2 The Aquatic Center will open on Memorial Day, May 29, 2017 from 1-5pm with regular schedule hours starting Tuesday May 30 continuing on throughout the season (with exception of holidays). The last day of the Aquatic Center season will be the week of August 19 with the exact date to be announced, depending on staffing. The City reserves the right to close features as needed due to staffing, low attendance and inclement weather. Children 8 and under must be accompanied by a caregiver who is at least 14 years of age. The caregiver must be within arm s reach of the child/children. A mark on the hand will be used to signify eligible riders for all slides, requiring that the rider be 48 inches tall. Anyone riding these slides must have a mark of the day on their hand or they will be sent to be measured and get one. Deep water tests will be administered before swimmers age 12 and under can use the deep end features, including both diving boards and the drop slide. A wrist band will be given to show the swimmer has passed the test. No floatation devices of any kind can be used during this test or in the deep end. 2

Shallow Play Areas Shallow play areas exist in both the main pool and adjoined to the river for non-swimmers to enjoy. This area will not have a size or age limit as long as they are being used properly. Anyone abusing the areas as family-friendly areas will be asked to leave. General Aquatic Center Rules Anyone who is not potty trained is required to wear swim diapers. All patrons should use diaper changing tables in changing room. Diaper changing on the pool deck is not allowed. Inflatable toys are not allowed. No personal rafts, inner tubes, baby boats, etc.. All swim aides must be made to be worn on the body. Remember, that only a Coast Guard approved lifejacket provides lifesaving results. Swim aides will not be allowed to be used off the diving boards or slides. Food and drink are not allowed to be brought into the facility. Concession food must be consumed in the eating area. All chairs must be placed outside the white lined areas. Lifeguards need access to the sides of the pool. All basketballs must remain in the area of the hoop. No running. No pushing. No glass containers. No diving except where designated. No horseplay. Smoking is not allowed anywhere in the facility or on City grounds. 5

6 Aquatic Center General Slide Rules Follow all slide rules as posted. No one shorter than 48 inches tall is allowed to ride either set of slides or the drop slide. Lifejackets are not allowed to be worn on the tube, body and drop slides, per manufacturer rule Metal grommets on swim suits are not allowed on main pool slides. Patrons enjoying slides must have a mark of the day. They are available without cost by the admission booth, provided all requirements are met. Adventure River Rules Adventure River Rules No one shorter than 48 tall can use the tube slides Parents are recommended to try the river prior to taking small children on the ride. It will be a wet ride with plenty of action. Non-swimmers should wear a life jacket. The City reserves the right to ask anyone to leave the area if they are abusing the tubes or the facility. Falling out of a tube on purpose will not be tolerated. Riders must remain in tubes for the entire ride. Keep hands off the tops of walls. Patrons may not pull themselves around the river with their hands. Sit back, relax and enjoy the ride. Do not exit the river using the steps in the slide plunge pool. Exit after the bridge. Only clear tubes will be allowed on the slides. Tubes are provided for free on a first come, first served basis. Everyone s Use on River and Slides A Person must be at least 48 tall to ride the tube slides or the river by themselves. However, a patron under 48 tall can ride the river if accompanied by someone who is at least 14 years old, in your choice of tube. Patrons may not save tubes. Tubes must be returned to the tube storage when not in use. The City has the right to limit the number of tubes or amount of time on the river or tube slides at any one time. All riders must sit in the opening of the tube or on the solid bottom of the tube. Lap sitting is not allowed. Maximum number of riders on a double tube is two. Maximum number of riders on a single tube is one. All single tubes are for one rider ONLY! Double tubes must have two riders. Small children in tubes can be walked by a caregiver at least 14 years in age. Use for One Small Child and One Adult on river Use for two small children on river Use for one small child on river 6

