The championships marked the final competition of their collegiate careers. At the Pac-10 Championships at Long Beach, Calif., Nicole Chinn had two top-24 finishes for Washington State. The Seattle native swam a season best time of in the preliminaries of the 100 backstroke to earn a spot in the bonus consolation final where she finished 22nd with a time of Chinn grabbed a 22nd place finish in the 100 butterfly with another season best time of Chinn also swam lifetime best times in the 50 freestyle and 50 backstroke. Chinn was also a key member of four WSU relay teams, the 200 medley relay, the 400 medley relay, the 200 freestyle relay, and the 400 freestyle relay. Her lifetime best came leading off the 200 medley relay (26.28). She swam her previous best in the lead leg of the school record holding 200 medley relay her sophomore During the third and final day of competition, Sasha Taylor, a senior from Smiths Falls, Ontario, clocked a season best with a 2:04.53 in the preliminaries of the 200 backstroke. She swam a 2:04.94 in the final to earn a 15th place finish. Taylor also swam season best times at the Pac-10 Championships in the 200 and 500 freestyles. Along with individual events, Taylor played a role in the 800 freestyle relay. Morgan Hills, Calif., native, Theresa Dunn scored two lifetime bests and one season best at the Pac -10 Championships. Dunn swam a in the 50 fly and in the 100 butterfly to grab lifetime bests. In the 100 back she swam a season best time. McCLEAVE BREAKS RECORD Freshman Erin McCleave set a WSU record in the 200 freestyle (1:49.41) during the lead leg of the 800 freestyle relay at the Pac -10 Championships. The Cougars placed sixth in the event, their highest finish of the meet. The Rutherglen, Australia native was also an important contributor in the 400 medley relay, the 200 freestyle relay, and 400 freestyle relay teams at the Pac -10 Championships. She finished the season with the team s top times in the 50, 100, 200, and 500 freestyles. On the season she had six top two finishes in the 200 free, three in the 100 free, four in the 50 free, and three first place finishes in the 500 freestyle. McCleave holds places on the Cougars alltime top 10 list in the 50, 100, 200, and 500 freestyles. 1

She finished first in the 100 breaststroke five times this season, finishing second in her other three races. She finished first in the 200 breaststroke five times, and was runner-up three times. Povilonyte is number three on the Cougars all-time top 10 list in the 100 and 200 breaststrokes. She also served a key role on the 200 and 400 medley relay teams at the Pac-10 Championships. Fellow freshman Lindsay Backhouse contributed to the team at Pac-10 championships as well. Backhouse finished 20th in the 200 yard backstroke. She also finished 24th in the 100 backstroke. In her efforts at the Pac-10, Backhouse earned two spots on the Cougars alltime top 10 list, in the 100 butterfly and 200 backstroke. Five freshman made it on the Cougars all-time top 10 list this season, occupying 10 spots. Aside from Backhouse, McCleave, and Povilonyte, Kayli Changstrom and Katie Van Horne grabbed top-10 positions. PAC-10 IN THE NATION Seven of the nine Pac-10 women s swim teams finished in the top-20 at the 2004 NCAA Championships. Arizona had the highest finish for the conference, coming in third. It was followed by Stanford (fifth), California (sixth), UCLA (seventh), USC (ninth), Arizona State (14th), and Oregon State (20th). Two other WSU opponents this season finished in the top-30 at the championships. Arkansas came in 27th, and Pacific finished 29th. Behind the big names and high ranked Pac-10 swim teams are equally dominant individual swimmers. Seven Pac-10 swimmers finished in the top-10 individual scorers. USC s Kaitlin Sandeno came in first, followed by California s Natalie Coughlin in second. Emily Mason, Whitney Myers, and Jessica Hayes finished in fifth, sixth, and eighth, respectively for Arizona. Stanford s Tara Kirk came in tied for 10th, along with two other swimmers, including Arizona State s Agnes Kovacs. Kirk received the swimmer of the meet honors at the NCAA Championships. The Stanford swimmer had two first place finishes, breaking records along the way. In the 100 breaststroke, Kirk set a world, American, and NCAA record. In the 200 breaststroke, she set a NCAA and American record, breaking Amanda Beard s record from Coughlin broke meet records in the 100 butterfly and backstroke. USC s Sandeno and Kalyn Keller set NCAA records, Sandeno in the 400 and 200 individual medleys, and Keller s in the 1500 freestyle. Mason set a NCAA record in the 400 freestyle. 3 COUGARS RANK FOURTH ACADMEICALLY The Washington State University women s swim team ranked fourth in the nation academically for the fall 2003 term according to the College Swim Coaches Association of America (CSCAA). The Cougars continued in their tradition of academic prowess with a team semester grade-point average of 3.489, placing them No. 1 in the Pacific-10 Conference for the seventh consecutive year. The team s national ranking of fourth also makes Washington State one of four Pac-10 teams ranked in the top-50 nationally. NINE COUGARS GARNER PAC-10 ACADEMIC HONORS Seniors Theresa Dunn and Sasha Taylor, and sophomore Andrea Lubeck earned Pacific -10 Conference First Team All-Academic honors. WSU matched Stanford and USC with most first team honorees. Dunn carried a 3.80 grade-point average and is pursuing a major in business administration and finance. This is the third straight year Dunn as been named to the Pac-10 first team. Taylor complied a GPA of 3.71 while majoring in biology education. Lubeck maintained a 3.97 GPA and has not declared her major. Junior co-captain Lisa Irwin garnered all-academic second team honors for the second consecutive Sophomore Karen Eldred also grabbed second team honors. Other Cougar honorees included senior Nicole Chinn (Seattle), junior Sheena Mills (Calgary, Alberta), and sophomores Jane Copland (Wellington, New Zealand) and Lesley Ouellette (Ukiah, Calif.) who each earned honorable mention. To be eligible for the Pac-10 All-Academic team athletes must have a class standing of sophomore or older, have a minimum 3.0 overall GPA and be either a starter or significant substitute. ATHLETES IN WSU RECORD BOOKS This season s Cougar swimmers currently hold 28 positions on WSU s all-time top-10 lists for individual events, including one school record: Erin McCleave-200 freestyle (1:49.41). Berish attends Chamblee High School in Atlanta, Ga. She received team MVP honors as a freshman and sophomore. As a junior, Berish placed in the top-10 at State in the 50 freestyle. She was also a member of the fifth place finishing 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams. The Bulldogs finished ninth at State that year. Berish is currently a captain for the swim Berish also competes for the Dynamo Swim Club, under coaches Ed Spencer and Jim Rumbaugh. She was a junior national qualifier in the 100 free. Mooney swam two years at Pullman High School where she reached the State finals in the 100 butterfly and backstroke both years. As a sophomore, she was named the MVP for the Greyhounds. Mooney currently swims for Palouse Area Swimming, where she has been a junior national qualifier, sectional qualifier, and age group regional champion in the 100 backstroke. Van Zanten attends Orting High School, and competes for King Aquatic Club where she swims under coach Sean Hutchison. She is a four time U.S. Open Qualifier, and seven time Junior National Qualifier. As a member of the 400 medley, Van Zanten finished eight at the Senior Nationals. Wood swam one year at Redmond High School in Redmond, Ore., before moving to Bend, Ore., where she competes for Summit High School. As a sophomore at RHS, Wood placed in the top 10 at State. Her junior year, Wood placed fourth in the 200 individual medley and third in the 100 freestyle. Outside of school, Wood competes for the Bend Swim Club. In , she attended the Oregon All-Stars in Las Vegas. In her spare time, Wood volunteers at the Pacific Crest Triathlon and The High Desert Swim Camp. 4
