1 Mid-America Council First Annual 2015 FIRST AID MEET Saturday March 14, 2015 PARTICIPATION INFORMATION PACKET Sponsored by Trailblazer Venturing Crew 409
2 TRAILBLAZER FIRST AID MEET Date : Saturday, March 14, 2015 Time : Location: Cost: Check in -- 7:00 am to 7:45 am Meet will be from 8:00 until 3:00 pm Iowa National Guard Armory 2415 E. Kanesville Blvd. Council Bluffs, IA $5.00 per registered person (this includes both youth and adult. Patch is included). Lunch: Registration: Patrols: Judging: Salem United Methodist Church will have lunch available for purchase for $5.00 payable at the door. Forms may be turned in at the January, February, and March Roundtables or filled out on the online registration. Patrols should be formed from regular existing patrols as much as possible. Each patrol should be composed of a minimum of 5 members. The judging for scenarios will be the based upon the material located in the First Aid Merit Badge pamphlet, Search and Rescue Merit Badge Pamphlet, and Boy Scout Handbook, 2013 printing edition. Equipment: Awards: Each patrol should provide all equipment needed to demonstrate proficiency in the first aid situations presented. Each patrol should have a first aid kit. Each patrol should also have a backpack with a SMALL SLEEPING BAG and ROPE for overnight scenarios. Contents should include at least the items listed in the First Aid pamphlet. See the competition rules for additional information. FIRST AID KITS MUST BE THE SIZE AN INDIVIDUAL WOULD TAKE ON A HIKE OR CYCLING TRIP. KITS WILL BE CHECKED. DO NOT OVERLOAD THEM WITH MATERIALS YOU NORMALLY WOULDN'T CARRY!!!! A Traveling trophy will be awarded for First Place, Second, and Third Place winners will also receive trophies. 4 TRAILBLAZER DISTRICT FIRST AID MEET Competition Rules i. The Troop Leader is to check in with their registration between 7:00 and 7:45 AM with a complete list of patrols so they may receive starting station assignments and final instructions. ii. The Patrol Leader is to be in charge of his patrol at all times. The Patrol Leader or his designee, will act as the official spokesperson for the patrol during all first aid problems. iii. All patrol members are expected to stay with their patrol for the duration of the competition. This includes breaking for lunch. All participants are expected to wear the Class A Uniform. iv. Victims are not allowed to advise or assist a patrol. Victims are encouraged to cooperate with the patrol and not resist treatment. v. The patrol is expected to perform as much of the first aid care as possible. Splinting, dressing and bandaging wounds, moving & positioning the patient, examining injuries and similar care are expected to be performed. NO CREDIT will be given for just telling the judge what you would do, even if the information is correct (unless specifically instructed at the time as per the following) The following are the only instances where credit will be earned for telling the judge what would done: i. Calling for help ii. Sending Scouts for help iii. Using water or any liquids iv. Making the victim vomit v. Removing any clothing (Other than shoes, hats, gloves, or rolling up shirt sleeves or pant legs) vi. DO NOT actually breathe into a victim's mouth if required to do rescue breathing, or perform external chest compressions for CPR. Proper positioning of the patient and corrects techniques should be demonstrated. vii. Abdominal thrusts or back blows, if required, are to be simulated and done gently. viii. For some problems, the exact nature of the injury may not be apparent at first.however, enough information will be provided to begin treatment. Judges may provide additional information on the nature of the injury and patient condition as you're providing care. ix. Patrols may be in the problem in some cases. In others, they will need to observe and examine the victim to determine the treatment needed. The Patrol Leader may ask questions to the judge. Each patrol must complete the scenario within a specified period. Approx. 30 mins per station. x. Patrols will be judged on their skills in solving the problem. Care must be given in the correct order as outlined in the First Aid Merit Badge pamphlet and proper care administered within the specified time. Patrols must participate in all problems. xi. The evaluation by the judges and points awarded will be final. xii. First aid supplies must be provided by each patrol participating. The sharing of equipment and supplies will not be allowed. First aid supplies only those listed below as published in the personal first aid kit for the First Aid Merit Badge. 6-Adhesive bandages, 2- Sterile gauze pads, 3-by-3 inch, 1 small roll Adhesive tape, Moleskin, 3-by-6 inch, 1 small bar of soap, 1 small tube of antiseptic, 1 pair of scissors, 1 pair latex gloves, 1 Mouth barrier device, 1 pair of goggles or other safety glasses, pencil and paper. ALL PATROLS SHOULD HAVE ROPE AND A SMALL SLEEPING BAG WITH THEM.