7 How to choose the Correct of Swimming Lessons First Children enrolling in Pre-School lesson must be ages 3-6. Younger children not ready for lesson may be interested in our Aqua tots swim class. Ages 7 and older need to register for the classes. Second Review the skills listed for each class. The skills needed in order to pass the class. Can your child complete all the skills listed? YES = advance to the next level NO = enroll in that class. Group Lessons All lessons will be held at the Indoor Pool. Weekday classes will run Monday through Thursday for two weeks. Aqua Tots will only have one session. For more information please contact the Pella Aquatic Center at Helpful Hints Beginner classes fill quickly, it is recommended to sign up on registration day Arrive early so class may begin on time Swimmers will often need to repeat the level before progression. If classes are full place your swimmer on the waitlist. If a spot or class opens those on the waitlist will be called in order of waitlist placement. 7

Lesson Refund Policy Make-up classes will not be given unless a class cannot be held at its regular time and a make-up is approved by the Aquatic Manager. Refunds will not be given for classes or passes. Credit may be given for medical reasons, but the Aquatic Manager must be notified before the third lesson in order to receive credit. After the third lesson, credit will not be given. If a child is voluntarily removed from lessons for any other reason, a credit will not be given. Any instance of a patron who cannot attend classes because of the CDC recommendation concerning diarrhea should be brought to the attention of the Aquatic Manager. 8

9 Aqua-Tots The Aqua-tots class is designed to familiarize 6 months to 36 months in water with help from a parent or guardian. The sessions are not intended to teach how to swim, but rather to get the child acquainted with the water. Tadpoles (Age 3-6) The skills taught in Tadpoles consist of: jumping into deep water, head first entry, bobbing with the head submerged, rotary breathing, front and back glide, front and back crawl, and breast stroke. Child must be certified in Guppies II to register. 1 (Age 7 & Up) The skills taught in I consist of: exiting the water safely, submerging entire head, bobbing, front and back float, front and back crawl. Each child must be at least 7 years old before the first class in order to register. Guppies I (Age 3-6) The skills taught in Guppies I consist of: exiting the water safely, submerging the face, blowing bubbles, picking up a submerged object, maintain a front float position, swim on front and back. Each child must be at least 3 years old before the first class to register. Moonfish (Age 3-6) The skills taught in Moonfish consist of: diving, swimming underwater, treading water, front and back crawl, breaststroke, butterfly kick with body motion, sidestroke, and rotary breathing, Child must be certified in Tadpoles to register. 2 (Age 7 & Up) The skills taught in II consist of: front and back float, front and back glide, change direction while swimming, front and back crawl, and elementary back stroke. Child must be certified in 1 to register. Guppies II (Age 3-6) The skills taught in Guppies II consist of: exiting the water from the side, submerging entire head, blowing bubbles, picking up a submerged object, front and back float, back glide, front and back crawl. Child must be certified in Guppies I to register. Starfish (Age 3-6) The skills taught in Starfish consist of: diving, swimming underwater, treading water, front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, butterfly, sidestroke, and rotary breathing, Child must be certified in Moonfish to register. 3 (Age 7 & Up) The skills taught in III consist of: jumping into deep water, head first entry, submerge and retrieve an object, rotary breathing, front and back glide, tread water, front and back crawl. Child must be certified in 2 to register. 4 (Age 7 & Up) The skills taught in IV consist of: diving, surface diving, treading water, front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, butterfly kick with body motion, sidestroke, and rotary breathing, Child must be certified in 3 to register. 5 (Age 7 & Up) The skills taught in V consist of: diving, surface diving, swimming underwater, treading water, front and back crawl, breaststroke, butterfly, sidestroke, and rotary breathing, Child must be certified in 4 to register. 6 (Age 7 & Up) The skills taught in VI consist of: refinement of the stokes so participants swim them with ease, efficient, power, and smoothness over greater distances. Child must be certified in 5 to register. 9

