1 HCY Stingrays Team Tryouts Day: Time: Location: Saturday, April 12 th 9 am 12 noon Raritan Valley Community College All swimmers trying out for the team must register for the tryout. There is no cost associated with the registration. The purpose for the registration is to gather some information about the swimmer(s) and to enable us to prepare an organized and structured tryout. Tryout Instructions 1. Read about the structure of our team at hcyswim.com under the About HCY tab. 2. Understand the groups within the team by reading under the Practice Groups tab. 3. Fill out Tryout Registration From (last page of this document) 4. Turn in Tryout Registration Form at the front desk of the YMCA 5. Show up at tryouts What does your swimmer need for tryout? Each swimmer trying out should bring: Goggles Swim Suit (a racing or practice suit: no shorts) Towel Swim Cap (a racing or practice cap: no shower caps) What will be required of your swimmer at tryouts? Swimmers will be timed in a race format in the following events: 8&U: Will be observed no racing 9&Over: 50 BK, 50 FR, 50 BR, and 50 FLY ***Swimmers may choose not to race a stroke if they are not comfortable.\ On what basis will we be selecting swimmers for the team? HCY has limited openings. In groups for which we have more swimmers trying out than spots available, we will er spots to the swimmers who have the best combination of stroke develoent and racing ability.

2 Minimum Requirements for Readiness 8&U Group: Swimmers MUST be able to complete 1 lap of both Freestyle and Backstroke without assistance White Group: Swimmers MUST be able to complete 2 laps of both Freestyle and Backstroke without assistance Blue Group: Swimmers MUST be able to complete 2 laps of all 4 strokes Junior Group: Swimmers MUST be able to complete 4 laps of at least 3 strokes (Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke, or Freestyle) Senior Group: Swimmers must be proficient in all 4 strokes. Entry is based on ability to meet group requirements and coach discretion

3 Hunterdon County YMCA Membership Options To be a member of our swim team, National YMCA rules dictate that all participants must be Full members of the YMCA. For swimmers up through age 11, they will need to be Family Full members of the YMCA. Families can choose to either pay for a year in full or do a bank/credit draft. With a draft membership, the first month is paid when joining and succeeding months are automatically drafted from a credit card or checking account. For swimmers ages 12 and older there is the option of a Teen membership or a Family membership. There is a special option for 7th graders the YMCA Strong Kids membership which is ered free of charge to all 7th graders in the county as a way to encourage youth to build health habits. Strong Kids memberships run from September 1 of the seventh grade year through August 31. As such, all locations, meets, and dates are subject to change. Members of the HCY Long Course Team will prioritize Long Course Meets over summer league meets. In cases where there is a conflict, they will attend the Long Course Meet. All HCY Swimmers who wish to compete in LC must be USA Swimming Members

5 Why does HCY have two schedules? HCY has two teams over the summer: a summer-league team that competes in the Penn Jersey Swim League (PJSL), and a Long Course Competition team. Long Course competition experience is the most valuable experience a swimmer can have. For a great read on the significance of early Long Course racing experience, follow the link: In an attempt to strengthen swimming on our team and throughout Hunterdon County, we are emphasizing and encouraging swimmers to gain Long Course experience early in their swimming careers. However, the demands of training and racing in a Long Course pool are greater than in short-course. Not all swimmers will be ready for Long Course. Swimmers on our Long Course team can compete on a summer-league team and our Long Course team provided that they prioritize the Long Course events and training over the summer-league meets and demands. HCY swimmers who are not ready for Long Course still have a competition season through the PJSL. These swimmers will only compete in the PJSL schedule where they will have a more appropriate level of competition and training demands.
