4 REPORT CARDS AND PARENTS DAYS CONTINUOUS YMCA SWIM LESSONS SWIM LESSONS View your child s swim progress report online at: bit.ly/ynaswimreports NM (Non-Members/Public): One per session As a parent, we know how important it is to keep up to date with your child s progress. Report Cards are now available online at: bit.ly/ynaswimreports Enter your child s membership card number to retrieve your child s report card. Report Cards will be updated upon request or at the end of the season which falls in April, August, and December. Parents Days are every 6 to 8 weeks; you will have the opportunity to meet your child s instructor in the last 10 minutes of their weekly lesson. This is a great opportunity to see how your child is progressing. Your child s swim instructor may change at the beginning of January, May, and September. This is a good time to meet the new instructor that your child will have in the new season. Welcoming your child into our swimming lessons and placing them into the appropriate class is our first priority. New participants and those changing times will start in the Continuous Swim Program only on select week(s) each month. On your child s first day, they will complete an assessment to determine the class that is most appropriate for their comfort level and swimming ability. Intake and class changes are only done on select weeks to minimize the disruption on those currently in lessons and to ensure a productive and seamless transition into the program for all swimmers! CONTINUOUS SWIM PROGRAM At the YMCA, we know that it takes more than six-to-eight weeks to develop effective lifelong swimming and water-safety skills. That s why we re thrilled to offer the YMCA Canada Continuous Swim Lesson model, unique to the YMCA. Members sign up for a convenient time slot that continues throughout the year. If you have a family with several children, they can all participate at the same time, giving you the freedom to schedule other activities throughout the day. We are committed to offering swim lessons that will help participants to Make Friends, Build Skills, and be Water Safe: For Life. Make Friends: we promote relationship building between Instructors, Swimmers, and Families. Build Skills: while we still identify core swimming skills within levels such as Bobbers, Otter, Star 1 4 etc., we now organize them by grouping: Lil Dippers, Learn to Swim, Star, and Star Leadership. Swimmers will work on several levels at the same time within their grouping. Water Safe: learning water safety is part of being fun, prepared, and safe around all bodies of water. For Life: swimmers will progress at their own pace without the pressure of completing levels within the typical lesson structure and time frame. Swimming is a life skill. You will be removed from Continuous Swim Lessons if you do not meet our absence policy, put your membership on hold, cancel, or your membership expires (and is lapsed). ADULT, PARENTED, AND TEEN CLASSES For added convenience and flexibility, Adult, Parented Lil Dippers, and Teen lessons are now drop-in and no longer require registration! Please see your facility schedule for days and times. NEW! We re Going Green! NEW! Swim Absences We are now using s, Robo-calls, and our website to keep our members more informed about program changes and updates. Please update your contact information at Membership Services today. Calling in for absences is no longer necessary. You will only be removed from Continuous Swim Lessons if you miss four (4) classes in a row, put your membership on hold, cancel, or if your membership expires (and is lapsed). 6

Available 15 minutes prior to start of class at Member Services Desk. At a Glance: Make Friends: meet other parents interested in teaching their child the basics of learning to swim through games and songs. Build Skills: some of the skills you will learn include learning how to hold and assist your child, entering and exiting the water safely, splashing and kicking, getting face wet, blowing bubbles and bobbing, assisted front and back floats, and towing. Water Safe: introduction to water and watersafety awareness for the pool and at home. For Life: parents and children begin to build water-safety knowledge and beginner swimming skills. Lil Dippers (3 5yrs) Continuous Swim Lessons (30 min) At a Glance: Make Friends: make new friends through learning with games and songs. Build Skills: blow bubbles, submersion, kicking, front & back glides, deep water skills, surface support, and diving. Water Safe: identify water hazards, how and when to wear a personal flotation device, accessing EMS, boating safety, ice safety. For Life: learn swimming skills that can be used to build swimming strokes and water-safety awareness. Learn To Swim (6 12yrs) Continuous Swim Lessons (30 min) At a Glance: Make Friends: make new friends through learning with activities and games. May work in partners or groups. Build Skills: swimmers will improve their body awareness and motor skills as they submerge, kick, roll, and jump in the water. They will be competent swimmers on their front and back when they complete Learn to Swim. Water Safe: identify water hazards, using a personal flotation device, how to call for EMS, boating safety, ice safety. For Life: learn swimming skills that can be used to build swimming strokes and water-safety awareness. Star Program (6 12yrs) Continuous Swim Lessons (30 min) At a Glance: Make Friends: make new friends while learning with activities and work in partners or groups. Build Skills: swimmers will learn elementary backstroke, breaststroke, side stroke, eggbeater and increase their swimming distance to 350m by the end of the Star Program. Optional items give your child opportunities to explore competitive swimming, synchronized swimming, water polo, and aquafit. Water Safe: learn self-rescue skills, how to call for EMS, boating safety, ice safety, and how to use reaching and throwing devices. For Life: learn advanced swimming strokes and new water sports. 7

