Lab Safety MRS. WEBSTER

Essential Question What is the importance of Lab Safety?

Objectives Locate and use Lab safety equipment Know the basic rules of lab safety in the classroom/lab Identify lab symbols

Lab Safety Science activities are potentially hazardous. Equipment must be handled properly or can be dangerous. No science student will be allowed to participate in science activities until the safety contract has been signed by both the student and a parent or guardian.

Safety Rules

General Guidelines Conduct yourself in a responsible manner at all times. Follow all directions carefully. If you do not understand, please ask the teacher. Do not touch any materials unless instructed to do so. No food or drink are allowed in the lab. Keep aisles clear by pushing all chairs in and placing personal materials under the lab bench.

General Guidelines Keep hands away from your face when working in the lab. Wash your hands after you are done working in the lab. Keep the lab area clean. Do not have clutter on the lab bench and thoroughly clean up any spills. When finished, clean thoroughly and return all materials to their proper locations. Wipe down the lab bench with a Clorox wipe. When using electrical equipment, plug and unplug the device with care.

Clothing Goggles will be worn when chemicals, heat or glassware are being used. Closed-toed shoes should be worn when in the lab. No baggy clothing or dangling jewelry should be worn in the lab. Long hair should be tied back. Lab aprons and gloves should be worn when necessary.

Handling Chemicals Do not touch, taste, or smell any chemical. Check any labels on chemicals before using. Never remove chemicals from the laboratory. Use care when transporting chemicals across the lab. Dispose of chemicals in the proper receptacle. Do not pour chemicals own the drain unless instructed to do so. Do not mix any chemicals unless instructed to do so. Do not return unused chemicals to their original containers.

Handling Glassware Examine glassware before use. Never use broken, chipped or cracked glassware. If glassware breaks, call the teacher to clean it up. Never pick up broken glass with bare hands. Place all glassware in the middle of the table; do not place glassware on the edge.

In Case of Emergency Report any accidents or injuries to the teacher immediately. Know the location of the chemical shower, eyewash, fire extinguisher, and spill containment. In case of building evacuation or lockdown during a laboratory activity, follow all directions from the teacher.

Other Rules Never leave a lit Bunsen Burner or hot plate unattended. When performing dissections, always cut away from your body. When dealing with live organisms, treat all organisms humanely.

Animal Safety Rule Handle all animals with care and respect 1. Open animal cages only with permission 2. Never handle any animals when the teacher is out of the room. 3. Do not take animals out of the science room. 4. Do not tease or handle animals roughly. 5. Keep animal away from students faces. 6. Wear gloves when handling animals. 7. Report any animal bite or scratch to the teacher immediately.

You, the student - Agree to follow the rules to ensure not only your own safety but also the safety of others in the science classroom or laboratory. You agree to follow the general rules of appropriate behavior for a classroom at all times to avoid accidents and to provide a safe learning environment for everyone. You understand that if you do not follow all the rules and safety precautions, you will not be allowed to participate in science activities.

Lab Safety Contract Take home and have a parent sign this. This needs to be returned Septermber 8 th. Without this you will not be able to do any labs until this is returned.

Safety Lab Test Tuesday September 12 th During class and you have to have a 85% pass rate to participate in labs. If you do not pass, you will have a chance to retake on Friday 9/15.
