Opening and closing certain valves will change the flow through the chlorinator. Open Closed Revision 5 Page 2 of 15

3 Name Description Pressure Relief Valve Opens when system pressure is greater than 80 psi to prevent damage to system. Controls the total flow through the system. If flow rate to the storage tank is too Valve 1 high use this valve to decrease the flow. Never completely close. Valve 2 Valve 3 Check Valve Valve 4 Minor chlorine concentration adjustments. Major chlorine concentration adjustments. Prevents water from ever flowing backwards through the system. Creates one directional flow. Make sure arrow is pointing up. When pump is turned off close this valve to prevent backflow. Can also create back pressure on chlorinator if needed. Never close when pump is on. Revision 5 Page 3 of 15

4 2: Adding Chlorine The WMI chlorinator is designed to operate with 3-inch diameter chlorine tablets such as the OxyChem ACL 90 Trichlor tablets or an equivalent (See Appendix 1 for detailed specifications). Always wear gloves or otherwise protect your hands from direct contact with the chlorine. Step 1 Unscrew chlorinator ring clamp. Step 2 Remove clamp ring and top of chlorinator. 5 Step 3 Place four chlorine tablets on the tray located inside the chlorine base. Always wear gloves or otherwise protect your hands from direct contact with the chlorine. Step 4 Place top and clamp ring on chlorinator and tighten clamp ring until two ends of clamp ring are touching. NOTE: When finished, wash hands thoroughly as prolonged chlorine contact can cause mild burns. Warning: Chlorine is a very powerful disinfectant and must be handled carefully. When removing the chlorinator top or opening the container storing the chlorine source, concentrated chlorine fumes may be present. Ensure the area is well ventilated and to not inhale the concentrated fumes. Revision 5 Page 5 of 15

6 When to add more chlorine tablets to the chlorinator Add more tablets when the chlorine level is about half of the original level, add new tablets as instructed above. 3: Testing Chlorine Concentration The chlorine added by the WMI Chlorinator provides disinfection of the water and residual disinfection in the water containers used by community members. Water is safe to drink with chlorine concentration levels up to 4.0 ppm. WMI recommends a chlorine concentration of between ppm. For communities using sanitary water containers for personal storage the concentration can be near 0.5 ppm. For communities using less sanitary water containers the concentration should be closer to 2 ppm. The WMI chlorinator is supplied with SenSafe free chlorine test strips manufactured by Industrial Test Systems (see Appendix 2 for detailed specifications). Following the instructions on the SenSafe bottle, test the chlorine level of the water in the collection tank. The target chlorine concentration is between ppm. Revision 5 Page 6 of 15

7 4: Start Up Well Return Step 1 Before turning on pump set valve 1 and valve 4 in the open position. Turn valve 2 and valve 3 halfway between open and closed. Do not have outlet of chlorinator connected to drinking water storage tank. Use the open outlet to sample water Step 2 Turn on pump. Revision 5 Page 7 of 15

8 Step 3 Water should be seen flowing through the chlorinator at a slow rate. Step 4 Wait 5 minutes. Test chlorine concentration of water. Target concentration is between ppm. Step 5 To adjust concentration follow instructions in Section 5: Regulating Chlorine Concentration. Wait 5 minutes between each sampling. Revision 5 Page 8 of 15

9 No Return Step 1 Before turning on pump set valves 1, valve 2, and valve 4 to the open position. Turn valve 3 half way between open and closed. 11 5: Regulating Chlorine Concentration Valve 3 controls major chlorine adjustments. Valve 2 controls minor adjusts. To adjust the concentration take the following actions: Increase Chlorine Concentration Rotate Valve 3 clockwise. Retest Water. Minor Increase of Chlorine Concentration Rotate Valve 2 counterclockwise. Retest Water. Revision 5 Page 11 of 15

13 6: Troubleshooting Fixing a leak If there is a leak in the system, turn off the pump and fix the leak by taking the following measures: If the leak is at a joint that has been glued together, dry the pipe connection and add some PVC cement to the rim. Allow this cement to dry and turn the water back on to see if the leak has been fixed. If not, replace the leaking PVC fittings. If the leak is at a union connection of two assemblies, tighten the connection more. If the leak persists unscrew the connection and check that O-ring is in place. If the leak is at the chlorinator, tighten the clamp ring. If the leak persists remove the clamp ring and check that O-ring is seated properly with no dirt in the O-ring groove. Pressure Relief Opens The pressure relief will open and water will flow out when the pressure builds in excess of 80 psi within the system. To reset the valve follow the following steps: Turn off the pump. Close the pressure relief by pushing the internal piston down with a screw driver or other rod available. Check thatt valve 1, valve 3, and any other valves downstream of the system are open z Revision 5 Page 13 of 15
