4 Introduction The 2015 U.S. Commercial Swimming Pool Market is a summary and analysis of the industry at the close of 2015, and is Pkdata s seventh review of the commercial pool segment since We have followed this segment from the post 9/11 downturn at the start of the new millennium through the housing bubble that saw a rapid increase in commercial pool construction, which was then blunted by a deep economic recession and still has not recovered to rates even close to figures from the beginning of this decade. In this report, we present the current state of the commercial pool construction market which saw a very slight uptick from 2014 sales but still lags considerably from previous sales levels. Pkdata defines a commercial pool as public (available to all) or semi-public (available only to members/guests). Lodging entities, water parks, recreation departments, health clubs, medical facilities, multi-family housing, and subdivisions account for the majority of commercial installations. For classification purposes, Pkdata has defined the following types of pools based on their size: Small Pools that are 50,000 gallons or less Medium Pools between 50,001 and 150,000 gallons Large 150,001 gallons to 500,000 gallons Super Greater than 500,000 gallons Throughout the report, we will also make reference to Certified Pool Operators (CPOs), persons responsible for pool maintenance and sanitization. CPOs have completed approved courses and received certification from the National Swimming Pool Foundation to manage and/or operate a public swimming pool. 1 Every state has requirements regarding public pools and their upkeep. Associations, state health departments, and some builders offer classes and programs for pool operators. The industry continues to develop multiple resources to train commercial operators, particularly on safety issues. CPOs must remain informed about the industry and its products as well as stay abreast of all state and local regulations regarding public pools. 1 We acknowledge that there are competitive certifications offered by other organizations like the National Recreation and Parks Departments (an Aquatics Facility Operator certification). Ultimately, all of these certifications train individuals on maintaining public pools. However, because most state health organizations write their requirements using the term CPO, Pkdata does the same. Readers should keep in mind that, where mentioned, any commercial operator certification is applicable. 4 p a g e YE 2015 U.S. Commercial Swimming Pool Report 2016, P.K. Data, Inc.
