids and clean separately by removing the top collector manifold. Note how the grids are assembled in the nest before removing. Recommended: A garden hose and nozzle are all you need to clean the DE powder from the filter.