Star Leadership (6 12yrs) Continuous Swim Lessons (60 min) At a Glance: Make Friends: make new friends, learn lifesaving skills, share knowledge with new swimmers while working in partners and groups. Build Skills: your competent and confident swimmer will build on their strong aquatic skills to improve their physical fitness, while building on advanced and competitive swimming skills. This grouping has a component of learning how to teach others. Water Safe: learn basic first aid skills to safely help others who are in trouble in the water. For Life: learn competitive swimming strokes and turns, synchronized swimming, water polo, aquafit, lifesaving skills, and teach others. Adult (16+yrs) Drop-In (60 min) Tag required. Available 15 minutes prior to start of class at Member Services Desk. At a Glance: Make Friends: make new friends, build confidence, and learn swimming strokes. Build Skills: adults will progress at their own pace by setting their own goals. Everything from basic water skills to swimming strokes used to increase endurance, fitness, and speed can be accomplished in this class. Water Safe: learn seasonal water safety related to water activities on lakes, rivers, and ponds. For Life: learn about water safety, water sports, improve strokes, and continue physical fitness. 14 AQUATICS CERTIFICATION COURSES Please see Aquatics Department for course dates and times. Bronze Medallion The Bronze Medallion course teaches an understanding of the lifesaving principles embodied in the four components of water rescue education: judgment, knowledge, skill, and fitness. Rescuers learn tows, carries, and defense-andrelease methods in preparation for challenging rescues of increased risk involving conscious and unconscious victims of various types. Lifesavers develop stroke efficiency and endurance in a timed swim. Includes CPR Level A. Prerequisites: Bronze Star or 13+yrs. Bronze Cross Bronze Cross is designed for lifesavers who want the challenge of more advanced training including an introduction to safe supervision in aquatic facilities. This course is the prerequisite for all advanced training programs including the National Lifeguard and instructor certifications. Includes CPR Level C. Prerequisites: Bronze Medallion. We also offer a combined Bronze Medallion & Bronze Cross Original training course. Those participants unable to complete Bronze Medallion will not receive the Bronze Cross award. Standard First Aid/CPR-C/AED Original Standard First Aid provides comprehensive training covering all aspects of first aid and CPR. This course is for those who want an in-depth understanding of first aid such as: medical/legal considerations, spinal injuries, heat or cold injuries, bone and joint injuries, abdominal and chest injuries, burns, and medical emergencies. Includes CPR-C and AED certification. Prerequisites: 13+yrs. National Lifeguard Course Original The NL program develops basic lifeguarding skills, principles, and the decision-making process to help lifeguards evaluate and adapt to different aquatic facilities and emergencies. It is a minimum requirement to lifeguard in Alberta. Prerequisites: Bronze Cross, 16+yrs and SFA. YMCA Swim Instructor Course Designed to certify participants to teach the YMCA Swim program. Participants will engage in group discussions, practice teaching sessions, assignments, and group work. Both classroom and pool sessions are included in the course. This 40-hour program develops candidates into competent swim instructors. Upon completion of course requirements, candidates will be certified to instruct YMCA Lil Dippers, Learn to Swim and Star Program. Candidates should be able to perform swimming strokes at the intermediate level. Candidates for this course will be asked to do some pre- and post-course work. Note: upon completion of classroom work, a hour practicum is required before candidates are evaluated for certification. During our courses practicum hours can be done on non-class days throughout the course. Prerequisites: Bronze Cross, Standard First Aid or AEC and 16+yrs. NL Course Recertification/CPR-C/AED Recertification This is a recertification course for National Lifeguard (NL-Pool), CPR-C and AED. This course may not be separated into parts. Participants must attend the entire recertification. Prerequisites: Must have previously held these awards. 14

School groups can also take advantage of our Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross,, and National Lifeguard Certification courses. For ages 13+. Package 1: $7 $13/child * We have school packages available for Elementary, Jr. High, and High School groups. Depending on your activity we can accommodate anywhere from six to two hundred participants at one time. Prices are based on group size and activity.