11 Water Aerobics Class Description: This shallow water workout includes calisthenics style movements with variations of upper and lower body resistive moves. You will march, jog, kick, jacks and jump through the water to create resistance to improve cardiovascular fitness, muscular endurance and flexibility. As the participant, you determine your own intensity by deciding how hard to manipulate the water. (45 minutes) Participants: Appropriate for individuals who have moderate to good fitness levels, individuals with controlled medical conditions who can manage some impact, individuals who enjoy intense use of all muscle groups, athletes and swimmers looking for an aqua alternative. Resident w/ Pass $24 Resident w/o Pass $44 Non-Resident w/ Pass Non-Resident w/o Pass $30 $54 Drop In $8 Senior Aerobics Class Description: This recreational program includes exercises to improve the participant's overall function and performance of daily task, mobility, independence, flexibility, balance and coordination.(40 minutes) Participants: Appropriate for individuals with arthritis (moderate to severe joint involvement) and other related diseases as well as sedentary adults who are generally de-conditioned and cannot endure sustained activity. Registration: There is no registration needed. Class is held Monday Through Friday From 7:30am 8:15am beginning May 30. Fees for residents is $2.50 and Non- Resident $3.00. Free to Members. There will be one class offered this summer Monday - Friday. 11

12 AquaFit is an easy way to have a high intensity workout that is easy on the joints. This class will be held in the deep end from 12:00 to 12:45 PM on Tuesday and Thursday. One session includes 8 classes. Sign up for the whole session or pay $8 each time you come. Drop ins are only accepted if there if enough registered for the class and if space is available. 13 RENTALS The facility may be rented in part or in whole for private use. Anyone wishing to rent the facility should make arrangements with the Aquatic Manager at least two weeks in advance. If you d like to inquire about group rates during public swim hours please contact the Aquatic Manager at If the weather or temperature does not cooperate, rentals may be rescheduled if dates are available. All rentals will be sent a rental contract and are expected to be pre-paid unless arrangements have been made with the Aquatic Manager. No refunds will be allowed if the Aquatic Manager is not notified three days in advance of a cancellation. 14 Swim Team Must be at least 5 years old and able to swim the length of the pool, using crawl or freestyle. Anyone 9 and older must be able to swim two lengths of the pool using crawl or freestyle. Tryouts will be held on May 9, from 5:00-5:45 pm and May 11 from 5:00-5:45 pm. Tryouts will last about 15 minutes, so you can come anytime during the session. Tryouts are for new swimmers that are not sure about swim team. All swimmers must be registered for swim team by May 20. A LATE FEE OF $25 WILL BE CHARGED AFTER THE DEADLINE. No refund will be given if the swimmer decides not to continue with Swim Team after the registration date. Practices start May 30-.Practices are available Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday 10 & Under 8:15 9:00AM (Indoor) 11 & Up : 9:00 10:00 AM (outdoor) Meets are on Tuesday evenings. Every swimmer must have a pass to the pool. Cost is Residents-$26.00, Non-Residents $ A LATE FEE OF $25 WILL BE CHARGED AFTER THE DEADLINE. Be sure to bring your dogs favorite ball or toy. Dogs will follow their owners and the Pella Aquatic Center s rules. Any dogs with aggressive behavior should not attend the Doggie Dip Day. All dogs must be on a leash when not in the water. Owners must be with their dogs at all times. Open swimming will not be allowed. One owner per dog is allowed to enter the water. August 23, 2017 at the Pella Aquatic Center from 5:00-7:00 pm. The fee will be $5.00 per dog. 14

15 Aquatic Center - Help Wanted! Jeff Ellis Swimming Instructor: Have a passion for swimming? Want to help others learn? Then becoming a swim instructor is for you! The City of Pella is certified with Jeff Ellis and Associates swimming program. To become a swim instructor you are required to take the Ellis and Associates Swim Instructor course. This course is a 3 day class where you will learn how to teach the different strokes, diving, and games to play with your students. Participants must be 15 years old and be able to swim at the skill level they wish to teach. Swimming lessons are taught year round. Being a lifeguard may be the perfect job for you this summer. The City of Pella is in need of more lifeguards this summer season. In order to become a lifeguard you are required to take the Ells and Associates training course. The training course is a 3 to 4 day course which includes a written test. Before taking a job at the Pella Aquatic Center lifeguard must be an Ellis and Associates licensed guard. The Pella Aquatic Center is open Memorial Day to mid August.
